It's really weird that Seinfeld is now one of those people complaining that "you can't say anything edgy anymore" when he was never edgy in the first place... back when he was at the height of his popularity, the comedians who WERE edgy would even ridicule him because his style of comedy was so simple and inoffensive

  • @TSBJunkie

Right. I can't think of a single Seinfeld episode that is remotely edgy, especially by today's standards. What I love about Seinfeld is the same thing I love about It's Always Sunny: awful people doing sociopathic things without an ounce of sentimentality. It's the way comedy should be done. Again, the influence of Larry David is evident, because when you compare Curb to Jerry's awful projects like Bee Movie, The Marriage Ref, and this garbage, the difference is night and day.

@@TheRichardson711 Or it could also be a completely fake issue that affects nobody, yet people use it as an excuse to blame others because they’re stuck in the past and refuse to update their material. Lots of vaudeville comedians used to complain that their style of comedy was outdated too. Times change, people should too. All day long I watch videos of people being funny on KZread, like comedians, streamers, reaction content, and scripted videos. And you can find lots of funny comments too. Nobody gets canceled. Then on the other hand we have whiners who spend all their time attacking others for denying them the ability to be funny. Something isn’t adding up.

Bee Movie is also so absurd and strange that it manages to be funny in spite of itself, just not for the reasons it was trying to be funny. it's funny as a spectacle, an insight into jerry seinfeld's bizarre fucking brain and complete disregard for the entire genre of children's animation. like he only understands the incredibly surface level things like "bright colors" and "talking animals (or bugs in this case)" and "no cussing," but other than that it's just this bizarre, cynical, aimless satire of... something? and it exists in this odd space that feels like it's made for nobody, but packaged in a way that makes it kind of fascinating. like. the human lady fucks a bee. i get the feeling this has none of that.

At the same time, you have jokes for 5-year olds that older viewers would groan at, as well as a glaring lack of commentary in a film wanting to be satirical & touting how "Kellogg's didn't give us permission for this" that could turn away anyone expecting something more biting. I get the vibe that Kellogg's isn't the target of the humor so much as it's more just part of the setting. Jerry Seinfeld just talks about being funny and how’s he a comedian and he had everyone on his show do the same “oh Jerry, he’s a funny fuck” When in reality he just isn’t funny. Jerry Seinfeld doesn't know how to write past the premise. Its like he thought "wouldn't it be funny if a honey bee discovered that humans steal their honey and then it sued the human race? Yeah thats funny." And then he stopped there and didn't think to question how to make a good story out of that.

His material works best as a stand-up performance, by telling a simple observation in a funny way that has its own built-in point. But in other media this falls flat without a vision that can illustrate a joke without just telling it directly to us.
