I have a pair of binoculars that were the last Christmas gift my mother gave me, I lost her in 2019. But it is as I am staying at home due to Covid 19 and really enjoying the birds in my yard that I am motivated to really put the binoculars to use. I have made all of these mistakes and look forward to learning how to best see with the binoculars. Thanks!

I had a friend who would adjust my Zeiss binoculars IPD so that he saw two overlapping circles when viewing a subject. I asked him why he was doing that when you correctly need a single large circle to have them properly adjusted. He told me he has seen many movies where the audience is viewing through a binocular and they show the double over lapping circles. I am afraid many people are under the wrong advice when looking through binoculars with incorrect IPD adjustment. BBR, you may want to add that to your instructions

Just a tip for beginners who are getting some hand-me-downs or buying used. Try also using a pair of binoculars known for good brightness. I had no clue about this as a casual beginner with old Tasco prism binoculars built probably in the late 1960s. Then I was on a birding trip and tried someone else's bins. Oh, my God! The difference was huge. The images were so much brighter. I had not realize you could lose a substantial amount of the light due to the glass. Apparently, in the 1930s Zeiss added a coating that increased transmission by 50%. Now, additional improvements are not as dramatic, but the lens coatings on old bins can wear off and cheap new bins (including cheapo toy minis with plastic lens) won't even have good lens coatings that optimize light transmission. When I tried those modern bins, I realized I had been looking at things in darkness. When a subject is already in the shadows or the sky is gray, even losing a few percent of the light can make the difference between your brain perceiving something or not. I had previously not known you could lose ten percent of your light through bins. I thought it all went through. Until you try the top-of-the-line binoculars, you won't know what quality you are using. I have no intention of buying top-of-the-line, but at least I learn what I could be missing and gauge my purchase decisions accordingly.

Wonderful, wonderful. I thought my binoculars were broken, faulty, or the lens covers were flapping over the lens, so I kept squinting through them to try to get a decent view (never managed it!). I was going to get rid and buy a monocular. The first piece of advice was to unscrew the eye cups. Problem solved. Thanks so much, I thought I had wasted £200!

One day I just randomly walked into a wildlife-store and bought a pair of Vortex Diamondback 8x42 binoculars. Why? Well, honestly I have absolutely no idea what was going on inside my head! 😂 I've never had an interest in binoculars before - or had any particular reasons to buy a pair. But, for some reason... I did. And it was one of the best purchases I've ever made! I ALWAYS carry them in my backpack wherever I go - and wow, who knew that something as common as a simple little leaf could be so fascinating?! 😁

Hi! Would you recommend 8x42 vs 10x42. I’m also looking into Vortex Diamondback HD. But I also saw the Vortex Crossfire 8x42. Is the price difference worth it? Thank you!

It's amazing how few beginners do not realize that their binoculars, especially those with roof prisms, can be dual use. Not only do binoculars bring distant objects closer to the viewer, but also they can make close objects appear farther away. All you need to do is reverse the binoculars so the objective lens is close to your eye. Amazing!

Jason, I appreciate all your reviews, additional information about binocular qualities, features, optics quality evaluation, and proper use, thank you. I would also add, check the binoculars for proper collimation (the axis of both barrels should be aimed at the same distant point). Probably not often a problem with new binoculars made by higher quality manufacturers, but one never knows for certain. Or collimation might be off in a high quality used binocular made by any of the higher quality manufacturers. A few months ago I purchased my first 8x42 binocular, an impulse purchase while vacationing on the coast. Branded with the name of a large marine supply store chain. Model Shoreline 8x42. The image seemed good, bright & clear, and it also has a short close focus of about 4.5ft. But after returning home, where instead of mostly looking at the surf line or fishing boats at sea or shore birds. I was more often viewing buildings. Where I noticed if looking at a horizontal roof line, as the binoculars were moved a few inches away from my eyes, the roof line image was lower in the right side than on the left. Or if looking at a distant lamp post. The lamp post image remained vertical in the left ocular, but moved downward and tilted to the right several degrees in the right side ocular. It's a kind of fault not easily noticed looking at natural landscape, but it does strain one's eye sight with much viewing time. After some persuading, the company replaced them with new ones that are correctly collimated. The primary good thing to come out of purchasing that first $180 8x42 binocular was I discovered how useful that size roof prism binocular can be, that ended up sending me off on a quest to discover why, one 8x42 cost ~$200, but another one might cost $2,500. And wonder why people are willing to pay it. What in the world can someone see through a $2,000 + binocular that they can not see with a $200 binocular? In a quest to understand the quality differences I've ordered, tested, returned or kept several binos from different price ranges. Among binoculars kept are: Kowa BD II XD 6.5x32, Hawke ED X 8x42 (from your recommendation), Vortex Razor XD 10x42, Calela's Instinct Euro HD 8x32 (which is an HD version of Meopta Meostar B1.1, that has a pretty darn good image. Impressive enough I later ordered the 10x32 model, too), and (thanks to Swarovski's post NL Pure introduction, discount of prices of their other models) an EL 8x32. I've concluded at my age, 65+, with its decreased eye pupil dilation ability, and likely most viewing won't be early morning or late evening -- an x32 binocular will probably be the better choice for 95% of my viewing. I figured the best way to gain an understanding of the differences in quality is to use, over an extended period of time, binoculars from a woe spectrum of price ranges. With use under different light conditions, I am starting to understand, see, and appreciate the differences in quality of binoculars from $200 to $2,000 price ranges. Doubling the price seems to gain a small increase in optics quality, and a larger increase in ergonomic refinement.

