Neil Nie demonstrates how artificial intelligence--and particularly, object recognition--works... and how it will effect the future.
Neil Nie is a computer science student at Deerfield Academy. He started programming when he was 13 and has developed many applications for iPhones and Macs. Neil currently has several apps on the App Store and is researching neural networks and machine learning.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

The problem with visual interpretation or anything else we train an AI system to do is that we have built-in biases that we do not even realize that we have. It is necessary to get around such biases and REALLY try to understand how an AI system that KNOWS NOTHING WHATSOEVER WHEN IT STARTS UP will interpret whatever we use to train it. It is not that it will not do what we want it to do if we train it properly, we have to MAKE SURE that it DOES NOTHING ELSE!!! It is that last that is going to make or break our relationship with AI of a general-purpose human or higher type. There are lots of good Sci-Fi novels/short stories/movies/TV shows about how this was not done correctly and the results were "less than satisfactory" (as in THE TERMINATOR or HORIZON ZERO DAWN or FORBIDDEN PLANET. to name just a very few). The trouble is that if we get it wrong the first attempt, we may not have time to fix it before very bad things happen...

So how about if we set and let AI trains (we help) for million of million of years? We can tell AI to behave like biological intelligence, that is if the you (AI) get bad outputs, retry, until you (AI) get good outputs and proceed based on those good outputs. Evolution has to be smart like this, right?

My 'natural intelligence' tells me that AI will be used as a weapon. Further, as currently seen in the workings of free market societies, one can expect a natural (and unavoidable) progression of AI development wherein economies of scale create a few extremely powerful entities that tower above all others. Similarly as in the animal kingdom, where humans see themselves as vastly superior to lower ranking animals, I expect the most powerful AI entities of the future to treat the less powerful with impunity. Of course, you and I ARE the 'less powerful'. These are very disturbing thoughts.

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:21 🧠 AI's origins: The first computer was invented during World War II, and Alan Turing raised the question "Can machines think?" in 1950, inspiring the exploration of creating intelligent computers. 01:00 🔍 AI's presence in daily life: AI is already impacting our lives, from Google search and Siri's natural language processing to complex tasks like stock market prediction and language translation using Google Translate's neural network. 03:26 💻 Google Translate's power: Google's 15 exabytes of data (equivalent to 30 million personal computers) fuel the learning process of Google Translate, enabling it to improve accuracy by reading more articles. 04:07 📊 Machine learning process: The learning algorithm powers computers to learn and be intelligent by using training input to gain knowledge, which aids decision-making and improves performance on specific tasks. 05:18 📷 Image processing: Computer vision involves processing visual information similarly to human vision, using features like area, parameter, and skeleton to identify objects in images. 08:18 🔢 Neural networks: Inspired by biological neurons, artificial neurons process input data (X) through mathematical calculations (f(X)) to produce output (Y), allowing computers to learn from their own knowledge without relying on lookup tables. 11:05 🚗 AI's impact: AI applications extend to self-driving cars (using image processing to identify objects and create 3D models) and industries like fishing (identifying different fish species). 13:15 🏆 AI milestones: While brute force calculation led to the defeat of a chess world champion, AlphaGo's victory in Go showcased the power of reinforcement learning and neural networks for decision-making and intuition. 15:14 🚀 Future with AI: AI's transformative potential includes constructing space stations on Mars, autonomous driving, fair stock trading, disease cures through DNA analysis, and empowering humanity's future through enhanced AI capabilities. Decent talk and i believe there would be a follow up session too on this since there is so much left to be discussed.. Calculations does not equal intelligence.. true.. then there is this whole another level of thinking/morality as well.. we cannot calculate as fast as a calculator can.. but we can distinguish easily between 2 animals or object forms (whereas a computer struggles big time) and that is not calculations but an example of intelligence among other things.. then there is the question of psychologically segregating humans based upon the GOOD and the BAD.. the morality kicks in here.. AGI once it comes in will be way better then humans in terms of intelligence so will learn faster and better then us and crack solutions to problems that we have been struggling for ages (mutation vaccines.. pollution lets say etc).. but will it have morality?.. i dont even know how to define the thought process behind morality so not sure it AGI would be.. but then it doesnt really need morality to be constructive or destructive for humans.. it might do so simply because it is programmed to do a specific and as a side effect might just destroy us.. am really looking forward to a follow up session on this..
