The weird part is also that I think they KNEW how weird the shift was, because in burial at sea they add that Fitzroy only did that because the Luteces (or however that's spelled) told her she needed to for the revolution to work. What is most mind baffling to me about RE 6 is the sheer amount of assets created for it. Each character has a unique UI and pause screen that reflects their design, there are sub menus for options and achievements that have there own 3d environments and animations. There is a Journey-like Online-Coop integrated into the single player system that no one talks about too.

I have a theory: when Ethan sticks his hand back on, the jacket also sticks together which implies it is infected with mould too, and his daughter ends up with the jacket at the end of the film. I think that the mould infected both Ethan and his clothes as one and they could bring him back in the next game!

I'm actually baffled by how many people are strongly reacting to Ethan reattaching his hand in RE8 when they already openly showed this working in RE7. When Jack hunts you for the first time and you time it a certain way so he gets you just before you reach the crawlspace, he aputates your leg with a shovel and splashes the fluid over it and says something like "Crazy how it works, right?!" and just puts it back on you. So Ethan reattaching his Hand like its nothing in RE8 isn't actually that big of a deal.

Having started with 6, every game since has felt incredible by comparison lol I think my order was 6, revelations 1&2, 7, Remakes 1-3, 5. It really feels like the series is at its best when you're running from safe room to safe room, studying your map, making tough decisions with your inventory, and then rushing back out into an environment where you don't seem reasonably capable of clearing all of the threats. So you take the calculated risk to always dodge past certain enemies, or you hope you won't have to go back that way again. And whenever you do try fighting something you're never sure how much ammo it will take, so you're maybe pausing a bit between shots hoping not to waste ammo on an already dying enemy, but that caution just lets them get closer and closer, threatening to eat into your similarly limited health resources. You never feel safe because no strategy seems entirely reliable. Obviously people memorize all the variables, over-expose themselves to the games, and then speed-run them, but that's not really a point I ever want to get to. The scary thing about this long video is it still doesn't feature Outbreak, Zero, or Revelations 1&2. I guess there's also like half a dozen other spinoff games but those are the most mainline games outside of the obvious numbered sequence.

Right? And when are we going to talk about the arcade shooter House of the Dead 2, which has the same concept, all kinds of weird, whacky creatures with no explanation until the finale, where you find out it's all genetic experimentation and is beat for beat RE1 where the villian presents the ultimate life form in his tube and this big boy immediately breaks out and kills his creator, drives you out on to a rooftop for the final battle, and the only reason HoD2 doesn't give you a rocket launcher is because they want draw that moment out as long as possible to make you spend more quarters to see the ending.

@@alsorew Revelations actually came out nearly a year BEFORE 6, funnily enough. Both were pretty rough. The first game was a bit limited as a 3DS port and was filled with boring action sections as a second character that should have been cut entirely. And the second game was more of a RE5 linear action game rather than a place you explore and open up over time. Between that and the bullet sponge bosses that made me and my co-op partner repeatedly ask "are we doing something wrong?" I struggle to call it a return to form. It was very much just more of the 5/6 era.

I do like the idea of playing RE2make and RE3make before the originals because it fits into my headcanon. The remakes are propaganda put out by Blue Umbrella (Chris' version of it from 7/8) to give "the final word" on the Raccoon City Incident, putting more focus on the hero cops who fought to save the city and the evil bad guys who tried to thwart them. The antagonists are given clearer motive to do what they did, which in turn posthumously absolves the original Umbrella of being "all that bad." It was just a few bad apples ruining everything. Don't worry, we're the "good" Umbrella now. We fight the bad people from the old, bad Umbrella. Everything's much more cut-and-dry. That makes RE2 and RE3:N the "real story" behind the events, and includes everything they would rather you forgot.

Ethan at the start of the game and on other interactions you can see that mentally he has been stuck on the baker house, just like a player replaying that game over and over again on his head of how traumatized and affected he is. Even learning various stuff to protect himself and having frictions in his relationship with mia. in a way is as if he died on the baker house and his soul was stuck there even though his body keeps living on and he knows it shouldnt have, he is living in borrowed time basically. the cutscene where he looses his hand and retatches it is made to exemplify exactly that he shouldnt be able to regrow his limbs and stuff like that, which was a mechanic on RE 7 actually where some enemies could cut off your limbs and you had to retatch them on the same way. Once miranda kills him and he comes back confirming his suspicions on what he became and why his daughter is special as well as the fear of her being like evelyn, his desire and love for his daughter lets him live on once more thanks to the power of the mold and so on. yet by his slow walk at the start of this and that well. he lost his heart... it feels as if once more he is living in borrowed time. The end of the game, seeing how Ethans regenerative powers and mold starts to fail him, how his body cannot go on and how he leaves his daughter and wife behind for the sake of protecting them, i think its life and the world catching up to him, indeed, he died on the mansion, he has been tormented by the shadow of the whole event who catched up to him and finally took his life... but at least those he cares and love will be safe and fine... and he can be happy with that. Sorry if the redaction is a mess, just felt i had to take this out my chest since this is one of the parts of the game that most got to me, and i kinda needed to defend it before i forget what i was going to say. Also i think its not that Ethans kid is working with chris exactly, rather chris trying to pay off for his mistakes and for the death of ethan, he decided to take care of her kind of like a father figure, and that she is kinda forced on to serving, idk whatever group thats keeping track on her since well. she is a dangerous Bio weapon who is useful for them and dangerous as well. Hope the next game deals with this stuff and the miss use of her for the sake of her powers and also how even though Ethan saved his daughter, she was not entirely saved in the end making the ending of RE 8 more depressing which i dont mind.

