Understanding pH, pOH, pKa, and pKb | MCAT Content

Do you ever get confused about whether a high pKa or low pKa corresponds with the most acidic solution? Same with pOH?
In this video I will cover how to keep these concepts straight by introducing the idea of the p-scale, the underlying scale that describes pH, pOH, pKa, and pKb. By understanding the underlying concept behind all of the different p-values we can not only keep the values and what they correspond to straight but also speed up our memorization. Instead of needing to memorize information for each individual scale you will only need to remember how p-values work in general.
We will also discuss how to solve log based p-scale questions and again since all of the p-values work in the same way we can apply the technique discussed in this video to all of the p-values.

never had a math or science teacher show me that simple trick for switching between log scales and their respective exponential forms, this was very helpful

Thanks for watching and the feedback. I am still trying to find the right speed for videos but I will definitely try to slow down a bit in the next one.

Your videos are amazing. You should make video on all content and either put it on KZread or sell it as an MCAT course. I would love to purchase your mcat course. It's 1000x better than other prep companies.

Quick question on 2:34 when it ask for the most basic shouldn't that be D instead of A sorry still a little confused I thought pH was -log of (x) so if the concentration is 10^-5 then the pH is 5 which means more basic right?? I got the previous question correct but not this one ......THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR AWESOME VIDEOS !!

For this one we were trying to find the most basic solution based on the hydroxide concentration. The larger the OH- concentration the more basic solution. So the highest OH- concentration would correspond to the most basic solution. You are right that the -log(x) converts to the p-scale, but in this case it wouldn’t be pH but pOH. The lower the pOH the more basic the solution so a pOH of 5 would be less basic than a pOH of 2 which corresponds to A the correct answer.

@@EightfoldMCAT oh my world exactly!!! I was doing p-scale instead of concentrations no wonder ....THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU ARE SERIOUSLY AMAZING MCAT TEACHER ! ....quick question have you ever done or will you be willing to do a c/p passage analysis from the AAMC FLs ?? I would definitely watch it or if you do live mcat teaching count me in!!
