This is by far my favorite video of Freya. It helps understand that Freya is a good dog and still learning. Just like all dogs. Showing only the “good behaviors” would be so misleading. So I’m so thankful you made this video happen. It also better helped me understand your training method. I found it hilarious when she bites the pouch 🤣 I didn’t realize how floppy and big her ears were until this video became it’s filmed from your point of view. It is so adorable ❤️

When my pup pulls recently I’ve been making him return all the way to me and touch for focus and a reset. It may help with pulling and directing that engagement. Also I love this, I think as owners we put a lot of pressure on our puppies to be 100 percent upstanding citizens when just like us they are a work in progress. Thank you. I always try to put in perspective that my puppy is always learning and growing and I need to be empathetic with that. Instead of scrutinizing what he is not good at, I try to focus on all the amazing things he is learning and has learned to do in the short time we’ve been together.

I do the same sometimes and then I have to refocus myself that Freya IS amazing and VERY well trained, but she is a high energy PUPPY hahahahah. she is going to be hyper and excited and we're working on that!!! but toddlers can't sit still either hahahah ❤️

Honestly the hardest part about training Freya is training the people AROUND freya!!! it takes time!!! the things we struggle with NOW is honestly because of other people letting her do it (jumping, pulling, etc.) and it takes longer to correct those kinds of things without consistency!

I love it that you release leash pressure when she's at your side. Something that has helped me with public training, is when I ever ask for like a sit in a place that was too hard, my dogs have learned that a slight (and steady) upward pressure on the leash means sit. They totally know have control over the leash pressure because they know how to turn it off. That way I don't accidentally untrain the command "sit" by teaching her that sometimes she doesn't have to. It's been a useful extra communication tool for distraction spots, and is easier to communicate than bending over and reaching my hand out to bush butt down. Awesome video!!

I love this video so much!! I’ve been watching your videos of freya since you first brought her home and have gotten so many tips from watching your videos! My pup is 5 months old now and I often find myself comparing him to other dogs that I see online (a lot of people I follow/watch are dog trainers for a living and/or have well-trained service dogs), so it’s so nice to see a truly unedited video like this! Makes me want to video a training session like this for myself

Love seeing this video and it makes me feel better that my aussie pup isn't the only like this. Definitely will try the squeeze pack with whipped next time we go to the pet store so he is more focused.

YES! It takes FOREVER hahahah. for some it's quick and others it's long. and honestly training and progression is NOT linear!! we have ups and downs and things she used to be PERFECT at we have to go back and work on again and others she holds onto. it's interesting!!! but yeah, even a year later she still pulls. but we'll get there! :) ❤️

You should consider trying a gentle leader for her pulling and stuff. I have one for my dog-aggressive pup and having that control is amazing and she doesn't pull me around anymore, after a few corrections she is walking nice and calmly. I think Freya would thrive with one!

Yes my puppy is a puppy puller and he wears a gentle leader which helps so much. It doesn’t hurt him. It just helps with his pulling

Hurting the dog is a huge misconception with gentle leaders (hence the name GENTLE leader) it is not meant to be yanked, just like any other collar is not. It is actually the best option for leash pull training. A light tug and instant release does the trick. So I am so glad you mentioned this! Although Freya seems to do pretty good overall

Just wanted to say that the level of adversity of a tool depends completely on the dog, I put a gentle leader on mine and she threw herself to the ground multiple times. Pretty much had a meltdown, I was using extremely gentle pressure/guidance to see how she responded and she couldn’t handle it at all. Do not continue to use a tool if your dog responds this way even if it is advertised as “force free” it definitely was not that way for my dog, you need to work with the dog in front of you and listen to their cues :)

She is so exited at the store 🤪I use a lead and it has help lot more and when she doesn’t have it I just remind her to be slower and she does listen better that before

What an amazing video. We have a Frisian Stabyhoun who is almost 1 year old, and I am amazed to see how similar Freya’s behaviour is to that of our dog. I think they would get along very nicely, if it weren’t for the fact that I live in the Netherlands 😅😅

Just a helpful tip - I found that using a harness with the leash instead of just a collar (they can wear collars and harnesses at the same time) it gives you more control and when she is pulling it won’t choke her as much. Idk that’s just what I do and it works for me. Love you guys!

since this video we've re-introduced harnesses into her life. She's never liked them as a puppy and so we've had to do a lot of work to get her to wear them hahah 💛

Loved this video! I’d love to see one about stopping your dog from barking. My Aussie is 7 months and barks at people and dogs. She just recently started and I don’t know what to do. I try to pull her away from the situation but I’m there is more that can be done.

i agree with this one! I saw a video once saying “in an emergency would you shout ‘can you sit’ ‘can you down’ or would you just shout ‘sit ‘down’” so it may be worth having a go at just having sit, do what’s best for you guys though!

hahaha no SERIOUSLY!!! I want to share that! she's not perfect! she's a puppy too lol.

I know I might get hate for this , but I still want to suggest it, since it made wonders for my dog (who's 10 years btw, so it's definatelly a process to train him). Also, great vid! So what I found super helpful with engagment was a slip lead. It doesn't hurt the dog, just puts a little more pressure on when it pulls. And you wouldn't believe how quick of a process it was, I needed the slip only for a week and then I removed it at all as my pupper was perfect with heel and not pulling at all. You can search up Fenrir Canine Academy here on yt, they do absolutelly amazing videos there!

You are doing a fantastic job with your pup, the only thing that I would say is that when you give a command such as "sit" or "down," you tend to put a "can you" statement before. Meaning you ask your dog, "can you sit?" versus telling them to "sit." Just a tiny thing that I noticed that will overtime build your team's confidence!

