HypertronDE, I know that. The point is that there's so little armor on the TIE to begin with, that taking any more away would result in the hull integrity going from that of a paper airplane, to a paper airplane that just got torn into a thousand little pieces.

I heard a fan-idea about the sounds of ships in space battles. They're simply a way the scanners and speakers work together to let the pilot know about incoming ships - from behind for instance, without having to completely rely on looking at the scanners while dog-fighting.

Something I've considered regarding the cheapness of TIEs has been that the Empire seems to have been at risk of stolen equipment. Plenty of Rebel equipment was stolen from the Imperials. If Imperials fielded more powerful, and expensive, fighters (like the X-Wing), a group of Rebels stealing them would be a bigger loss than if a few TIEs were stolen.

How many Galactic credits does it cost the Empire to *train each Tie pilot?* Compare that to the cost of the fighter and you have a crazy _false economy._ Not to mention just having a tougher fighter would allow the pilot to take more risk to score kills, with an unshielded ship they have to avoid some situations that a shielded fighter could ignore or at least endure. A more expensive fighter would be far more effective, say a *Tie Defender* _without a hyperdrive_ - to prevent defections, but the saved weight could be used for more torpedos, better performance or even better shields (IMHO the best option, having a tanky fighter is a great morale booster and enemy demoraliser). And the lack of a hyperdrive would save a lot of the extreme cost, it's an expensive component (perhaps even lose the tractor beam, although it has combat utility). The hyperdrive equipped Defenders could be used by special trusted Hunter Killer squads that go on the offensive (and maybe have family within reach of, or even members of the Empire). A cheaper option than a stripped out Defender would have been upgrading the *Tie Striker* design to a full space fighter (it was capable of and used for space combat, and even had full life support). The wing profile was far superior from a dog fighting perspective, as it didn't present such a large target profile from side on and didn't obscure pilot vision. Perhaps it could be moved to a traditional wing position to be even more perpendicular to the pilot. Add in extra shields (using the internal space, it's useful even for just getting through reentry fast) and you have a fighter that can out fight and _out last_ a Rebel fighter in space combat, and if the fight goes down to the atmosphere (either the Rebels are raiding a Imperial facility, or the Empire is attacking a Rebel base or unruly planetary forces) then the Tie Striker has a vast advantage - usually the situation where it isn't supported by a Imperial capital ship and could use the edge. Plus it saves cost for the Empire as the fighter can do double duty when protecting a planet or orbital facility (like Scarif). Add in some concussion missiles for dealing with Ace Rebel pilots in their best fighters and it's still a cost effective solution, concussion missiles are cheaper than a new ship and pilot (even if spammed at the start of the engagement), and protons aren't needed as bigger ships will be engaged by ISD's ect. Maybe some Tie pilots even defected partially because they resented being put in a cheap suicide sled when there were better fighters available, they felt expendable when they had been trained to consider themselves elite.

I seem remember one of the old games partially justified it by TIE Pilots being equipped with a decent personal shield generator and a pretty reliable ejection system so the pilots would often be picked up after the battle by friendly forces, but I haven't seen that anywhere else. Of course the point still stands, what's the cost of adding upgrades up front versus replacing whole destroyed units? You save up front but overall costs replacing destroyed fighters are astronomically higher versus spending more up front but having to replace less destroyed units overall.

Your forgetting the fuel consumption issue, its dramatically higher for Rebel fighters. The TIEs just use the same stuff as the Star Destroyers, and when spent, its put back in the main reactor and re-energized. The Rebels have to re buy the fuel over and over. Despite what a few hero Squadrons preform, Imperials do tend to have the higher KDR even when outnumbered.

  • @FamousWolfe

    @FamousWolfe

I mean, I can kinda see your point. However, you gotta remember that Deflector Shields are very expensive to manufacture and eat up tons of power, which would require a more powerful power generator, which in turn is likely to be bigger/bulkier so therefore you’re gonna need more powerful engines/thrusters so the fighter can maintain its maneuverability, but once you add in all these components and factor in the the price, you basically are better off just designing a whole new star fighter which explains the TIE variants. Another thing to consider is that while Deflector Shields can increase survivability, overall your odds of survivability aren’t that much better. It’s basically like wearing a bulletproof vest in real life, sure a cop’s chances of surviving a gunshot are better, however they can be defeated by either aiming for a part of the body that isn’t covered (in Star Wars deflector shields have to be angled correctly in order to be most effective), or by using a bigger gun capable of punching through it (such weapons are of course illegal for civilian use). In real life, most of the time the best defense is having a lot of troops capable of filling the air with more bullets than your enemies (this is how the vast majority of wars have been fought, by using overwhelming force). Just my two cents, that’s all. Really does say a lot about a Galactic Empire that’s willing to put its best & brightest pilots in death trap starfighters though lol.

