It is unmatched in any Disney show At least imo

    I just want to point something out, as a kid, I never once got the idea that any of these villains were queer coded, to me that seems a bit implied. There's nothing gay about being fabulous, in fact isn't that stereotyping of LGBT and therefore offensive? I don't think they were thinking any of that, in fact Ursula's style for example, just seems very much to me and always seemed to me like just old lady with a lot of cats style, not drag queen or whatever.

  • @needsanewbrain

    @needsanewbrain

    @@otakumangastudios3617 fictional characters are not real people. if you were to assume a real person is gay because of a set of stereotypes, then yes, that wouldn't be great, but when discussing fictional characters, creators often use certain tropes as shorthand to mean certain things, and so audiences noticing those tropes isn't stereotyping on our part, it's just media analysis. and ursula in particular was explicitly based on the drag queen divine, so her more typically flamboyant traits are specifically based on those of a real gay man.

  • @otakumangastudios3617

    @@needsanewbrain I'm sorry, you seem offended by my comment? I have just watched the liberal side transform from intending to take away stereotypes, to defining themselves by mere stereotypes. I find it really sad as a liberal myself, as everyone's dividing themselves, it's not the liberalism I grew up with or remember. Yes, I know, liberalism was very imperfect in the 90s, very much so, it was flawed and so, so many ways, but I don't like the direction it's taking here either. I get what you are saying, but to me you're making the exact same argument that conservatives make when there is an explicitly sexist or misogynistic scene in a movie or TV show, they say it's just fictional, and it doesn't affect reality. Please, don't sound like those people, they don't have a valid point. About ursula, regardless of whether she's based off of that or not, which I had no idea, it seems like the whole idea is how it affects children and its viewers in general, and my first thought was just old lady who has cats and too much time on her hands kind of person About scar, he never seem to even remotely gay to me, he was just, scar. He was just a high level testosterone lion. Yes, in the wild, lions with darker hair and fur and main have higher amounts of testosterone, so that's why I labeled him that way. I'm still really confused on how these characters tie in with queer coding? Also I noticed people started saying that the joker was somehow queer-coated? I thought we shouldn't stereotype LGBT people, and the whole reason why we want representation and properly so is to end stereotypes, so you're really fighting against your own argument, and as someone who truly believes in progression of society, I think we should stop finding ways things are queer coded, and again, if you really truly want to find LGBT representation properly somewhere, please look no further than actually anime itself, I know everyone thinks it's all homophobic or whatever, I have honestly not seen anything in anime that is particularly homophobic, I don't find it homophobic if a straight character is grossed out by having relations with someone of the same gender, because to me that just seems like a natural response, and that's what I'm assuming people are accusing anime of somehow being homophobic?? I really don't know, that's my guess when I thought about it or put it into consideration. Again, I'm still really really dumbfounded how any of these Disney films represent queer people badly, they don't seem queer at all to me, I only see a character as queer if it's at all mentioned.

    @@otakumangastudios3617 "I don't find it homophobic if a straight character is grossed out by having relations with the same gender because to me it seems like a natural response" - this is... the actual problem with mainstream anime regarding to this topic. "Grossed out" shouldn't be the response, because yes, that is homophobia. Mind you, of course it is okay for a straight character to deny advances from a gay character, obviously! But it shouldn't be out of "you're gross!" unless the character in question is portrayed as an actually gross person, regardless of their sexuality. To me, a natural response would be "sorry dude, I'm not interested" or something of that nature. Just calmly stating it is enough. Hell, you can even make it awkward if you wish, but the way many anime handle it is "ugh, gross,what's wrong with you!" which I can't say is exactly ideal. Also, heavy-handedly coding the queer characters as perverts, is not great. On the other hand, there are genres with a variety of queer characters, some of which are even heartfelt and definitely more and better representation than in similar western media, but it doesn't change how the most popular mainstream anime tend to handle things.

    @eerimation I don’t think Shang was intended to be bi either, but I do think he is ultimately bi. You say he only showed romantically feelings to Mulan when she was Mulan, and only respect to her disguise, but that gives him an EXTREMELY small amount of time to develop feelings for her. After finding out she was a woman, Shang was mad at her for sneaking into the army and lying, which eats into the time he could develop attraction to her as a woman. They’re not really together again until they’re saving the emperor, which happens in the course of a single night. Then he shows explicit interest in her while being a woman. So if we go with “Shang only showed romantic interest when she was a woman”, that means he fell in love with her in like an hour? Meanwhile, if Shang was developing feelings while she was still a man, then his feelings just make more sense. Once again, I think this was mostly an accident. I don’t think the moviemakers realized that if they waited to the very end of the movie to reveal who she really was, and made most of the time Shang and her spent together bonding when she was a guy, it kind of implies that their romantic relationship was being built while Shang THOUGHT she was a guy. But that’s still ultimately what they did so 🤷🏾‍♀️.

