I remember the first time I heard Be Quiet And Drive. Literally fell in love as soon as the song finished. Still probably the most powerful feeling over a song I've ever felt.

Objectively their most cohesive and solid record. Every song a banger and legendary from start to finish. Rosemary is my fav song by them. With that said though Self Titled is my favorite record overall even if it's not thier absolute best production it just speaks to me the most. My opinion of course

I like to listen to them during the day in the right mood, but I 100% understand what you mean by night music. It's like, the lack of light helps you hear the music more. There are some songs, in general not just theirs, that you can hear and feel the absence of sound just as much as the presence. In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins is a great example as well. Something completely unlike anything Deftones does but still has that quality. But it's something Deftones has mastered. You can hear it during parts of Adrenaline and some more in Around the Fur, and then it's pervasive, in a good way, from White Pony onward.

I’m 50 years old and I remember the song “change” but I don’t remember any of their other stuff. After watching this I’m kind of confused why I didn’t listen to more. Something about their music just carries me away in a way no other band has. I know I'm not an old fan or anything but I intend to carry their music with me through the whole rest of my life.

While I still like Korn I mostly agree. Though I didn't really consider Deftones Nu Metal. They were always experimental to me. From one song to another it was something different while still being completely Deftones. So I couldn't label then Nu Metal. Also the fact most "Nu Metal" bands sounded so similar back then, made me think of Deftones as something different.

The contemporaries are the plethora of Nu-Metal bands from the time. Korn perhaps the notable exception. Limp Bizkit, Static X, P.O.D, Disturbed, Papa Roach, Il Nino, Drowning Pool amongst others. The breadth of their work never had real evolution in sound, as their got stuck in their early success formulas. The Deftones were always different in that regard, in their willingness to just go in a different direction.

Agreed, they transcended their nu metal origins and truly came out with a voice of their own, it's rare for bands to have such longevity and relevance.

Deftones is one of those rare things that when I see someone who also likes it, it makes me give them that little head nod as in "hell yeah i'm with you".

I love how some of their songs can sound so unsettling and so peaceful at the same time. Cherry Waves is a perfect example of a song that feels peaceful and haunting at the same time. It’s beautiful honestly, and only Trent Reznor and Deftones can make a song with that sort of feeling, but with a different kind of sound. Love the Deftones (and NIN), hope to see them at ACL this year with Metallica.

My auntie is a huge deftones fan so growing up I was always with her and she was always playing deftones. As I got older I realize that deftones can be used for any mood. Like sexy time, angy time, sad times, happy times, etc. They go hard and still do with their new albums. They legit have no bad songs. Maybe one you like but not enough to listen to all the time but it still bops.

Theyve been my favorite band for over 25 yrs. As a "nu metal" band they clearly have proven to be the most talented and beautiful who can keep putting new stuff out and isnt hammered to death by radio (like regular radio lol) and then laid to rest like just abt every other band in that genre. Deftones just reminds me of something, like riding around at 1 am on a hot,stale and muggy night It's the middle of summer and maybe you just got introduced to a really cute girl and she wants to meet, so you drive out to meet her...the windows are down..the air could almost choke you it's so thick but you bare it as the street lights illuminate the roads in front of you while "976-Evil" blasts through your speakers and you drive on through the night.

Around the Fur is an album that EVERYONE should listen to before they die.

Chino's voice makes me cry. This band is otherworldly. My cousin Daniel introduced me, even though I wasn't into them at the time, back in early 2000s. I will forever equate Deftones and Daniel, who passed in June 2021. He was a vet and he'd had a hard life, but he was like a brother to me. I can't hear Xerces without thinking of him. I love you brother. We'll meet again. 🖤

I still remember hearing deftones for the first time. It was late 90s, I was in 9th or 10th grade, my buddy had just bought the Around the Fur CD and from there I was hooked. That was the first CD we burned a copy of, lol. Then when the White Pony album came out, we skipped school to go get it. When I think of Deftones, I think of the good ol days.

I was in 8th grade and borrowed a bunch of cds from my buddy for a long plane flight. Put in adrenaline and listened to it and around the fur constantly the whole trip. I skipped school when White Pony came out too haha, that was the first time I ever smoked out a car... ahh the good ol days

My favorite track of theirs is Minerva. It's heavy, but has that dreamy weightless floaty-ness to it. I feel like that trait covers most of their music. Even the heavy screamy stuff has this weightlessness about it.

True. It seems like they hit the perfect balance between heavy and light atmospheres in their music. They focus more on this in their later discography though. Adrenaline was more or less "pedal to the metal".