The TIE Interceptor has the exact same model of Laser Cannon as the TIE Defender and Avenger. They are for sure Heavy Laser Cannons. Though the Defender was the Empires best Star Fighter, the TIE Interceptor had the honor of being the Empires best dogfigher as it could do maneuvers not possible in most fighters, including deceptive delayed maneuvers. Theirs a reason Baron Fel stuck with the Interceptor and not a TIE Defender.

@@TheKingofbrooklin when you look at the coverage done on Imperial designs typically folks like Eckharts and Spacedock try to stick to verified canon sources over Legends material, thats why they sound very similar when doing breakdowns. Now as for the advantages, yes some Imperial designs definitely do have advantages but a lot of the times those advantages are overshadowed by the disadvantages. To use the TIE/Ln as an example its a very fast and maneuverable star fighter with a very good placement for its laser cannons and its very cheap which is good for mass production needs. However now you have to see whats the trade off for such a low cost and its speed and maneuverability: lacks a hyperdrive, lacks any significant armor, poorly designed cockpit, no life support, no warhead launchers, and a large target profile just to name a few. Everything has advantages and disadvantages and unfortunately for things like the mainline series of TIE fighters the disadvantages tend to out way the advantages.

Spa e Dock in his Sith Old Republic movie said that their ships had Heavy Turbos, not only do none of the books say that, they show the heaviest they had was Medium Turbos, while the most powerful weapons are super heavy projectiles like proton or concussion missiles. Eck makes bad matchups on his vs debates. In his Anti-Air debate, instead of using the All Terrain Anti Air Walker for the Empire, he used a toy of a moded ATAT with a rear facing Ion cannon. In Ecks Dropship vs debate he chose a Police Imperial troop ship, the Empire has almost 20-30 different dropships, lots are super heavily armed and shielded, the Empire conveniently lost. Instead of using fighters that would usually still be docked, for _point defense_ against hyperspace equipped raiders, a better solution would be *small gunships* that can remain on station for long stretches. Having a hyperdrive is irrelevant to whether a fighter is in a hanger or doing defensive patrolling of the fleet/facility, it only matters during a interstellar force projection attack when they have to travel inside a carrier. For routine day to day patrols sitting in a space suit for long boring periods is not a good option, and constant flight of a large number of fighters cost credits. A anti fighter ship that's big enough for a crew to remain on station around the clock is far more useful and quick in a emergency response situation. It doesn't have to be a large expensive corvette, just something shuttle sized (up to YT-1300/2300 sized) but with high sublight performance and bristling with laser cannons (and perhaps some concussion missiles). As soon as Rebel snub fighters jump in, it can start chewing them up. It doesn't even need a good hyperdrive if it's not going to pursue fleeing forces (although that would be useful, but more expensive), just good shields and armour, the speed and maneuverability to keep up with snub fighters and loads of point defense to wipe them out. And the crew can be 2 or 3 pilots on shifts and a bunch of gunners that require less training. It doesn't have troops for boarding actions, cargo space beyond rations (MRE's) or any other duties. You man the controls, you sleep in the bunks or use the basic hygiene and food facilities - which are separate, unlike the Millennium Falcon with it's Princess upgrade. If it's got a boxy shape or can fold wings into one, it can also be carried in lieu of Ties, in hangers on ISD's, or at least dock for resupply and crew rotation. Think of it as a super heavy fighter thats permanently on station.

Look at Episode IV. Watch the battle of Yavin. Count up the number of TIEs (8 + Vader) vs Rebel fighters (22 X-wings, 8 Y-wIngs). At the end, those 8 TIEs had K/D ratios of 2.75 or 3.15 to one, depending on how many actually fired a shot. I think all 6 of the initial group fired, and we see at least one of Vader's wingmen kill a Rebel X-wing in the trench. Per the canon films, the TIE/LN starfighter is superior to the X-wing. True, you could argue that these are Vader's personal squadron, and thus better pilots than average, but even if you half the effectiveness of the pilots, that is still a positive K/D ratio for TIE fighter. That means that the TIE does it's job, Rebel propaganda films notwithstanding.