I have a pair of Gerber Montego 8X25/6.0 I can't seem to get a single clear image with no vignetting and no doubling of the image.. Say I look at an overhead power line: I will see two images of the line: one above the other but parallel to each other-- offset basically .. the only time I don't is if I open up or close down the gap between the two optics /eye pieces to the point that one or other eye is seeing just black-- i.e then I am only seeing with one eye. What am I doing wrong or are my binos faulty?

The third piece of advice is so useful!!

Great video I recently bought hawke frontier EDX 8x42. I am facing one issue I am seeing lot of reflexes circular in shape in the periphery but also reaching Center Both during day time and night I am a glass wearer and I see the reflexes both with and without it. Rest everything is fine. Is it normal?

Hi Mohit. I assume by reflexes, you mean reflections? If so, no this is not normal. Check that you have you set the level of eye-relief correctly (www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/glossary-binoculars.php#binoculars_eye_relief) when you have your glasses on and off, also if your IPD setting (www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/blog/interpupillary-distance-binoculars-06/) is not correct this can also be the cause.

I don't understand why I can only adjust to see out of one eye. I can close one eye and adjust to see image but opening the other it is blurry.

Solved at aiming

Luckily (or perhaps unluckily) my glasses mainly correct my astigmatism so I really don’t need to adjust the diopter or the eye cups. Knowing what they do is useful for handing my binoculars to someone else, however. Great video! I just got into binoculars after owning many sorts of rifle scopes, spotting scopes, and camera lenses. Your videos have been useful, thanks! Currently only own two binos, a Nikon Prostaff 3S 10x42 (that has been around the world many times already) and a Vortex Vanquish 8x26 that I use for my carry around hiking binos. I plan on picking up a nicer pair, probably Vortex Viper HD or Nikon Monarch 7 in 8x flavor because I’ve finally picked up bird watching as well. It’s funny because I own several thousand dollars worth of Viper HD optics (20x85 spotting scope and long range MOA rifle scopes) but I never saw the need to have a really good pair of binos.

If you are experiencing pain, it is either because the focus is not correct, the lighting is poor (including not enough light gets through the lenses), or your bins are not properly aligned and at the right distance from your face. First, if you have glasses on, make sure both cups are screwed in or pushed in to align with the lens edge. If you don't have glasses, try unscrewing or pulling out the eye cups. When you look through, you should not see black rings around the image. If you do, adjust the eye cup distance. Please note: if you normally use glasses, you do NOT have to use them with binoculars! You simply don't! The binoculars are like a new adjustable pair of glasses that also make things closer. Most people prefer to keep glasses on because they can't see switch between looking at their subject without binoculars (just to find it) and looking with binoculars. Some people might also have very bad vision and the binoculars might not be adjustable enough to compensate for their vision problem. If your diopters are below 2, you could probably even stop using your glasses if you like. I prefer to keep them on or wear contact lenses. Second, work on setting the eye alignment. Pull apart or squeeze together both barrels (using the hinge movement) until the binoculars are the same distance apart as your eye center (the pupil). When you look through both barrels, you should feel no eye strain from lining up both images as a single image. Note that your brain can mildly correct for misalignment, so feel free to move the barrels apart and together and see how the view changes. Select the view that is most comfortable. (Each time you adjust something, you might affect the other. So, repeat the first step, then the second! ) Third, get the focus set properly. Look through both barrels and adjust the focus until the image has maximum sharpness. Relax your eyes, don't squint or force your focus. Whatever feels the most comfort, leave it at that setting. You might not have perfect focus at this stage. That is OK, because getting the best focus requires multiple steps. (Each time you adjust something, you might affect the other. So, repeat the first step, then the second, then the third.) Fourth, your eyes might not have equal focus ability. Adjust the diopter setting on one of the barrels. That is the dial near the eyepiece on just one of the barrels. There is only one diopter ring. The other barrel will not have one. Move the diopter ring until you have the best focus. My diopter adjustment ring is on my right barrel. So, I first close my right eye and set the main focus knob using only my left eye/left barrel. Then, I open my right eye and close my left eye, and I adjust *only* the diopter ring. Then I open both eyes, adjust the focus a little bit, then adjust the diopter a little bit. I have found it is necessary to relax when doing this. You can try too hard to focus and succeed in getting a clear with the wrong setting. Then you will get a headache later. Just relax, find the focus and diopter settings that give you a sharp view when you are relaxed. Repeat the first step, then the second, then the third, then the fourth. I only had you repeat those steps because you sound unfamiliar with adjusting all of these things together. In the future, you can figure out for yourself what you need to keep adjusting until you get the focus set properly. Once you have the focus set properly, you still might have to adjust the focus later on, especially if the lighting conditions change or if your eyes get more tired.

