Under The Spanish Sun: The Iberia Fleet In 2023

Ойын-сауық

A member of the European airline conglomerate known as IAG - or International Airlines Group - Spanish carrier Iberia has over 80 aircraft in its mainline fleet with more on the way. Established back in 1927, the airline will soon be 100 years old and primarily connects Europe with North America and South America. Today, we examine the carrier’s fleet as it stands in 2023.

As a Spaniard, I feel really excited about having watched this video. At the beginning of it, I was scared that you wouldn't mention Iberia Express' and Iberia Regional's fleets, as they double Iberia Group's size by adding as twice as many jets to the company. You even mentioned Level! I've never really gotten to understand why they created that brand, even if they've also operated flights which didn't depart nor arrive in Madrid or Barcelona, such as the Bilbao-Vienna route, among others I probably don't know. When it comes to Iberia's mainline fleet, I wish they had ordered Airbus' A350-1000, as it would be their biggest possible aircraft unless they switched to Boeing's 777-9. But yes, if stayed attached to Airbus, they would've had the biggest aircraft they could have. Having been given the option to rise my feet away from the floor, I would've loved Iberia to have both the 747 and A380, at least a few of them, like Air France, Lufthansa and British Airways did. Anyway, even if I have a bit of a love-hate relationship towards the A350 because it's Airbus' largest plane but a twin-engine rather than a 4-engine plane, I'm happy that Iberia put it in their fleet, as it's both Airbus' and Iberia's flagship. Another fact I'm happy about is that they've increased the quantity of A350s to be incorporated to their fleet. I had read up on some rumours regarding a hypothetical addition of extra A350s, but certain and official information was just so difficult to find even if it's supposed to be great news. Just think about it, they had 14 A340s, then they decided to switch to 16 A350s, which is, even if slight, an increase. After, they go on and order 4 more aircraft to Airbus and, later on, even bring 2 more from Hainan. So I don't really know why this information is so hard to find. And yes, I've just checked Planespotters.net and seen those 6 A350s, very glad to have seen them. I wonder how everything will look like if Iberia ends up buying Air Europa's 100%. They've theoretically done it as they've already signed, but competence authorities are yet to permit the purchase or not, and it's said the process could last for longer than a year. Air Europa is supposed to stay with their livery, at least for the beginning. It's intented to bring us more flights to Asia, a point where Iberia has never been strong, even almost unexistent. In some way, I have kind of mixed feelings, as I want Iberia to be a big airline (it's great already, at least regarding its fleet size and aircraft) as it's Spain's flag carrier and what represents us wherever they fly, but I also want to have livery and aircraft diversity. So, to sum up, I'm really glad you uploaded this video and I've really liked it. It's also really funny that you've titled the video “Under The Spanish Sun”☀️. Thanks for uploading it!

Boeing fan but have to say that the A340 -600 as a cargo plane is a terrific idea. Never flown IB but I remember seeing their DC 8s and DC 10s at SJU back in my childhood days in the early 1970s.

my first trip to Europe was with Iberia back in 2010 or so Miami to Mardrid and then a short hop to barcelona. we flew on an A340 and an A320/21 I was on tour with mycollege choir around some of the amazing cities of Spain. We Sang in 6 cities in 6 days . The people of Spain were absolutely lovely, The Flights with Iberia We incredible, if I ever travel to Europe again Iberia will be my first choice!

Loving these fleet overviews. This one especially since I’m a Spaniard. Nice seeing you mention the smaller, more regionally-oriented branches Iberia Express and Air Nostrum. Would love to see some Boeing aircraft in the fleet though. The B787 and B777 would be perfect to expand their market to new routes. And personally, I’ve always liked the look and feel of Boeing aircraft better than Airbus’, but man, I must say that those new A350s are on a league of their own, effeciency-wise and range-wise. Can’t wait to get on board one of those. Edit: I’m seeing Iberia is expected to acquire Air Europa and their Boeing aircraft including the B787 sometime this year, perhaps the next. So excited to see how that turns out!

I flew Iberia 2 times in the same day. The first leg was from GRX to MAD on the crj1000. Legroom was bad but it was a small plane so I wasn't surprised. I then went on to fly to Dublin from Madrid on the a320 eco. Alright legroom and the flight attendants were fabulous so It was a very nice experience but only really if you are connecting from a regional Spanish flight.

You flew with Air Nostrum from GRX to MAD (CRJ 1000). 🙂Air Nostrum is operating most parts of the Iberia Regional Branch under Iberia Flight Numbers (a small part of it is operated by Mel Air with ATR 72-600) and Air Nostrum´s Aircrafts are painted in the Iberia-Livery, but Air Nostrum isn´t part of Iberia or even the IAG - it´s a seperate Airline and only a Franchise Partner of Iberia, operating a fleet of CRJ 1000, CRJ 200 and ATR 72-600 (and it´s a Sister Airline of the Irish Cityjet, who operates a fleet of CRJ 900). Iberia hasn´t any CRJ in their fleet - as in the Video mentioned their smallest Aircraft Model is the A 319-100.

I got an Air Nostrum flight from Madrid to Frankfurt that also had Iberia tail and signage-which as explained her should be an Express routes (its possible it had the Express name and was simply operated by Air Nostrum). Also getting Iberia back to MAD from NCE was weird because I'm just not used to an airport with a single route from an airline since PHL is a major hub for American (and USAirways before that) and that is the only Iberia route to/from NCE (and had to get there like 3-4hrs early because of the bus schedule-at least security was smooth and it only took 15mins to check and get to the gate-at least their was a cafe on the landside

  • @tae_mx

I think the A350 is the most impressive jet I've flown on. The MEX-MAD route is much nicer as a passenger on the A350. When operating into and out of MEX their A340s seemed to take the entire length of the runway and it was disconcerting to say the least. Specially as they actually had a couple of instances of runway excursion on their A340 at other airports. I always hated flying on the A340-300... The small engines didn't give me any sense of confidence. I think Iberia always had better business class seats than Aeromexico, but Aeromexico has a better economy class cabin (and Mexicana did so too), having flown on the A343, A346, A359, B767, B777, and B787 on the MEX-MAD route I must say that the A350 was by far the best.

I looked up Aer Lingus' Shannon to Boston route on the flight radar app today and it's a 3 year old A321XLR that's currently used in the route. IAG seems to be a predominantly Airbus customer.