One does not simply "understand" Deftones. Deftones is a state of being.

being a 90s kid deftones shaped a lot of my childhood, their music was a safe space for me, being a middle-class kid in India I was lucky to have found deftones on limewire and then deciding to buy white pony in a CD store (the only one in Mumbai that had it). only a few of my close friends had similar music tastes to me, Deftones was something we would listen to on our walkmen after cricket, their music helped me confide, vent, express and a lot more. I am truly grateful for Deftones!

Heve you ever hear Kurt Cobain? Chino is a copy of him man, inventor of those new styles was Kurt also singing, i loved Deftnes until i found early nirvana recordings, than they were blown away with creator of moderate rock!!! Listen to Fecal Matter demo from Kurt

"Hexagram" is a good example of Chino's vocals on that album but "Bloody Cape" really shines as his ability to both sing and scream stronger than ever.

Diamond Eyes is a masterpiece

Saturday Night Wrist is one of the most underrated albums ever. Love everything Deftones have put out but SNW is the one I go back to the most often.

R.I.P. Chi Cheng. I seriously thought he was gonna make it. Made improvements. So sad. I cried when I read the news that day 😞

I always felt there was a warmth and smothness to their sound compared with most of nu-metal bands of the time. They were all aiming to combine mellow and aggressive musical elements in their tracks, but for me, Deftones' work is magnificent in that sense. Maybe it was due to their openness to different styles and ease of navigating nu-metal tropes.

I heard someone say this before but Deftones makes music to help express the feelings you can’t verbally communicate. Their riffs, screams, both soft and loud vocals help express how you feel at a certain time. They’re not just a one type of song band, they have a wide range and variety of sounds. These sounds help us imagine and create an image of these feelings we can’t picture on our own. Deftones music helps escape from whatever you’re feeling or helping find what’s wrong. Interpret the music as you will, but this is personally how I feel about this.

Weird how the critics didn't think their self-titled album took risks. I love it because of the risks it took. Instead of doubling down on the soft stuff which made them platinum selling artists, they decided to get more rough and add even more trip-hop/electronic elements. It was almost as if they were rebelling against what they were supposed to do.

Lie Likes Music I think he's saying the self titled album that followed White Pony took risks by not following up with the same formula/direction as white pony. That they would have been expected to put out another album like white pony since it brought them to their highest point commercially at that time but instead they kinda devolved back into a harder/less commercial friendly sound. Not sure if i agree with that but thats what i got from that comment.

I’ve known about Deftones for so long but only just recently actually listened to their music… when I say I INSTANTLY fell in love, I feel like it’s an understatement. They’ve been playing constantly since.

Their music is so diverse in how and when it can be listened, you could be at the peak of your life and their music will resonate just as much as being in the pits of despair. Listening to them is to an artist interpreting a painting in multiple ways

One of the most overlooked and insanely talented bands of today, thanks for covering them!

Ohms is the best album since Diamond Eyes. They seem to release masterpieces every 10 years. White Pony - released : 2000 Diamond Eyes - released : 2010 Ohms - released : 2020 2030 they'll put out another masterpiece

it makes a lot of sense for Koi Ko Yokan to be their most well balanced record in terms of sound. Rosemary transitions from melancholy and soft despair straight into freight train demon action especially well, I love it so much also, those alternative album covers are really good

They give me nostalgia even though I started listening to them only about a year ago… they’re an anomaly, to say the least

Most definitely. I feel like I grew up with them. Adrenaline and Around the Fur had such an impact on me as a teenager, and when White Pony came out towards the end of high school. My Own Summer was one of the first songs I learned how to play on guitar. They got lumped into numetal thing, but I've always felt like they were in a league of their own. It's probably not super apparent in my pop music but they've always been a huge influence of mine.

Dark,sexy and fleeting , it's like you can't catch it in a moment.

Wow. As a musician from Sacramento that is heavily influenced by Deftones, this made me feel a lot closer to their body of work. Thank you for this video.

Discovered them summer of 2020 and instantly fell in love. First song I heard was Be Quiet and Drive. There is this feeling Deftones radiates unlike any other band, makes you drive in the sunset or just go stargazing on a hot summer night. Somehow their music combines chaos and pain with soothing and calming vibes. Been listening to them ever since and personally believe they have never made a poor record.

Digital Bath is my all time favorite. It's one of those songs that makes me stop doing what I'm doing and stay still, close my eyes and just listen and admire it again and again untill the day of my death

No matter how much I love black metal and gazillion other genres, I will always regard Deftones as one of my top 10 bands. Their discography is near perfect!

