We had two Hollenbeck officers bring a pipe bomb into the watch commander’s office and the sgt. went into vapor lock when he saw it. I was working the desk and when I heard “everybody evacuate” I was over the desk and out the door. Bomb squad later told us that if it had gone off it would’ve leveled the station. Both officers were told that if they didn’t get a conviction of the suspects they were going to take some serious days off. Naturally we had a good time laughing at them once the dust settled.
