Understanding Allyship: Identifying yourself as a problem & changing | Tim Marks | TEDxBrayfordPool

How might you convince people to consider the need to recognise failures and then act to effect change? A way to start might be to understand that you are part of the problem. A white middle-class man is embedded in environments that harboured racism for decades and was certain he was doing all he could as an anti-racist: A triggering high-profile case, Azeem Rafiq, highlighted the certainty which was holding him back from being able to help in the ways he always wanted to. Tim Marks talks about how self-introspection can be the start of potentially effecting positive changes in other people.
Tim Marks spent over 25 years in elite sports environments; playing, coaching and development, and eventually media and communications. Tim played for or worked with Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club, Sussex County Cricket Club, England Cricket and England Rugby. He has managed award-winning participation and engagement projects notably with South Asian communities and specifically with refugees from the Afghanistan conflict. Since leaving sport Tim worked in parliamentary communications and local democracy before joining the University of Lincoln in 2019. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
