The "Scat" is referred to as in Jazz, where the singer/vocal just sings using no words, for the part in "Shabadabadia, shabadabadia" The heartless part comes from the lyrics itself, where a man is pledging help from the heavens as he has no luck in anything in life.

You guys missed the point of the long guitar intro entirely. Of course it's repetitive and drawn out. Think about it. This song is about the endless toil of life never being rewarded. You do the same thing over and over and over again and the reward never comes. You never get the sake. You never find what you're after. Thus, the melody at the start is repeated many times. It's the hard work being put in. Once the lyrics come in, the despair has already set in. When will come the day that my work pays off? The song eventually leads us down to more flourishes and flashiness, culminating at the end with the wisdom that one's own success and fulfillment isn't what's important. Everyone is in the same boat. It's better to wish for the good of everyone than for the self. And turn in your metal card if an eight minute song is a turnoff. This ain't Radio Hits time, gentlemen.

They're from Japan, been at it for like 30 years. Only recently have they gotten more attention from people reacting to this video, and they just played their first gigs outside of Japan in Europe. Scat is the shabadabadia part, think I heard somewhere that heartless isn't the perfect translation, but I don't remember. Namahage is their other most popular song and it's great, but I really love Odoru Issunboushi, there's a great live version of it on youtube. React to those next.

Guess you guys have got 22 albums worth of gloriousness to catch up on \m/ Yes, they're Japanese. They just toured out of Japan for the first time this month! Largely due to that video being promoted by yt and everyone loving it. They uploaded a live video of this song in Camden, London (from Feb 21st) earlier today. They're playing Austin Texas on March 18th Maybe Namahage or The Colour Out of Space next :)

I’m glad you guys discovered the secret! The Japanese title is actually “Expressionless Scat” or “Scat without Feeling”. It’s ironic because the lyrics, as you noted, are very spiritual and emotion-filled. It’s the plea of a man who felt his life has never met with success or great fortune yet partway through he realizes that there must be thousands of people who feel like him and in the end he wishes for blessings on everyone.

Why didn't I see this three weeks ago? Scat was more jazz to me than feces, so when this video showed up in my recommendations I was more intrigued by old Japanese men who did not hide their age (when most Japanese bands do) still in a band. But damn, the first time I heard it I knew it was special. I didn't play it with subs, but there was something that tugs at the soul, so when I watched it with the lyrics it became clear that it was a real prayer. Powerful song. The gods granted their wish.

The issue with translating Japanese songs into English, is Japanese bands have a very high penchant of singing entirely in metaphors that can and usually do get lost in translation so it's impossible to know what the song actually means just reading the words without knowing the actual meaning behind them. Ningen Isu in particular as they draw heavy inspiration from classic Japanese literature. I mean, Ningen Isu (Human Chair in English) itself is a reference to a short story of the same name written in 1925. So they're all about metaphors and double meanings that make perfect sense in Japanese....but not so much in English.

I love the long intro, slowly building up and then suddenly cutting back to give you a bit of a jolt. It changes just a little bit at a time and then drawing it all back lets you notice it more. I tend to really like longer songs in general, actually. One of my favourite songs is Dogs by Pink Floyd at 16 minutes. I don't think it would work as well if it was shorter.

They spent about their first 25 years largely in obscurity (they were working day jobs still), before finally breaking through in Japan in about 2013-2014, that got them some traction, they started to get really popular online and now they've been snowballing in popularity steadily since, even going overseas for a few shows for the first time in their career earlier this year. Part of them never catching on was due to location, being from the city of Hirosaki, up north in the fairly rural Aomori prefecture, when most of the country's music scene is based between Tokyo and Osaka, which is where the internet has really helped them finally build the fanbase they deserve. They're absurdly talented as well as consistent; with over 20 albums you'd be hard pressed to pick out a dud. They skillfully fuse prog rock, heavy metal, hard rock and doom metal in different combinations for a unique package every album, they even have a few thrash metal songs.

