In this powerful and insightful KZread video, Dr. Gabor Maté delves into the complex nature of trauma and its profound impact on individuals. Drawing from his extensive experience and expertise in the field of psychology, Dr. Maté explores the deep-rooted wounds caused by traumatic experiences, both overt and developmental.
With compassion and clarity, he explains how trauma is not merely about what happens to us externally, but rather the internal wounds that it leaves behind. Through personal anecdotes and scientific evidence, Dr. Maté emphasizes the importance of addressing trauma at its core, rather than merely treating its behavioral manifestations.
From discussing the physiological effects of trauma on the brain to the intergenerational transmission of trauma, this video offers invaluable insights into the multifaceted nature of healing. Dr. Maté advocates for a holistic approach to trauma recovery, one that acknowledges the interplay between biological, psychological, and environmental factors.
Join Dr. Gabor Maté on a journey of understanding, empathy, and healing as he shines a light on the transformative power of trauma-informed care.

“Being cut off from our own natural self-compassion is one of the greatest impairments we can suffer. Along with our ability to feel our own pain go our best hopes for healing, dignity and love. What seems nonadapative and self-harming in the present was, at some point in our lives, an adaptation to help us endure what we then had to go through. If people are addicted to self-soothing behaviours, it's only because in their formative years they did not receive the soothing they needed. Such understanding helps delete toxic self-judgment on the past and supports responsibility for the now. Hence the need for compassionate self-inquiry.” - Gabor Maté, in "In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts: Close Encounters with Addiction". This man deserves a Nobel Prize for his work.

I don’t think so. His writing doesn’t reflect his clear thinking. Childhood traumas are used by most therapists. We get traumatized every other day because we live in an ugly world, which is actually a prison. He doesn’t suggest a remedy from regular traumatic attacks.

Bill w. Quit drinking as a result of psychedellic therapy in the 1950's before tim leary and the hippes ruined it. The scientists and dr.s were making great advances in mental health and addiction, with psychedellic therapy. Then the government made the medicine illegal because of the hippies. True facts. So glad they are finally doing the research again.

Although I've never had to battle substance addictions, I have had shame for most of my life and incredible rage and terror. I read a book called healing the shame that binds you but it also incorporates the 12 steps but in regards to shame. It was so amazing and transformational. Ye guys are inspiring for the decision ye take to stay sober ❤

He's right about they don't address trauma in 12-step. You can talk about it but it's difficult to process it unless it's a resentment.

I was once stuck for decades. It was definitely my identity, and it the trauma stunted my growth. Now that I'm no longer stuck, I'm trying to figure out what I like, who I am, and my purpose without that.

"And even in the 12-step programs, they rarely deal with the trauma", says it all. Sad but true. 12-step groups too often just become the repetitive worship of books written by the "founders" 84 and 70 yrs. ago, and avoid dealing with/working through the emotional sources of shame/guilt/self-loathing that trauma generates in a child automatically. We live in a traumatizing society and with multiple generations of unwitting trauma survivors. Gabor's breakthrough work is a blessing to recovering addicts/alcoholics. Thank you, both!

This is one of the channels that gave me the courage to start my KZread channel 11 months ago about self development. Now I have 2,036 subs and > 2k hours of watch time. I know it’s not comparable with others but I’m still proud I started because I’ve been learning so many lessons that I could haven’t learned without getting started in the 1st place.

In my early home, there was both violence & neglect, mostly violence, so I have carried a lot of fear, anxiety, ANGER & mostly SELF CONTEMPT. Self esteem work hahelped a lot BUT the early damaging conditioning just goes on & on, so I often have to use the self-help tools I learned in 12 step Recovery. I'm 85, so I don't expect to become completely Recovered but things are getting better all the time & I expect to reach my end as a happy guy. Nonduality is showing me things that Recovery work never could have so I feel lucky to have found both 12 stp. Recovery & now NONDUALITY. Good luck everyone.....🥰

That’s so true the trauma is never dealt with that’s where compassion comes in and when it does when it’s authentic that is it touches the patient in a way that it’s never been treated with before. Called kindness/respect. Some people carry a tone in their voice that can draw out the trauma and bring it to its knees.

ACOA was the only Recovery program that ALLOWED me to honestly examine my own parents to see exactly how & why they damaged me with their very bad, inadequate parenting. The other 12 step groups maintained an attitude of ignoring, excusing or COVERING UP the behaviors of parents & parenting. Alice Miller helped me finally see & understand where my parents & their parents WENT WRONG. It was & still is a blessing to finally KNOW why I turned out so BAD & now, how to correct my parents mistakes. It might take the rest of my life, but I intend to eventually UNDO the mental/emotional damages my parents left me with.

The 12-Step process did transform though when it compassionately began to learn that relapse is a part of recovery - not a disease - not a failure - but a part of a living and transformative ; fluid process . I dare to say that every human could use a trauma informed therapist off and on throughout their lives …

Child in the womb experiences everything the mother does. When i was in the womb, my father was rarely present, when he was, i know he got drunk and beat up my mom at least once. Once is enough to an unborn infant, to cause "trauma" to happen in the child. My dads absence is probably why I don't feel safe in the world. Always on the look out for danger. Feel like no one has my back. Etc. I wish to learn more from Dr. Mate. He makes more sense to me about things, and my own conditions , than anyone i have tried to understand.
