Underfloor Heating - My House Build Pt:17

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

House update video! Turn on the CC for captions. This episode will cover the floor insulation, underfloor heating and dry screed. I started with hydro insulation, a bitumen primer and then the bitumen sheating. After bitumen, we installed the thermal insulation with heating pipes on top of it. Everything was covered in dry screed as the final step. Much more details in video subtitles.

Old School plumbers are 100% correct! I had 3 attempts at getting my bathroom radiator to stop leaking with PTFE as I didn't have any hemp to hand. After rummaging in the shed I found hemp string on a sack of potatoes and applied that and it worked a treat!!!!🤓

Indeed, hemp combined with modern synthetic thread sealant works like a charm. Very useful when dealing with non-conical thread metal fittings, different materials and poorly manufactured fittings with loose tolerances.

Indeed, have pro's for dry screeding your floor, noth worth the hassle and the mistakes you can make for the price they offer you. Very well done, and you being a carpenter I suppose you come up with a solution to get the whole distributor with air vents in a nice cabinet.

I wasn't too sure about the design of the building but i have to say now that it's actually built i love the whole thing, its definitely taking shape . Also i take it that the whole process of what you are doing is to make sure you're new home is carbon neutral and with that as cheap as possible to heat etc 🤔. At first when I watched you pouring the bitumen on the floor i actually thought you might have gone mad but then realised that the intention was to seal the whole floor from any moisture coming up from below causing a damp problem. Great idea and honestly I wouldn't even have thought of it. Especially when we are more likely to see that product put on the roof of a shed or outbuilding. I recon it took alot of foreign people by surprise seeing you doing that 😅. As alway's guy's 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.

Yes it always surprises me when I read how the things are done in the other parts of the world. The plan is to use as little energy as possible and what I can see during this winter, things are better than expected. When days are sunny, I can work in short sleeves all day and night with outside temperatures going to -5°c or lower. South oriented glass wall was a bingo. This bitumen water barrier is a standard here and probably was for more than 50 years, I know my grandfather did the same thing but they had to melt it in a bucket on site and it was a very dangerous process. Now it's safer to apply it but the solvents will knock you out..XD Thank you very much for following Simon!

  • @lignumchannel

    @lignumchannel

    4 ай бұрын

To prevent any capillary moisture from rising. I insulated the outside of the foundations as best as I could but there is still a chance for some water to climb from the bottom of the foundations, that's why there is a hydro insulating barrier between all the walls and the slab, and also now between the slab and all the layers that come on top of it.

nicely done. differently in details: for example in my house they added fibre to the screed instead of the rebar, and the water pipes were stapled to the insulation. Question: Why no hydro insulation under the stairs, so there might be water vapor coming up. I thought the water barrier must be one piece. Cheers

If you watch closely you can see that there is a gray layer underneath the bricks. I'm sorry but that scene was shot with a cellphone cos I forgot my camera that day so quality is not the greatest.. Anyway, that is sika polymer cement hydro insulation coating. The bitumen sheets are connected with that coating so there is no break in the barrier. I will insulate the area underneath the staircase later on with bitumen and also drainage waterproof foil. This area will be indoor garden and the soil will be flush with surrounding flooring.

Can you not get concrete trucks to bring the concrete? Also, how long has the house taken? Are you done with it already and releasing videos delayed? Love it as always!

This is pretty dry mix, concrete would be too wet to finish it that easily. Pretty common in EU to do sand-cement floors

This is a mix that has very little water and needs specialized mixer like this one in a video. It is usually done this way here. The house is ready for technical inspection at this moment but I have so much work that I'm forced to edit with a little bit of delay.. But being ready for inspection doesn't make it completely finished though, so more videos are yet to be filmed..

For a channel that prides itself on beautiful wood projects, it’s a shame your own house is so unenviromental! Loads of concrete, plastics and oil-based products; a missed opportunity to show off what could be made from your glulam wood.

Unfortunately invasion of Ukraine and jump in glulam prices of more than 150% forced me to change the building structure to more classical (affordable) method. Original design was glulam and visible concrete so I share your opinion. In my defense, I tried to insulate the house to bring the future energy consumption down to a minimum.

I'm sure someone has asked this before, but are all of these techniques part of the building code for that area or more of a "I can do this, so I will"? This build has been a pleasure to watch, such inspiring craftsmanship 🤌

This is a classic building technique in this area and most houses are built similarly but some things I wanted to do better. I wanted a few things extra during the build like insulating the foundations, a bit extra insulation in the roof, better bricks with better thermal and seismic properties etc.. Thank you very much for watching!:)

@@lignumchannel Thanks for the reply! It's such a stark contrast to how we build homes in the southern hemisphere. We could definitely adopt some of these techniques to increase longevity. I've shared this series with my wife who is a building surveyor, and I hope she enjoys it as much as I do! Thanks again :)