@@franlovelsimic8421 Devin Townsend, Enslaved, Opeth, and Ihsahn you got the masters of extreme progressive metal there. Loved Emperor but Ihsahn solo stuff is defiently thinking man's black metal.

Despite my absolute love for White Pony, I think Koi No Yokan is the best thing they ever did. Its like they took everything that was great in their previous works and blend it into perfect "Deftones" sound. Agressive, groovy, dreamy and beautiful combo of metal and shoegaze with something special here and there. Good video, subbed.

This comment absolutely nails it. No album like it before or after. For myself, I remember the album coming and thinking I'm so excited about this, but this is not the time in my life for this album... and waiting till the following summer to really embrace this album, go for long runs and drives and boat rides. This album changed my life for the better, and as musicians and humans, that the greatest compliment one could give. Rip Chi, deftones for life.

Koi No Yokan is my favorite album from them. I don't know what they tried to do with it, but each song for some reason reminds me of a different 70's or 80's song. For example, Graphic Nature, the very first time I heard it, Maneater by Hall & Oates popped into my head. With Rosemary it was The Chauffeur by Duran Duran. Entombed reminded me of some Rush songs and would be at home among all the power ballads throughout the 80's.

I'm glad to see so many other people that give KNY the praise it deserves. How would you rate their albums? Here's my list: 1 Diamond Eyes 2 White Pony 3 Koi No Yokan 4 Saturday Night Wrist 5 Deftones 6 Around The Fur 7 Adrenaline 8 Gore

Deftones is seriously one of those bands that are purely unique and a band that seriously cannot make a bad album. Every album just sounds thought out to a degree and you can tell nothing was just thrown together to make it sound like a song. It just makes sense.

This video was made before Ohms, a great album that feels familiar to their roots in some aspects but was completely new in other aspects, just a wonderful album. It's crazy how the band felt and sounded just as good as they did when they started out. Gold from 1995 to 2020. Every. Single. Album.

This band definitely changed my life, they are unlike anything I have ever listened to. They are simply amazing, godly, something that bores in your soul forever. Thank you for this video

i was born in 2006 but i’ve been listening to them since before i could walk my mom was a single mom in her late 20s who, before me, would constantly mosh and party she loved deftones so it was always on in the background haha so i’ve heard every one of their songs but their first 3 albums were my childhood and are my favorite things to listen to to remind me of my mom. She passed away 4 years ago. she saw them preform around the fur and it was her favorite album. she was a great woman with great music taste

Change (In the house of Flies) is probably one of the coolest alternative metal song of the decade.. it simple gives me bliss in everyway listening to it all the time 18 years down..

Xerces is my favorite Deftones song. It's pure perfection.

Discovered them at 16 …. Life changing

Deftones never cease to give me chills. There's almost an ASMR quality to Chino on some tracks 😆 often contrasted with wild wailing. Love it!

This band is incredible. Not one bad album.

It takes a while to get used to, that's for sure, but it grows on you. I think the vocals are too low, which I find odd. Phantom Bride is a fantastic track.

SNW was meh at first, but now its equal to their best. Gore will mature in time, like all deftones albums do.

Lie Likes Music crosses and palms were ok but Deftones and Teamsleep hit me harder..although I've seen Crosses live and have a prestige hoodie in my closet along with my dead stock Team Sleep concert shirt.

I just discovered deftones this year and some songs have already been my favorite

The similarity that they hold with Radiohead is in how absolutely interesting they've kept everything so far without skipping much of a beat since the beginning. Edit: I was also thinking of another similarity: The dream-like aesthetic to their sound.

90s 00s and the 10s have never made a bad album and maybe 1 or 2 bad songs out of 8 albums

I will forever keep this band in my heart I love them so much

Deftones it's my fav band since I had 13 and still until this day , I always listen to their songs and it's nostalgia plus the fact that I feel this it's the best music in the world makes me feel so good.

Asking if Deftones deserve to be compared to Radiohead is a slap in the face to Deftones. Deftones is one of the most well respected bands of our generation.

Dont hate on radiohead though. Deftones are my favorite band but the comparison is far from an insult. Radiohead is widley known as one of the most experimental bands of all time and they are quite good at what they do.

it's rather an analogy, than comparison. you get triggered because you see names of two bands, though it's not better/worse, just different, don't understand the frenzy.

I fell in love with White Pony at the age of 14. Damn, almost 20 years ago. Never got to see them live, but I just picked up tickets for their tour this summer and I'm super pumped! Every album they put out is gold, and they will forever be on the same pedestal as TOOL for me. In fact, if it wasnt for Passenger I'm not sure when I would have been introduced to Maynard.

