UNI-T UT139C Multimeter - Unboxing, Review and Teardown

Ғылым және технология

UNI-T UT139C is a 6000 counts auto-range True-RMS multimeter which besides the usual features of measuring voltage, current, resistance, capacitance or frequency, checking diodes or continuity, can also be used for measuring duty cycle, temperature, non-contact AC voltage sensing or measuring current with an optional current clamp.

    Good review. Recently bought this multimeter. I like everything except short interruption in the beep-sound in circuit on-off mode. In my device is the same. It seems to me that this is due to the use of protective elements in the device (for example varistors), which create additional capacitance in the measurement circuit.

The board hasn't been cheaped out and the inline fuse is easily replaceable. *Update 10/2018* - The mV range has crapped out on me. • @GoranDzambazov

    @GoranDzambazov

    6 жыл бұрын

    My quick and simple answer would be to use a capacitor (~100nF) in series with the input, to avoid false duty cycle measurement readings. I made a quick test with the TTL-output of my signal generator and it appears that it is not compatible - without a capacitor in series with the input the displayed values are 0%, regardless of the actual duty cycle value.

    I used an oscilloscope to determine the source of the problem. At the input of the main chip, when the probes close, the voltage drops almost to zero (0.025V threshold on the built-in comparator). But approximately 300-400 ms at the input there is an impulse with a falling front approximately 50 ms (as after the RC circuit). The comparator reads this pulse and determines for a short time the breaking of the circuit. I removed all the capacitors from this circuit, but this pulse again occurs and the main chip itself issues it. That is, the input for a short moment becomes an output. I assume that this is a bug in the firmware of the embedded microcontroller.

    Hi, do you think the UT139C is safe enough to use for mains?

  • @GoranDzambazov

    @GoranDzambazov

    6 жыл бұрын

    I'm not sure if there is a simple answer on this question, as that highly depends on your needs and skills. If you are a professional electrician working mainly with high-energy / mains circuits you'll probably need a different multimeter dedicated and certified for that purpose. If you are a skilled electronics hobbyist who needs to work/check the mains voltages just occasionally (and you are familiar and you follow all the usual safety precautions when using multimeters for measuring in mains powered circuits), then I don't see any particular issues with this model. Still, take this as a general advice.

    Hi, I just did a quick test for sine-wave signals below 45Hz and I can say that between 10Hz and 45Hz the reading was also stable and accurate. Below 8Hz the readings started to fluctuate and were inaccurate and below 1Hz the auto-range switching got confused (it started constantly switching the ranges due to the relatively slow voltage changes on the input). To conclude, it looks like that you can also use it without problems for AC from 10Hz and above. Cheers!

    This is the only UNI-T multimeter that I have tested and I own, so I cannot give you an advice for the other UNI-T models. It's a general purpose multimeter that can be used for testing and repairs in electronics or mains powered home appliances, so if you have the knowledge and the qualifications for that, I don't have more to add than what was already shown in the video. If you would use it frequently, perhaps you can consider buying higher quality test leads. You can surely review the specs of their other models on the UNI-T web-site and possibly find a meter which is best suited for your needs.

    Thank you. There is a short demonstration of the LIGHT function on 4:47. I did not test/demonstrate the RANGE and HOLD functions because I considered that to be of less importance or trivial to be included in the video. The usage would be (as on most of the other meters): RANGE button: Press it shortly to switch to the Manual Mode and cycle through all the ranges (to select a particular range); press it longer than 2 seconds to return to the Auto-Range Mode. (This applies only to voltage, current and resistance measurement functions - The range of capacitance or frequency measurements for example cannot be manually selected); HOLD button: Press it shortly to hold the displayed value and press it again to return to the normal measurement mode.

    Goran Dzambazov Hi again. I was thinking: Can you change the range manually with the range button when min-maxing? In the video you said it's stuck at the range when starting, but does that button have any effect? Thanks.

  • @GoranDzambazov

    @GoranDzambazov

    I just made a quick test and it appears that pressing the RANGE button at any time after you have activated MAX/MIN or REL functions puts the meter back to the normal operational mode (with the AUTO-RANGE function turned off), it turns off the MAX/MIN or REL functions and it resets all the memorized MIN, MAX, MAX-MIN or REL values. So, it does not unlock the selected range by the AUTO-RANGE function in the way that I suppose you would like (to display the MAX value properly, for example).

    Hi When setting the meter on the UH and applying a high voltage 220 volt what happens and if it is damaged

    Hi, I'm not sure what exactly do you mean with UH. However, there are two fuses for protection for the current measurements: 10A fast acting fuse on the A terminal and and 0.6A fast acting fuse for the µA/mA terminal. There is also overload protection with a 600V PTC for all other measurements that use the VΩHz°C and the COM terminals.

    This is what I found in the manual under the Resistance Measurement section: "No input higher than DC 60V and AC 30 V is allowed." However, there is also this to be read: "Overload protection: 600V-PTC". I haven't tried connecting the probes on 220 V while the meter is on resistance measurement range, so I don't know if a damage would occur.

    I have those from a different multimeter set bought long time ago. But you can search online e.g. on dx.com, eBay or other stores and I'm sure you will find what you need.

    Hello. Brother, the website said that it could measure 1000 ℃. But you said it could measure only 230 ℃. I am being confused. will it measure temperature if I have high range Thermocouple?

  • @GoranDzambazov

    @GoranDzambazov

    3 жыл бұрын

    The range specified in the operating manual is from -40 to 1000°C. However, there is also a remark that the (provided) point type K thermocouple is only applicable for measurement of temperatures under 230°C. So, you need a different thermocouple for the full range.

    I don't have that model. If some of the stores sends it to me for a review, I would probably make one, although I believe that for the most part it would be a repetition of this video (both models are very similar).

    I am not sure exactly what is your comment or question. This multimeter features the usual overload protection (fuses and PTCs). You can check the manual for more details.
