I thought it was just me with this problem LOL! I always saw everyone looking thorough binoculars making it look very simple/easy but I always had an issue with my eyelids getting in the way anytime I picked up binoculars (which was not very often so I never really cared enough to solve this issue). Now that I am looking to buy some I decided to finally figure it out and your video really helped a lot. Thanks!

good explanation of vignetting with the crescent shadow. However in my experience I don't get that happen when my eyes are too close. I only experienced it in one pair of binoculars I own, and I have owned many brands/sizes, with the pair they had the twist out eye cups and I had too slightly turn them just a bit to reduce the vignetting effect. At first I thought the binoculars were defective, but once I realized to twist the cups they work fine.

Great video! I tested the Steiner 8x56 Nighthuntes a few days ago and had the shadows ("kidney beans") all the time. Unfortunately there ist no option to adjust the eyepieces, so the binoculars are essentially not usable for me. The Steiner Ranger Xtreme 10x42 are perfect on the other hand.

How does it work with the wide angle binoculars? Is eye relief wider, or is it just impression caused by wider field of view?

My eyeglasses are medium towards strong with their correction, I’m fairly close to as far as I can go with my diopter. But while I can still adjust with my diopter I would rather do that and use my bins without my spectacles. This is partly because my glasses are varifocals, partly because I have several different pairs but also another layer of glass takes away from the clarity as it’s another layer that needs to be clean and unseated.

No kidding! Is it possible for you to be able to do it without glasses or are contacts an option for you?

This is why you have to try different binoculars before you buy one. Furthermore you have to consider the field of view, the edge to edge sharpness, the ergonomics, weight, low light performance, warranty and the case/protection of the glass. My advice would be, don’t buy a bino under 500 euro’s, but look for a Nikon Monarch M7 or HG, Vortex Viper HD, Kite optics Lynx HD+, that’s the minimum class to look for. You don’t buy binoculars too often and you can have them for a lifetime. So it’s worth the extra money.

I found a New Old Stock of Winchester WL-1050WR for Canadian $40 (US$32/£25) which came in its original packaging including a Steel Box, A Nylon Pouch and all the straps. I couldn't find any details of Winchester Binoculars online - I know that they are a now defunct Ammunition company from USA famous for their rifles and also made rifle scopes. The box and the documentation state "Winchester is a registered trademark of Olin Corporation. Winchester Optics are distributed in North America by Vanguard (USA) Inc.” I know Vanguard makes some pretty decent mid range sub $250 binos. What are your thoughts about this purchase of $40 Canadian? Here are some specs: Porro Prism (Ofcourse from the looks ) 10x50 Eye relief: 11mm Exit Pupil: 5mm Angle of view: 6.7 degrees Field of view: 351 feet at 1000 yards Weight: 1.87 Ibs

I recall back in the 80s me and some of the boys were out at the old train trestle (Purple Head) for some weapons familiarization and proficiency.. We had an array of weapons amongst us and yes.......plenty of ammo. Flounder presented to the group a silhouette scoped Classic BF pistol which was chambered in 30-30 I believe. Sean, former Army, boasted he qualified with every weapon in NATOs arsenal while in Germany (West). Flounder smiling loaded the pistol and handed it to the NATO expert. Sean failed to utilize proper eye relief with his eye practically touching the rear scope, etc. Well he fired the rifle pistol round and the obvious recoil blackened his eye and we all had a good laugh then and many days to come to say the least.