One of my favorite scares come from the 2nd game, in the interrogation rooms. You kill all the enemies in the one way dead end hallway with two doors on your first trip there. You can only go into one door the first time you go there, which is the side where you can't see through the two way mirror. You come back later to open the other door, the hallway is still empty of zombies and safe. You open up the second door to finally see what's hiding behind it and it's nothing. A totally boring room with nothing in it besides the ability to unlock an item you need but you need to go back to the other room to collect it. You go to grab the item in the other room and BAM a licker smashes through the two way mirror and scares the shit out of you. The best part is the moment you see that two way mirror you know it's going to be used for a scare. Even though you know, the game waits so long to pull the trigger and it lets you go into the other side just before the scare that you let your guard down completely. It's well done stuff.

Oooooooh, if only we can also get you to do fatal frame. That game is legit too scary, but I still love me some good ghost stories and even if it gives me anxiety, I still love a franchise that makes terrifying ghosts and makes it where the only way to stop them is to look them full in the face as closely as you can

Random fun fact: The whole "nuke" part of Raccoon City getting nuked was... never actually intended. It was *supposed* to be a high-yield thermobaric weapon, but this was... not actually communicated effectively in the original trilogy, so people just kinda... *guessed.* It doesn't help that the book that actually clarified this was never released in English.

I played RE5 couch co-op over two or three different sessions while on LSD, and it was... an experience. Both of us were expecting something more like RE4, and we kept breaking into giggles at how absurdly racist it was, augmented by tripping pretty hard the whole time. Was it a good time? I actually don't know. And we couldn't get past the final battle cos we ran out of ammo. And yet, it's still better than Code: Veronica.

How is it racist though? When the game is in an African location it's pretty obvious what colour the majority of enemies will be. There are Asian and European (white) enemies in re5 which people seem to forget about. You even play as a black woman also. It's like people want re5 to be racist. Sad.

I actually really love this conclusion because I am usually incredibly pretencious about media and I have realized the reason RE has become my favorite series of all-time is not because of its deep complexities but because of how it makes me feel. I am a five-foot nothing disabled woman who weighs about 130 pounds. I have had a bone marrow biopsy so very little scares me. In RE, I am ruthless. I am rarely shaken and I feel powerful in settings that are designed to strip me to the bone. "Dumb media" has a place next to Mozart and whatever indie film is on its way to Oscar glory. Who is really going to tell me what this series means to me?

While there is some gothic inspiration to House Beneviento and the puzzle boss fight of Donna/Angie in RE8, the clear inspiration for this sequence seems to be a love letter to Kojima Productions' "P.T." demo and how the insanity of quality of horror that possible Silent Hills game would have been. I saw it as Capcom tipping its hat and bowing in reverence to a fallen brother of a franchise.

Loving this so much! The idea of appreciating 'easy' horror is one I find very compelling, especially in light of the Call of Cthulhu game I run with close friends where there is an appreciation of cosmic horror and some of the larger themes that builds tension and fear, but what often lands are the soundtrack and jumpscare elements I use. Also the idea throwing out a bunch of seemingly unconnected elements focused on the horror of their existence and how that itself can create a that disconnection with a predictable world, that feeling that the worst thing you can imagine might happen because *anything* could happen! I'm definitely going to play with that! B^D (If any of the OG are reading this, I'm totally talking about another CoC game I run with other friends. . .you don't know them.)

Oh, man, Code Veronica being the first one I actually *played* (rather than watching someone else play while they promised I'd totes get a turn too, for sure), does a *lot* to explain my early impression of the franchise. (Incidentally, my story is similar to yours. Made it to the Tyrant boss fight at the end of the first section... with virtually no ammo, because even by pre-RE4 standards, ammo was *absurdly* thin on the ground in CVX, and the game offers you no recourse in that situation but to start over. There is no last-second ammo cache, no special trick you can use, and it's *entirely* unworkable with the knife unless you're the best RE player ever.)

My favorite part about resident evil is just how it takes suspension of disbelief and just plays ping pong with it. The basic setting is pretty simple: big pharma corp run by eugenicsists makes bioweapons, gets caught, does a terrorism and this repeats throughout the games. But the presentation goes from "oh this is a haunted house in the wood, sike it's actually an underground lab", to "terrorist attack in a major city" to "remote umbrella scientist starts a cult". It takes established horror tropes and goes "what if vampires existed but they are actually bioengineered by some scientist hiding in an old castle trying to sell them as bioweapons". Also the world is full of bored super locksmiths who make Myst-esque puzzles to unlock common doors that are akin to magic.

as someone who has a very hard time handling horror, i appreciate you making this accessible! might still need to watch some dumb videos to be able to sleep soundly, but your jokes and commentary were very grounding and comforting. also thank you for mentioning Mad Max: Fury Road! i think it might have to do with having ADHD, but the simplicity and vibrance of that movie makes it one of my favorites!! reminds me of the quote about how knowledge is knowing facts, wisdom (and teaching/accessibility) is knowing how to simplify them final compliments: the music in this was absolutely bangin' and i think your eyebrows are mad cute!

I appreciate that you also adore Claire a lot. She's absolutely my favourite RE character, with Leon close behind. That's partly why I have a (possibly nostalgic) fondness for Code Veronica X, since it was the only other mainline Resident Evil game she was in. (Sure she's a protag in RE: Revelations 2, but I haven't gotten around to playing that one, and from Noah's video, it doesn't sound good.