That alone should be enough of a hint of this craft's true potential. -Tie Hunter: The imperial version of the X-Wing with S-foils to match. -Tie Phantom: The only Tie Fighter ever produced with a cloaking device. I disagree, though most TIEs are cheaper than the Republics and Rebels Fighters, the components and Avionics they do have is way more advanced. The TIE Fighter and TIE Interceptor are extremely modular. Fighters can be mounted with Shields and Projectile launchers and even sometimes a Hyperdrive. As for fuel consumption, it is unique to the TIE in the series, none of the Rebel fighters has a energy system that's like TIEs, they flat out burn up their fuel, while a TIE doesn't. Also because of this, this can require large fleets with lots of fighter wings to have to have a tanker in their fleet, while the TIES flat out use the same fuel in the Star Destroyer reactor, and when its reenergized, they just put it back in the reactor.

I suspect the pricepoint for TIE/ln as listed in WEG and later RPG guides is the cost for civilian militias or private citizens to purchase individual units. When purchased in bulk by the Imperial armed forces this price would be much less, possibly half or less. With the existing maintenance and launch facilities present in imperial capital ships and bases purchasing additional TIE craft is even more economical given eventual attrition.

Example of the (at the time) most dominant, powerful military empire unable to defend all of its assets (colonies): The Spanish Colonial Empire. During the Eighty Years War, the Spanish were at war with the Dutch who had seceded from the Spanish Empire. While the Dutch defenders, at first, struggled to put up a fight with the Spanish on land (the Dutch had to rely on inundated parts of land to deter the Spanish or drive them off), at sea it was a completely different story. Dutch seagoing vessels were faster, more maneuverable and thus more effective in combat. Spanish galleons were lumbering vessels that could only run with the prevailing wind. They had maneuverable galleys to but these were not ocean worthy and used in the Mediterranean Sea only. As the war progressed, the Dutch slowly started to be able to properly stand their ground on land (aided with looted money and treasure from their succesful war at sea and boosted by many foreign mercenaries that accounted for half of the Dutch army) while at sea, especially around the Spanish Main, the Spanish didn't even want to engage Dutch naval forces because these had become too large and powerful to take on so the Spanish galleons hoped to avoid them by remaining in port. The Spanish Navy's main purpose was to transport goods and treasure from the Spanish Colonies to Spain and to ferry troops from Spain to Holland and England (Spanish Armada). Their ships were not capable of ship to ship battle as was becoming the norm. The Dutch and the English on the other hand, were building more and better ships all the time.

Mitsubishi’s A6M zero (aka “zero”) was not a cheap, trashy plane. The Japanese navy’s demands for it were high, and the zero met them. It was faster than any other fighter produced before 1943, and was extremely maneuverable at low speeds. in a 1942 battle with well-trained English pilots, 36 Zeroes took on 60 British aircraft and shot down 27 of them, with the loss of just one Zero. The allies had no strategies against them in the beginning. The only reason the allies were eventually able to find its weaknesses is because they captured a downed zero. They were able to fix it, fly it, reverse engineer it, and see what it’s capabilities were.

A few things. 1) I guess I will never be happy with Disney Wars cause they will most likely never introduce the TIE ad/Avenger. 2) The comparison to the Zero falls short. The Zero was specifically built with range and manouverability in mind for which they sacrificed survivability and handling at speed. (which is very ironic when you take a look at japanese fighter tactics during WW2 and how they relied on speed). Though it does seem rather apt to compare training and selecting methods for the IJN fighter corps and the Imperial Navy (just that one was a resource strapped island economy not quite understanding industrial warfare and the other one was a galactic empire). 3) The Tie Advanced X1 didn't realy have a shorter profile. They simply changed the profile from being vertical to being horizontal. So you basically had an easier time hitting it with leading shots if those were on point while a basic TIE could easier evade side shots due to being more narrow. But the people making the Star Wars Universe probably didn't exactly care too much about those kind of details.

