I love how Damien always looks 40% passionate and 60% pissed off.

Probably annoyed and not trying to fuck up his job, trying to be a top director is a top job

Rohmer was the strongest influence then Pialat and Renoir.

People talk about Rohmer, and perhaps visually yes, but in terms of dialogue and pacing I think Pialat has more of an impact.

Chazelle has directed a Psychological drama,a romantic musical and a Biopic. I wonder what will be his next project. An erotic Thriller? A horror Film? He is as diversive as Alan Parker

Two romantic musicals. The genre isn't important. All his movies have ambition and love in its core. Those are his themes.

Or Stanley Kubrick ;) I think Chazelle should do sci-fi or crime movie now.

There are a lot of directors at the moment with more diverse filmography than Chazelle: Ben Wheatley, David Gordon Green, etc. I mean I like him a lot, but his "diversity" isn't that unique.

Directors do better work when they don't obsess about verisimilitude. Good directors make their own realness & authenticity.

His films are SO unrelated to Pialat and lack the elements he is speaking of. good taste in movies, though

In some scenes of La la land is the essence of Pialat, in the sense that everything happens strangely.

It’s cool that he appreciates Pialat, but he has absolutely nothing interesting to say here. Kind of embarrassing to watch