    I know some will disagree, but since we're including Marvel I'd say Loki & Sylvie belong on this list. They may be main characters, but Loki's gender identity is only ever mentioned in what amounts to an Easter Egg that I honestly would not have noticed if the internet hadn't pointed it out. And the scene where they verbalize their bi/pansexuality doesn't actually use any identifiers in the dialogue, is never referenced again, and was clearly shot in a way that would make it easy to remove for homophobic markets.

    Also an utterly ridiculous easter egg, considering it wasnt even done properly. Assuming they made a mistake, and meant gender rather than sex, its a mistake, in a huge show, and most definitely the easter egg is purposely there, so, like, do it right. Assuming they meant sex, it still makes no sense. It would be a reference to his shapeshifting ability. But that makes no sense because his height and eye color are left stagnant. WHAT Also in general has Sylvie being the "lady loki", which couldve been really cool, like "most lokis are genderfluid, but THIS Loki isnt", but no, its not like that, and as far as I can tell, they make all Lokis except Sylvie be male, just from context clues and such. They dont reference gender fluidity, and its just such a missed opportunity for something that could've been amazing.

    I will say that one movie they did good on (hoping they don't ever make a sequel to ruin it) is Brave. It might just be that Merida is young, and so maybe she's kind of in a gray area where they could say "oh she's just not ready for a relationship yet," but from her actions in the movie, it's possible she could be considered an aro/ace character. It was also kind of cool that they focused mainly on the mother-daughter relationship, rather than her accidentally finding some romantic interest or something. And I do have a lot of queer friends who love Owl House, I haven't seen it personally but I guess the show must be doing something right.

    It is really unfortunate that the Disney films don't have as much queer representation as the Disney channel. Like in The Owl House the main character is in a canon lesbian relationship and even kiss on screen and call each other their girlfriend, and in High School Musical The Series, the main character has two lesbian moms who actually spend time on screen together and two of the side/main characters are in a gay relationship that lasts like two seasons (so far, the show isn't over). I can think of more examples but those are the main ones. Miraculous Ladybug also has some queer characters. It sucks that they can't add them into movies like they can with shows.

    So nobody needs to hear my perspective on the Jungle Cruise dude but like. Simultaneously understanding that him being like that as a character is bad, but me being like that sometimes as a person is ok, requires a lot of mental gymnastics for me. Especially since him being so feminine is a big part of it, and me being trans is a big part of… me. (✨dysphoria✨)

    I dont think its necessarily that the character is bad but the big media circus of "look at our lgbt rep!" and patting themselves on the back for doing basically nothing that annoys people. Though also sometimes if a character is played by a straight actor and written by a straight writer it can feel different then if an actual queer person acts similarly. That what rubs some people the wrong way, it can feel like they're making fun of us. (i haven't actually seen jungle cruise yet though)

    @@Quentin-queerly sorry for jumping in here, but to answer your question: it's not about the confirmed labels/sexualities of actors, it's about the struggle of out queer actors not being cast for anything. i'm a queer person myself and i don't have a problem with straight actors playing queer ppl as such, but the fact that actors (esp hollywood actors) are still being advised to stay in the closet, and the on-going struggle of less famous queer actors being cast _at all_ is the big issue here. so imo until there's more equality for queer actors in general, there rly shouldn't be any straight actors cast in queer roles bc it's just a slap in the face for actual queer ppl. sexual preference is fluid and rly shouldn't be that deep, but unfortunately we live in a world where ppl are discriminated against for it and ppl DO make a big deal of it, therefore i see the pushback against straight (or at least 'not-out') actors in queer roles as a valid criticism.

    Thank you so much for pointing out Disney’s bullshit and doing it so thoroughly and so well! While it’s true there have been and will be a million “FiRsT DiSnEy GaY cHarAcTorS” in terms of movies, at least The Owl House has real, solid, good LGBT+ representation. 🏳️‍🌈 The main character is openly Bi and even gets a lesbian girlfriend in the second season, there’s a non binary character, and one of the characters has two gay dads!

    Disney makes each of their lgbt characters so unmemorable that nobody even knows about the last one by the time the next one shows up, so they can make a "first gay Disney character" as many times as they like. They can even get away with "first gay cartoon character" since lots of people think that "Disney" and "cartoon" are synonymous for some reason, even though Disney arguably isn't a proper animation studio at this point.
