Under the hood: Special access to the British Army's advanced Ajax

Built to offer enhanced lethality, survivability, reliability, mobility and all-weather intelligence, the Ajax land vehicle system has been designed to be at the heart of the British Army's future armoured fleet.
The £5.5bn initiative has faced a considerable amount of challenges and scrutiny, but the new vehicle has been in action on Salisbury Plain, with the Household Cavalry being one of the first to get its hands on the new vehicle.
Troop commander Lieutenant James Bird gives Forces News a unique close-up look around the vehicle.

Probably can be retrofitted depending on what sort of threat you consider defending against. Russians already have jamming pods pointing straight up on the roof of some of the tanks so if you hover directly over such a tank you might lose connection. Those ones will most likely be added to every future armored vehicle adversary or british. Fpvs are hard to beat as human pilots will probably aim at any weakness. known

Having (mis)spent most of the eighties developing instruments to measure and analyse sound, I'm glad to see military equipment _finally_ recognising the possibilities of the acoustic spectrum for passive warning and even identification/location/tracking of threats. Up to now, this sort of thing was only of military interest if it worked underwater! Let's just say that duplicating, in 2010 and for a hydrophone, what I'd done in 1989 for microphones on handheld instruments, arousing no MoD or MI5 interest whatsoever, was suddenly classified!

Detection of drones will be crucial for vehicles and other valuable devices. Acoustic signal detection would be good since it's passive. Every drone has probably a specific acoustic signature, and there will be some seconds for countermeasures.

Better late than never... It seems like a good platform overall. Even though the gun has proven effective in trials, it still looks a bit of a 'pea shooter' to me, compared to the actual size of the vehicle. However, I know looks can be deceiving sometimes, so only time will tell if it's: Ajax the Great or Ajax the Lesser... Let's hope it proves itself with good, tactical awareness to assist in the field, with the ability to dash from midfielder to striker, occasionally ⚽️ Atb Gus 👍

I don't know why you call the 40mm a pea shooter since its four times the firepower of the 30mm they replaced. And 30mm more then doubles the firepower compare to the 25mm which is the current cannon use by the majority of western IFV. The cannon looks small by comparison to the vehicle because its uses telescopic case ammo and its the first and only one of its kind.

The ajax Ares can carry about 6 to 8 soldiers so I guess it could be an AFV. I think I would possible prefer the ares as an ifv troop carrier but with an APS on top instead of cannon for better troop protection . It has 50 cal and 7.62 so still bad news at close range.

Why are european nations so anxious to develop individually their own weapon systems? It may be a fraction better, but becomes a weakness if nations have to cooperate, resulting in logistical nightmare. Everyboddy knows, yet it is ignored. Why? The military is there to defend and protect. It is not meant to satisfy ego's.

Because if a country does not possess a miltary industrial complex they get shafted. The Canadian army doesn't get full access to its tanks, the Germans put limitations on what you can use or resell them too, and the Americans are extremely preditorial with their military industrial complex. I'm not crictisising either country defence is extremely important to a countries sovereignty but I am explaining why European countries are obsessed about this. Anyway it's ironic I'd support cv90 anyway it's actually owned by BAE

Furthermore, I'd say your model has to work both ways. Britain makes meteor before the us, the us years and years later adopts aim 260. Britain develops brimestone America decades later develops the inferior JAGM.Then forces the uk to buy it for their apache by refusing to let brimestone be integrated. So this bilaterialism has to work both ways.

developing and building military kit is not an overnight job. if you rely on another country for your hardware that gives them a huge amount of control over you. they can easily pull support leaving you utterly boned. building your own stuff also gives you the option to export it to other countries making you a lot of money and giving you the fore mentioned control. none of that is to say integration isnt an important factor worth thinking about but so is self reliance.

So if the built-in megaphone fails to disperse angry citizens I suppose that's when the stabilized 40mm chain-gun comes in handy? There is a mismatch between those 2 bits of kit. Almost seems like it was designed to be used in Gaza. Just being slightly critical because you can't use this for domestic policing, you're just asking for trouble if you use this against civilians.
