The singer Der Graf commented on the background of the song to the Bild newspaper: "The death of my friend hit me deeply and inspired me to write this song for him".[2] This should be made clear by lines of text such as "I see a meaning since you are no more, because you have shown me how valuable my life is". In the newspaper interview, he continued: "I didn't know how much the text should also touch others who have lost a loved one. The response was overwhelming. In principle, I have my deceased friend to thank for this success. Because without the terrible tragedy of his early death, the song would not have existed. 'The Song ist pure lyricism

Born to live (Version #5 lyricstranslate) It’s hard for me, to live without you, To give myself fully, any day, any time. I often think back about what has happened, at that beloved past day. I imagine you standing by me and wherever I go, you still will be there by my side. I think about so much ever since you are no longer here Because you told me how precious life is. We were born to live with the wonders of our time To never forget, for all eternity. We were born to live for that one moment In which every one of us feels how precious life is. It still hurts to start over again, To accept something new, while feeling good. At this moment you’re close to me again, Like you were at that beloved past day. It is my wish to dream freely again, To look forward at the future without any regrets. I have found meaning again since you are no longer here, Because you told me how precious my life is. We were born to live with the wonders of our time To never forget, for all eternity. We were born to live for that one moment In which every one of us feels how precious life is. How precious life is… We were born to live… With the wonders of our time… Born to live! We were born to live with the wonders of our time To never forget, for all eternity. We were born to live for that one moment In which every one of us feels how precious life is. We were born to live with the wonders of our time To never forget, for all eternity. We were born to live for that one moment In which every one of us feels how precious life is. We were born to live...

For a soft one "I see the light" and I read that many foreigners love the german version of "colors of the wind". And for something really powerful and maybe even scary I would recommend the german version of "Hellfire". Everyone of them has a video with german and english subtitles on KZread. 🙂

The song is about the singers friend who sadly passed away. He's a very private person and never really gave away much about his personal life except in his music. Not even his real name is publicly known as he goes by the name "Der Graf" which is german for "The Count". He officially ended his career in 2016 when he stopped performing, he does however still write songs for other artists.

The video seems only linked losely to the lyrics. Der Graf sings about how to value your own life after loosing a person close to you and to appreciate the good moments you had with her and you should enjoy such moments. The children in the video are not having a good life and are exploited. But it seems they have a really strong bond and when they taking the money and buying all the sweets they also enjoy the lucky moment. The main theme is: live your life as the next day could be your last.

I actually like the song (musically and soundwise), though its pseudo-deep lyrics upset me. They pretend to be profound, but are poorly set and rhymed and hardly express the feeling of loss that he supposedly have gone through. Unfortunately, most contemporary German (i.e. not only German) singers/bands don't have capable texters. The bar is low today, so, I guess, many people will actually praise the song's depth.
