Understanding Granular Synthesis (Symbolic Sound Kyma GrainCloud & SampleCloud) | Simon Hutchinson

Музыка

Explaining granular synthesis and giving demonstrations with the Kyma GrainCloud and SampleCloud sound objects.
Granular synthesis is a synthesis technique where we can assemble new sounds from very short "grains" of sound. We can do this with wavetables or longer samples, breaking them down into these short grains before reconstituting them back together in unique ways. Because we can change all of these tiny parts that make up our new sounds, there are exciting opportunities for real time control and performance.

Simon ... you could use an expander ( linked to your narration ) so that the audio examples are at equal to / or more than volume ...

That's "Kyma X Revealed" (www.symbolicsound.com/cgi-bin/bin/view/Products/KymaXRevealed). I'm not sure if it's in print anymore, but you can reach out to Symbolic Sound and ask. Those particular pages are super helpful, though, I have a permanent bookmark in that section.

Very cool tool for sound design. How can you use this in a more musical context, play musical notes with it?

Cool indeed! Just find a place in your sample that has a pitch (like a vowel sound in a voice, etc.), then you can shift those frequencies to anywhere you want!

Amon Tobin - ISAM (Full Album) Whole album is stunning, musically, whilst using this program. Some of the most creative sounds ever put to tape

I found it really hard to see an example that sounds good in kyma. Shouldn't that be the contrary?
