Summary of the rest of the episode: - Detectives got the murderers girlfriend to wear a wire to record his confession (now the title makes sense). - The confession stated (graphic and heartbreaking, sorry) how he tried to choke her but she was a fighter! So then he put her in the tub and hit her with a baseball bat that cracked her skull. But just to make sure (his words) he decapitated her. - He did this all on the weekend his girlfriend was out of town. - Detectives found her DNA on the bat, on his floor, and mattress - He said he disposed of the body in 3 separate trash bags (he can be seen buying these and cleaning supplies on Walmart camera on same day) and then put in trash outside his house. - The remains are most likely never to be found because the landfill has already been filled. - The family said they will never have peace not knowing where her body lays. - On the tape he also confessed to killing 12 other people, but there is no evidence of this, and detectives believe that he said this out of fantasy. - Before the murder, the murderer visited online forums about abduction. - He also visited the university counseling center months before saying how he had thoughts of killing people, and that he would even know how to get away with it. The counselors flagged him, and tried to get him to come to another session. The Zhang family is suing the center because they do not believe they did enough that could have prevented this murder. - He was sentenced to life in prison. Family was upset that he did not get death penalty. - Yingying was set to marry her fiancé in October of that year RIP Yingying, may her family have peace

Now if he seen her and kept driving, then yeah, he should be drowning in guilt. But on the other hand the guy would've found another victim. He mentioned that he killed 12 other people so at least his crime spree ended.

Before he killed Yingying he told a school counselor that he had thoughts of killing people and even bought supplies to do so. They tried to have him meet with them again and he didn’t come so they let it go. Yet they’re claiming they “did all they could” It’s absolutely disgusting and they deserve to be held accountable for not stopping him.

This story makes me so sad. Yingying seemed like an amazing young woman who beat so many odds coming from a poor small town and some evil person had to take her away from this world. How can justice ever be served for something so cruel? :( RIP Yingying.

I watched the whole documentary, In the very end they showed a diary of Yingying, most of it written in Chinese, but the last sentence was in English, saying, Life is too short to be ordinary. RIP RIP RIP

His girlfriend recorded his confession. He strangled yingying and she resisted, so he hit her in the head with a baseball bat and decapitated her. Never gave location of remains. How can such evil exist

Illy Kano yes, the killer was married, but it was an open marriage, where he had a girlfriend as well. This girlfriend is the one who recorded his confession. Also about 18 months after the murder, the killer claimed he put the remains of YingYing in 3 separate garbage bags and put them in a dumpster; these bags was taken to a landfill, so it’d be next to impossible to find the remains 18 months after the murder. Also, since the killer has lied to the FBI before, they are kind of skeptic about where he claims the remains are. It’s so unfortunate and cruel what the killer did 😞😞. Rest In Peace YingYing and I pray her loved ones can find peace, one day.

It is devastating to see where she came from such a small town in China, her mother didn't have reading and writing skills and she ends up in a prestigious university in China and then the US. Her parents being such small simple people have to be devastated everyday their baby is gone.

Anyone else get the creeps looking at this dude? I've met so many people that look like him and you never think an ordinary looking guy like this who went to your school is going to do such a thing.

As a Chinese student, I have to say that I feel deeply sorry for my alumni, a girl who is so talented and kind. Normally we chinese kids are educated not to get in a stranger's vehicle. And an intelligent person like Yingying must have known this. But I guess she was really desperate at the time searching for a solution, and later some news coverage said that the suspect might have met her before so she had an impression of the suspect. Since he was not a total stranger for her, she let her guard down a little. So girls, once again, don't get in the car with strangers or any men when you are alone (unless they are your families) , not even with a guy friend that you trust. You don't know when some of them will turn into a devil.

Some people just have no sympathy for other humans. You try to comprehend his actions, she's a girl he doesn't even know, why do that to her ? she's innocent and vulnerable, why ? but there's no answer to these questions, some people are just evil minded and mentally insane. There's going to be people like that and they're gonna look normal and you'll think theyre just normal, but deep down they're not normal.

Her story reminded me of myself when I was 26 yo and just came to the US. One day after my class, while I was alone waiting for a bus at the bus stop around 8 pm, a truck stopped in front of me. The driver invited me to get in his truck. The only difference I did was I said "No" and walk away. I just keep hoping that they found her and she's safe. It can happend to anyone. Just don't trust people easily!!

He was cool calm and collected just like a psychopath/sociopath would behave.

If there are fifty, then each one is responsible for an average of three murders per year. Serial killers are always present in society. Murica is dangerous. I live in India, I haven't even heard of this news even though it has gone international, but some how a crime occurs in India, they begin to tag how bad India is. Atleast in India you won't find professors killing students.

They also need to take George off the ending of every damn video!

Its amazing to me how you can kill a human and when confronted get scared. You were big and bad when you took her life!

I went to Jr high with his wife Michelle Zortman. I remember her being tough, smart and having a very good heart. She had a small circle and not a lot of friends but i was able to get to know her for a couple of years before i moved because we rode the same school bus and had the same friends. Unfortunately she likes the smart guys who are kinda dark...and her kindness was wasted on this dirtbag. Hope she can overcome this.

I watched the whole episodes on ABC website. This is so heartbreaking, especially that I could understand most of what Yingying's family said, because I'm Chinese as well. Rest in peace Yingying, hope you will be back home someday 😢

Does anyone else find the title “Undercover Girlfriend” a huge disrespect towards Ying Ying and her family? Why is the attention put towards the undercover girlfriend and not on her death and her family? Where is her name? What about the many other titles that could of been used and makes more sense/spreads more awareness? I understand that the girlfriend helped closed the case big time, but I still find it to be very disrespectful.

I think the girlfriend did not agree to the title. She probably refused to be interviewed out of respect for the family and was likely not asked for her consent in this being broadcast. So I find it both disrespectful to the victim and her family as well as to the girlfriend. American commercial news can be dirty and disrespectful to people for views.

When they tell him we see everything and we saw you.. His reaction is priceless..

How is his wife supposed to be his girlfriend??? If there was an ending to this video I wouldn't be left so confused!! 🤬

He took her to his apartment where he held her against her will. He then choked, raped, stabbed then cut her up into pieces and then put her body into three different plastic bags inside a dumpster. 3 days later, the contents were taken to a landfill where they were buried 30 feet into the ground with other garbage. hes serving life in prison. so so sad

Even though this is such a sad story, I can’t help but feel a bit hopeful because there was another girl standing up to help when no one else can. The girlfriend was in seriously danger for wearing wires and spending time with her murder boyfriend! And she was so brave for doing so. May YingYing Rest In Peace 🙏. And may Terra live a long and beautiful life❤️

You will always find that these killers are the biggest cowards who ever lived. Proper mummy’s little boy. This kind of killer should always face the most exacting punishment. If imprisoned, then it must be forever. This kind of creep will kill at the first opportunity, no matter how many years down the line. If this perp pulled this stunt a short time ago in our history, he would have been dragged through the streets and beaten by every towns person. It would have been a good idea to send this perp to the toughest Chinese prison, just to see how long he lasts. And I’m a liberally minded person.