I'm beginner, I was confused to buy Binoculars. Kindly suggest which should I go for from the below options. 10X50 Binoculars or 20X50 Binoculars for long distance?

Hi, for purely long distance use in reasonably good light, the 20X50 would probably be the right choice, but to get the best out of them you will need to mount them onto something steady like a tripod. For a more versatile instrument that will perform better in low light and can be used from the hands, the 10x50 would be the choice, have a wider view, but show less detail at distance. Add the single large circle especially as you show the false figure of eight view when showing the two eyes being in focus. The sound on your video has a large echo to it I think you need a better acoustic setup. But good video overall.

Buying binoculars that are so powerful that you can't hold them still enough to view your subject. Like a pair of Celestial binoculars and trying to watch a foot ball game with them. If the pair of Bionoculars your thinking of buying has a mounting hole to a tripod adaptor you better let the sales person know if your planning on using them hand held. Don''t be afraid to ask if you can take them outside before you buy them. I have found that smaller is better but trying to get my girlfriend to agree well I had to show her the value in that.

Yes, I often find this to be the no.1 case as well - I go over it in often my Binocular Buyer and User Guides www.bestbinocularsreviews.com/guides/ - I am just surprised it is not highlighted more in the instructions when you buy a set of binoculars!

What about people with a lazy eye.If I close my right eye I can not see anything through the left lens.Is there a cure for this? Or am I not going to be able to use them?

Hi Dave, I am no eye doctor or specialist in this area, but I assume if you cannot see anything through one eye, then I would say that binoculars will not work for you and you would be just as well of using a monocular? Hi, thanks for the question - Do you know the amount of eye-relief you binoculars have? It should be written in their specifications somewhere? If very low, there is not much you can do and all i could think of suggesting is getting another pair that has a long eye-relief.

@@Bestbinocularsreviews the eye relief is 17.2 mm. I am using Nikon Action EX Extreme 10 by 50. I guess it’s not my eyelashes but more of image black out during bright daylight. I didn’t face this problem at night.

@@maitrayeeghosh7672 17mm+ is good, so that should not be the problem, and the exit pupil of 5mm from a 10x50 is also good. So I am not sure what to say - have you had this problem with other binoculars?

I keep getting nauseous when I use my Celestron G2 upclose 10×50. What could be the exact reason?

Hi, I would suggest one of two reasons: Either the binocular has gone out of collimation which can happen after a knock or something like that or have you made sure that you are calibrating the binocular correctly for your particular vision using the diopter? The biggest problem with beginners - by FAR - is that they have no interest in listening to how to use binoculars. Many, I suspect, don't even see themselves as beginners. How could there be *any* skill involved in just looking through two tubes, right? I wonder if one must first hide the binoculars, then tell the user they will not get to touch them or even glance at them, unless the user can describe the basics of how to use them. I swear, from smart to dumb, it seems most beginners assume they only need to know about either the focus or the hinge (not even both, apparently)! Thinking that's all they need, they just won't pay attention. I have tried explaining with a big smile, with seriousness, with simple-and-short words, with more words, even demonstrating. It doesn't matter. Optimal binocular usage gets very little respect, and yet it is so important to satisfaction and so easy to learn (for those willing).

hahah yes, I have found the Amazon comments and reviews section is a pretty bad place to go for good advice.

Try using your binoculars while riding in a vehicle, looking in the direction of travel, as a passenger of course, it is like being on a ride at an amusement park.

Why do you only show roof style? I think those are the least interesting type but you also show very unknown brands to me here in California

My biggest mistake was not buying Swarovski's FIRST. They truly have the BEST glass and if you're serious about this you'll eventually get some. Do yourself a favor and "buy once cry once" For reference I own some Kowa 10x42's and some Swarovski 8x25 and the difference in the clarity is nothing less than spectacular. YMMV but this has been my experience! ✊🏿

Most people simply can't afford them. Period. The cost requires too much sacrifice in other areas. It is good you have lots of money or no other needs. Others are not in that position to take your advice.

people who do not take the time or find out how to adjust binoculars should even buy them. also do not lend your binoculars to anyone. they will probably screw them up and you will have to adjust them again. you might not even get them back.i do not lend anything i own to anybody, even people i know. let them buy what they want to borrow.

This is very silly. The assumption of the presenter is that it takes a special set of skills to operate a pair of binoculars. I have never run across a person unfamiliar with binoculars who has been unable to resolve these challenging technical problems in less than two minutes--without help.

"Make you feel nauseous". It is "nauseated" not "nauseous" If you are "nauseous" then you make others "nauseated". Sorry... this is a linguistic bugbear of mine...