I’m still catching up on all the Freya vids 😆 but one thing I wanted to point out is that the salt on the ground can give puppers chemical burns on their paws so may need to invest in some boots for this winter! (also for hot concrete)

Does freya know wait and focus? After teaching my pup those he now waits and focus (makes eye contact) with me a lot more unprompted! Which is great when being out in the real world

It might be helpful for you to teach/use a leave it command, especially when there is salt and other things on the ground that you don’t want her trying to eat. Loved the video though!

I’d definitely recommend this as well because even though you use uh uh, that’s not very directional on what she needs to actually do. Also, I’m not sure the little clicking sound you make to get her attention is working towards direction either. Working on heel would be my biggest suggestion here because it seemed to be when you wanted to correct direction or for her to follow you. Overall though this video is a really good outlook for newer dog owners or people working on training because its more “live” reactions

she has a leave it command and knows it very well! :) but she also just leaves things alone now and sometimes I just say no and talk to her because I just like talking to her hahahha. she wouldn't eat the salt or anything like that. but if she started 100% her leave it command would be used. I just talk to her constantly like she can understand what I'm saying hahahah

This is super helpful! I feel like my puppy is a dumpster fire compared to Freya! She is going to a month-long training program, so hopefully that will help. My mom has a lot of trouble getting her in her crate... any tips? I know I need to work on consistency though!!

i recommend only short ammounts of non remote professional training since it can ruin the bond with your dog . especially aussies being more prone to separation anxiety it could actually make it worse even for 2 weeks . so a month is way to long . if ur not being consistent and it’s to much where u feel as tho u needed to send her away for a month maybe u aren’t patient enough for this breed ? is this ur first dog ? how is she now 4 mo later ? i really hope u didn’t send her away from a month as a puppy .

You should consider a gentle leader or a herm springer prong collar for her pulling and sniffing and stuff! I have both and they both work amazing. Also may try teaching her a leave it command, that’s is always helpful. Freya is so prettyyyy!!

I have an 11 month Aussie and I'm getting ready to transition her out of her puppy food. I am currently feeding the grain free blue Wilderness food, but am not sure if continuing her on grain- free is healthy for her. What are you currently feeding Freya ?

she currently eats Zignature Limited Ingredient food, specifically the Salmon and Trout flavor!

You should try not giving her the treat until she is sitting at your hip beside you, that encourages her to stay at your hip and when rewarding say heal, she will associate better

She mentioned this in previous videos. She does reward with regular treats too but Freya really loves peanut butter and whipped cream. And the easiest way to bring it is in the pouch. So she uses the pouch for “high value” treats for when they go somewhere that is very distracting so that Freya pays more attention to her rather than what’s around her. Hope this helps!

And she has 3 jobs, a boyfriend, and a very high energy puppy. She’s probably very busy. Honestly, I’m not sure how she does it. I also have an aussie pup and I only have one job and I’m a veterinary technician student and I still feel like I don’t have enough time

Sorry! Yes, I am very busy with 3 jobs hahaha. But I try to get back to every comment as I can!! I use the squeeze pouches for liquid treats (of course because they're messy) and typically those are of higher value to Freya so when I really need her to pay attention or reward her heavily for doing the right thing I can use that which means more to her than just her normal dog food kibble. although I use those too!! It just depends on the situation :)

I don't know if you've done this before as this is my first time seeing your channel and I'm not pressuring you or telling you have to do this at all but your dog actually looks like she would do really good with a slip collar. The best trainer I can find that uses one is Upstate Canine Academy on KZread. I know that maybe you want to start teaching her how to use that leash but not pull so hard and if you use a slip collar first you could teach her how to heel but also teach her to have a break command so she could go sniff and be a dog, but be able to teach her how to heel when she needs to, especially without treats but I know you are just using treats as a reward system for this. I would say use a prong but that is an uncomfortable question for a lot of people so I would never have people use a prong if they don't feel comfortable with it. I understand what your doing is a lot of conditioning and a slip collar might be really good with this in teaching her what she can and can't do and might be more clear to her. The slip collar just controls her head which when a dog moves, wherever their heads move or points at they go, so if you control their head you can control where she goes. I hope that makes sense, sorry for the long comment though lol. I just think she would do great on a slip!

This is an older vid now so maybe leash pulling isn't even an issue anymore - but I'm noticing you're giving Freya treats after stopping/sitting when she pulls the leash. I'm just speculating here because I've seen this before, but it looks to me like Freya is already anticipating getting the treat after pulling. This means pulling is a behavior she can do to make you ask her to sit and then get a reward. This lessens the punishment of stopping when moving forward a bit, cus at least she knows she gets a treat right. I would let the walk resuming be the reward in this scenario. Just a thing I noticed, Freya is very well trained and lucky to have such a loving owner.

Ok I’ve noticed in pretty evey video that you’ve walked Frey’s she still has that habit of pulling. I’m sure that’s annoying and at inconvenient, what has work as a miracle for me is using a slip lead and that’s literally all you need some even make it so that you use it as a gentle leader. It’s takes practice for both you and her to learn how to use it properly without it slipping down and choking your dog. Now my puppy walks by side EVERY time ;) try YouTubing it and trying it if you’d like ;)

We have one and used it when she was a puppy puppy to initially teach her heel work. We could definitely bring it back out as a reminder since she's not as good on the leash as she used to be after her regression phase.

Fun fact! Aussies easily overheat and they prefer cold surfaces. Mine prefers the cold tile floor over his bed. Freya also has a cooling mat in her crate for that reason
