A beautiful poem. Perhaps my favorite. One thing I got from the imagery that you did not and that the significance of the car. It represents modern technology and the chaos it has inflicted on nature. The engine purring, the front lights pointing the way into the future and "I stood in the glare of the warm exhaust turning red..." That's blood imagery. The car lighting the way forward representing machinery prominent place in the future and behind a widening trail of blood representing the destruction of nature. The best thing the man believed he could do for the dear is make sure it was never born.

Thanks John... I also see it in this human influence VS nature sense as the fawn representing more than the individual. The unborn animal becomes allegory for the entire future of the natural world, we feel sadness about our impact upon wilderness and wild things but as the vehicle comes toward us, we have no option but to push it aside. At least this is how it feels to me, especially with the current state of the world.
