That's a special position called a Libero. They're a defensive specialist so they only play in the back row and can't spike the ball or block. Because of this, they're allowed to rotate on and off the court as many times as they want during a game (there's a limit for other players on the team) and to make it easier for the refs to officiate all of this, they where a different colored jersey. It's similar to goalies in soccer.

This USA women’s team really could use Eggleston at OH (6-rotations) in the future. They are needing another dominating OH and I think Eggleston will be the answer.