It’s a band that is not famous in Japan Unfortunately, even if I ask 10,000 people, only one person knows it. I'm glad that people from overseas listen to it even if many Japanese don't know… NI N GE N I SU is a heretic, unlike other Japanese musicians. Most of Japanese songs are love songs. However, this band deals with serious and important issues that other bands do not, such as the view of life, religion, morality, and life and death.

As far as I know, Ningen Isu usually create their lyrics off folk lores, tales, books, etc. Heartless Scat, I think, is based on Le Miserables (あゝ、無情), a French novel. 無情 means heartless. The novel is about a man's journey to salvation and redemption after being jailed 19 years for stealing a bread for his sister's hungry kids.

"heartless" because (in the guitarist's own words) the narrator is selfish in the first two verses, then realizes there are tons of other living things in the world, and becomes self-less in the final verse when he concludes all other things deserve a light shone on them too. A truly touching lyric. Crazily ironic, as *this* is the song that brought them sudden international recognition after 30 years (a song whose first half is all about failure in life).

Great to see you two get it at the end. These guys have been on the Japanese music scene for more than 30 yrs ( zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E4%BA%BA%E9%96%93%E6%A4%85%E5%AD%90 ). And "scat", yeah. First there's the translation problems from Japanese, where it means one thing, to English, where it means something else. Just like in english one word or a combination of words may have multiple meanings depending on the context. Some meanings are sarcasm or double-entendres that aren't meant to be taken literally. The Japanese have a different mental relationship with "scat/poo" than do Westerners. There are many poo related cartoons & illustrations that are very culturally connected. The most famous being Makoto Chan. And 2ndly, Scat is a very well known & popular music & vocal style that persists to a lesser degree today. kzread.info/dash/bejne/kYts1cd8ZtedlKw.html or kzread.info/dash/bejne/iY2uzNluga7YqKw.html or kzread.info/dash/bejne/aX2opNx9l8nJkaQ.html or kzread.info/dash/bejne/pI6jm6qYm8TYhag.html and of course kzread.info/dash/bejne/oKxkj6RmfNyan7Q.html !!

A matter of the word 'scat' was a little surprising to me. I'm a Japanese, but I can still remember 'Scatman(Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)', so I've thought that meaning of 'scat' as nonsense voice imporovisation would be widely known in US. In Japan, the end of 1960's, 'Yoake no Scat' by Saori Yuki was a big hit, the song starting with scat 'Lu lu lu lu...'. So, to us older Japanese, the title seems to come from not only 'Shabadabadia', but also 'Lululu lululu'. Her performance with Pink Martini several years ago is on YT.

Heartless scat - NINGEN ISU BAND If you, Holy Angels, do exist in this universe Will you bless me on the cheeks? With my painful effort never paid off I've just been standing in the shadow Will the day come someday when I can fly high in the sky? Will the day come when I can see the Sun? Tell me, Holy Angels Shabadabadia Shabadabadia Babababa Shabadabadia Shabadabadia Babababa If you, Divine Goddess, are staying hidden somewhere Why don't you smile at me on my forehead? I've never tasted the nectar of victory I’ve never succeeded in love Will the day come when I can get intoxicated by the victory? Will the day come when I can embrace love? Tell me, Divine Goddess Shabadabadia Shabadabadia Babababa Shabadabadia Shabadabadia Babababa Countless stars are twinkling in the sky Every one of us is under them With a thousand wishes in each heart Lululu Lululu If you, Lord Buddha, really exist in some place Please have mercy on me, too Having nothing precious in my possession Desolated Isolated I've been living my life with a series of failures Will the day come when I can totally be satisfied? Will the day come when my dreams come true? Tell me, Lord Buddha Shabadabadia Shabadabadia Babababa Shabadabadia Shabadabadia Babababa Shine a light on my life Shine a light on my future Shine a light on every creature Shine a light on tomorrow for all

To me the heartless part is when they were talking about their misfortunes, never loving, having success, etc. That's why they pray to Buddha for blessings. The scat part is the "shabba dabba dia" chorus. Scat is a singing style although it's used in jazz. It's nonsensical words in music.