One bad thing about xwings having hyperdrives. Think about it. Flying 2hrs through hyperspace. Where do you go bathroom, can you snack on something? Sleep comfortably? A tie pilot sleeps in his rack, eats from the galley, bathroom is legit. Xwing pilots were mostly anyone who volunteered. Tie pilots were military trained and disciplined. Xwing pilots come out of hyperspace. They've eaten peanuts as a possible last meal before combat, a diaper filled pilot and 12 of his fellow pilots zeros in on their target. A well rested tie pilot and 72 of his military trained comrades fill the airspace. 72 guns firing at 12 Xwings. The Xwing pilot grits his teeth ready to fight. Uhhm, how many of you are gonna stick around? Yesterday you were flying over your farm and now you're fighting for your life in a sh.t filled diaper. Xwings start hitting hyperspace before they even get close to their target. They fly anywhere their hyperdrive takes them. Running from battle they aren't going back to base. They went home with a massive new fighter of their very own. That's real life.

So many lies and wrong headed opinions. The TIE series was designed in a modular manner to ease R&D in future ship designs as well as to minimize maintenance costs. Rebel fighter squadrons were notorious in the amount of maintenance that was needed to keep their ships flying, often requiring the use of astromechs to carry out in flight repairs due to the inevitable systems failures during routine flight. The advantage of commonality in equipment for armed forces cannot he overstated. The Bomber (TIE/sa) was not a slapped together affair but was a multipurpose chassis that could be reconfigured to perform boarding actions or as a simple shuttle. The Bomber even had heavier variants such as the Punisher/interdictor which included 4 munitions pods arrayed around a central cockpit module. A scalable design such as this speaks to much forethought in the design process. The lack of shielding on TIEs is exaggerated to say the least. At a minimum a spacecraft needs navigational deflectors to avoid micrometeorites collisions in normal flight. Surely TIEs come equipped with even this type of standard equipment. As to combat rated particle/ray shields, TIEs didn’t seem to need as much shielding as the less nimble and relatively sluggish Rebel ships thanks to the high degree of training for Imperial Fighter pilots and the superior engineering of the TIE series giving even the standard Fighter extreme agility. For canon examples of shielded TIEs see ANH during the Falcon’s escape from the Death Star, the effects of laser blasts hitting shields on the sentry TIEs is unmistakable. As for the lack of hyperdrives, this is a continuation of the Old Republic doctrine in which only long range bombers and recon craft had dedicated hyperdrives, with Fighter craft and interceptors using separate hyperdrive modules when operating far from capital base ships. One should not be surprised at this type of attack leveled at the excellent TIE series produced by Seinar. The New Republic has been spreading this misinformation since before its founding by terrorists and traitors.

Too bad they ditched the EU. Imagine the rebels in episode 9 getting pinned by a fully developped fighter based on the Tie-Phantom. That thing was frigging scary. It's only real downside being that they cannot fire while cloaked.

Heck, try the TIE Hunters. Piloted by Storm Commandos, they had shields, hyperdrive, blaster cannons, proton torpedoes and ION CANNONS! Which means that they can practically tear Rebel cruisers apart for breakfast.

I wish the Empire made Droid TIE Fighters like the Droid Starfighter in the CIS. Good way of having a hoard of fighters without costing lives.

They did in the Dark Empire comics, the World Devastators used them to swarm the first wave of rebel reinforcements, though that was the only time they were used

droid tri fighters are the best Starfighters in whole of star wars... no cost of life, not that much materials(VERY small), probably one of the best streamlined production capabilities, Overall rather cheap, you can fit at least 2 of them in place of a Tie or an X-Wing and if some blow up, it doesn't matter... very good weaponry, "impossible" turns in dogfights, since no Pilot OnBoard and Overall, cost, production, Combat capabilities, the best fighter from my pov

One thing I've always wondered is how did star fighter pilots deal with personal needs when they were in space?

Grand Moff Tarkin pretty sure a more apt comparison would be Fighter planes, not tanks. But ok. Where would the actual TIE tank and Tie crawler fit in all this?

Shock Trooper TV It is essentially a regular TIE, but with an extra pod next to it with two heavy laser cannons, controlled by a droid. Almost like an X wing.

Vogons flew flying bricks too, and they’re even nastier than The Empire. A Vogon would rather kill you than say “hello” to you.
