What most people dont think about is that we can both build floating as non water floating constructions. Im sure there will be a ton of freedom on how to construct those. Imagine creating a sort of cast/construction around link then somehow get this in the water to then let the whole thing sink to the bottom with Link in it. Im almost 100% sure that this is a possibility in the game as there seems to be a lot of freedom with the ultrahand. The game developers would have thought of this and would never allow for players to break the game in such a way so they have to include underwater exploration otherwise people will glitch out on the bottom of the sea . Hope this is making sense to people? XD

Unsure if this is even what people are implying, but: When Ascend is available under the surface of the water, the most likely explanation is that it can be activated to quickly return to the water's surface. Meaning it cannot be used to move Link downwards, under and into the water, rather only to provide Link this convenient means of return. Like you've said, some other piece of equipment (Zora armor, heavy boots, etc.) or ability will be necessary to access underwater regions. They could even just let Link swim down (and in all directions) from the get-go--but I doubt it.

I'm confused about the underwater stuff but I'll lay out all the stuff I've been thinking about. A) yea, the ascend ability you mentioned in the gameplay trailer B) the recall ability is the same as zeldas tear design, one of the pins in the collectors edition is translated to wind I think and the trailer showed loads of flying (#3). Maybe something related to sidons tear is water ability related. Seems to be that the tears (5-7 accessible?) and the zonai green hand abilities (3-4?) are different C) BOTW already has the underwater corals and ground laid out despite only being able to see this through glitches D) the recent trailer, small thing but being able to fully submerge in the water bubble E) leaked art book, there is a ship design but this could be the flying ships in the recent trailer F) leaked art book glowing fish images and what appears to be a water like ceiling G) the ascend animation is different from all the other swimming animations including going up a waterfall H) the new snippets on the website show a whirlpool in lake hylia. People say this is to access underground, which it could be. But there is a malice pocket right next to it so I don't see the need for that I) there is a glyph on a wall at lake hylia, the glyphs are suggested to be dungeon locations, query underwater dungeon? J) the mention of diving by Aonuma K) I don't understand how with the ultrahand ability they can restrict underwater access. People will surely be able to make something that puts link underwater without dying. How would they completely separate underground and water? L) they didn't show zoras domain at all in the trailer, not sure if this means anything spoilery M) can someone correct me, I think I'm remembering this wrong but weren't there some ideas for BOTW related to water that were scrapped?

This is kinda weird but I have thought for a long time that the zonai were not magic users, but wielders of advanced technology. All the trailers and demo seem to pont that way, or at least kind of. Especially after seeing Link's hand powers, it seems more like matter manipulation rather than magic.

That may be true, but the fun of BOTW was exploring a new Hyrule like we’d never seen before, making the world itself kind of like one big dungeon. I would love to see traditional dungeons come back and I think they still will. If they don’t, I think Nintendo will up the ante on what can be explored in this new “unknown Hyrule” and we’ll all still be captivated.

Though it is early to say, id counter and say there is no option to do underwater or to dive. In the menu buttons at bottom of screen, link only has “dash”. No ability to go underwater. How can you ascend if you have no option to descend? You mention wearing boots, but that is speculation. Nintendo said “with limitations”, meaning even from a cave system if the final destination is water i figure you will end up on surface or it will not allow you to activate.

Imagine 6 years of development with no underwater exploration… that would be such a disappointment because it’s one the best ways to make the surface of hyrule feel new and exciting in a way that it won’t feel like we only have to look forward to sky islands to feel like it’s a new games . Yea I know that caves are new but it’s not enough without underwater exploration added too especially given that they had 6 years to work with the same assets.
@wizcatcheslightning

Agreed. They also had to remove a bunch of previous assets (sheikah shrines and sheikah guardians come to mind) to make room for the new ones, and data compression for storage gets more and more efficient every 2 or so years (completely headcanon comment there but hopefully you catch my drift)
