Alex: do you think if Alex Dawson had entered his image in the conservation category he would have still won the overall competition? I think a future episode on how to choose the right category when entering competitions might be a good topic. I had entered an image in the portrait category which turned out to have the largest number of entries whereas perhaps I might have done better if I had entered it as a macro. It would be good to understand what your thought process is when you enter your own images into competitions. I remember when you won WPY with an image under the oil rig in California and I think you entered it into the bird category which helped to differentiate that image from others.

Interesting question. And I don’t know the answer. I don’t think that Alex Dawson would have done that, because he very much sees this image as a documentary shot, and it is us as viewers who attach the conservation message to it. In fact, this picture has received huge amounts of press, and the press have primarily run it with my judges, comments, talking about conservation rather than Alex‘s description of the shot. The first thing I would say i that in UP we do not move pictures to other categories when judging. We see it as part of the challenge for the entrance to select the correct category. As you say, other contests happily do this, and my ghost pipefish photo from WP Which was the category winner for natural artistry, I had actually entered into the Underwater category.
