This was Unfuwain's last race and there was every chance that he would have been the best older horse in 1989 if he hadn't got injured.

"officially" they said he had become to difficult to train.

@@jamesmenzies7986 I believe it was injury that was the official reason for his retirement although some say it was convenient to stop him running against his half brother Nashwan, but I don't believe that to be true, he was definitely a group one winner in waiting until they retired him.

@@nightowl7459 They would have continued racing Unfuwain if it was fit. They could have kept Nashwan at 10 furlongs and Unfuwain at 12 furlongs and there were plenty of races for both at these trips. Nashwan didn't truly stay 10 furlongs so they wouldn't necessarily have met either.

@@jamesmenzies7986 I'm sure that there was plenty of options open to the horse over a mile and a half they could have ran him in without clashing with Nashwan.

A course record at the time, Unfuwain was definitely one of the best racehorses never to collect a group one victory.

to think Unfuwain was at least a 10 length better horse on soft ground!

@@frankschlanker I'm sure that was the case, my dad's used to talk about horse and he always said that Unfuwain was one of the best never to win the top prizes, and claimed that running it was funny he was considered a soft ground specialist yet manager a course recorded at Newmarket on fast ground, I take it you are not taken with Frankle?.

@@nightowl7459 Frankel on a straight track was something else. But when you look at his form with a bend it wasn’t so good, for some reason 🤔 His win at York in the Juddmonte is the most overrated performance out with his Guineas win! But to me on a straight track he was something else(except his Guineas win) On bare form he beat a listed winner from the AW by 5 lengths

@@frankschlanker I absolutely agree, he was good but I don't hold him as high as other seemingly do, I think his win was good because of the raw power he seemed to possess and the fact it was his first attempt at 10 furlongs, but I don't think the opposition was that great, the fact that he started 10 to 1 on and yet he was trying out a new trip says something about the quality of the race, as for the Guineas it seemed he had just bolted and Queally couldn't hold him, I think his ratings had more to do with the fact that he was unbeaten rather than what he beat, I still think there's a few horse of the past who would have gave him a proper race on if he had bumped into them.