Don't lie, I love the deftones but they are terrible live about 90 percent of the time. They put out amazing albums where they can manipulate Chino's voice, but live is a fun time as well as very anticlimactic concerning vocals. It's rough. Has been since like 2003. His voice was gone already back then.

Greatest band of all time in my opinion. And still standing the test of time.

Before watching this, I have to say, Deftones is one of the few artists that I genuinely love all their albums. Not to be hipster fanboy or contrary douche, or to make myself out to be a "real" fan. It's just the honest truth. Every album has tracks that end up on my all time favorites Deftones tracks. I certainly have my preferences of their albums and songs, but each one has a special place for me. Some took time to grow, and ripened with age in my head. Koi Yo Nokan wasnt one of my favorites, but now it's pretty much a top 3 for me. Again not to be the contrarian douche, but White Pony is probably my least listened too album from them. And its one of the most amazing albums ever made. Deftones new music often takes time to settle in, and as I listen to it, certain elements become visible, and then my mind will open up, and I'm left amazed at how the song had to creep into my psyche. Rather than immediately hearing a song and be "omg amazing" of "bleah boring". Most of Deftones music took time and grew as I listened. I mean when I first heard them back in the mid nineties, I honestly wasn't very into them. But one day, I saw the My Own Summer video, and it clicked. I got both albums they had up to that point, and their music continued to grow. Every album started like that. Maybe 2 or 3 tracks would be my immediate favorite on the first listening, but as the years would go on, every other track began to take shape at different times, for different reasons, and became a fucking masterpiece for me. So now each album and Id say about 95% of their songs can easily be put in my favorite track list.

No worries man. You do come off as a true fan. Otherwise you wouldn't spend so much time writing this. Deftones is one of my favorite bands as well. But honestly there are albums they've made that i just don't appreciate that much. There's always songs from all their albums that click with me, but there's some albums that i can always listen to all the way through and others i can't. My top 3 list for them would be #1 Diamond Eyes #2 Koi No Yokan #3 Around The Fur. Thanks for watching dude! It means a lot.

Greatest band of all time. Their lyrics and sounds are completely original and sound like no other band on Earth. Love these guys!

There is no true understanding Deftones other than our mere mortal interpretation. They really tapped into something ethereal and otherworldly with a lot of their music. After almost being alive 30 years at the witing of this, I still find myself returning to their first 3 albums so much. Been listening to Koi No Yokan a lot as of late and exploring other relatively newer releases.

Diamond eyes was the first Deftones song i heard. *Really* love it. I looked up their older stuff and was so shocked to hear how different it is 😂. So far, Diamond Eyes and Tempest are my 2 favorite songs from them.

Saw Deftones and Dillinger Escape Plan in Charlotte NC in 2012ish at the amphitheatre behind The Filmore.. Great venue and one of the BEST SHOWS EVER! Chino and Dimitri started singing Passenger then it started raining and then a tornado warning came out so everyone ran off stage and security made the crowd pile into the Fillmore. CHINO*PASSENGER*RAIN FALLING#NO WORDS CAN DESCRIBE THE EXPERIENCE!!

Saturday Night Wrist was my first and still my favorite to this day. Sensual, sexy and absurdly atmospheric. LOVE IT A LOT

im 12 year-old, 2022. listening deftones it always feels so different

I like gore bc I can go to the beach and listen loudly with out putting a bad vibe around other beach goers ......its a rock metal sound splashed with sun and miami beach vibes that allows me to rock but not bum out the beach scene

Hell yeah, Deftones is one of the only bands out there that never gets old (no matter how many fucking times you listen to their songs).

Their self titled album is my favorite and it seems to be underrated. It's kind of what In Utero was in contrast to Nevermind(White Pony) by Nirvana, less catchy songs but heavier and darker

Missed to mention "Lovers" is a b-side on the single Hexagram. Amazing song which I wish would have made the album.

deftones wide range of sound really sets them apart from other artists, the way their songs can go from heavy to light, rosemary is a good example

Been a fan since Adrenaline and my favorite album is by far Koi No Yokan. The most varied, the most melodic, and the most confident record they've ever made imo.

Diamond Eyes was so amazing. Blows me away to this day.

I remember being 7 years old or something and Minerva was on NHL2004 . I just kept playing that song over and over . Flash to myself being 23 years old I looked up the song again and just fell into a hole of all Deftones music. I love them so much

Deftones has got to be in my top 3 favorite bands. Hearing all of this new (to me) information about their albums and what was going on is so cool! I already knew about Chi dying, that still hits hard though…such a young guy, with so much left to offer.
