Uncharted ARCTIC CANYONS Expedition (E5) - 11 Day Solo Wilderness Camping & Packrafting

Ойын-сауық

An 11 day, solo, Arctic Packrafting and Hiking Expedition in Tuktut Nogait National Park, over 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, to paddle the dormant white water Hornaday Canyons from Uyarsivik Lake to the Arctic Ocean. This is the least visited National Park in North America, one of the most remote and isolated. In 2023, a single visitor permit was issued, and I was lucky enough to be the recipient. I worked and researched for over 2 years to put this trip together. I would traverse, chart, and paddle the Hornaday River through the Canyons, publish a map with the details needed for others to follow and visit this beautiful section of river. This section of river was first attempted in 1977 by Larry Osgood and team. They were successful in paddling a good portion of the canyons, portaging out of the canyons when needed. In July of 1999, the Beaudry Team, comprised of professional kayakers, became the first and only full descent of the Hornaday Canyons. No one has attempted it since.
For the Hornaday Canyon Map, Gear List, River History and relevant info for planning your trip to Tuktut Nogait and paddling the canyons: suluk46.com/arctic-canyons
Episode 5 is the last episode in the series. It covers the last 3 days of the expedition, where I exit the final portion of the canyon and spend a few days paddling the calmer water to the Arctic OCean. It is over these last days where the wildlife becomes very abundant. We see Caribou, Grizzly Bear, and a Wolf on our last day. I spend a night in the D.F.O. camp before hiking 20 km back to Paulatuk and officially finish the trip.
I would like to personally thank the people of Paulatuk for their extremely warm hospitality towards me. I was welcomed with open arms and cannot even begin to express how lovely everyone was. The Inuvialuit are a kind and caring community and I hope to go back and visit my friends again in the future.
FOR THOSE LOOKING TO PADDLE THE CANYONS:
Parks Canada will LIKELY not endorse your trip, since rescue capacity is very limited in Tuktut Nogait National Park due to it’s remote location, and an uncomplicated rescue could take up to 4 days. The park has no high angle rescue capacity in the North, so extraction from high walled canyons would require up to a week for a certified rescue team to arrive. Should you decide to continue with your trip plan, Parks Canada MAY advise you to obtain private rescue insurance, come fully prepared for self-rescue and emergencies, such as cold water submersion, hypothermia, and bear encounters. Be sure to carry equipment for a cold weather climate and extreme winds, first aid, and emergency beacon or satellite radio.

Thanks! I couldn't believe I bounced back so fast as well. It took some work but was worth it. I'm in the same boat as you, once I bought a packraft, it totally opened up new routes that I thought would be impossible...

An epic journey! Lucky? I would say so with the difficulties you faced before the trip but all went well and the trip turned out to be a spectacular one! The culture camp sounded absolutely wonderful. It must have been such a positive experience to spend time there, very cool. I love that you dedicated the trip to your Mom. Thanks for sharing this wonderful adventure. :) :)

I'm happy you enjoyed the series. It was fun to make, that's for sure. The culture camp was amazing, I filmed a bunch of it but after a few hours it just didn't seem like the effort to capture was worth sacrificing any of the experience, so I just enjoyed it. Instead, I made some very good friends. Yep, this one goes out to my mom :)

Bit lost for words mate, you did extremely well at taking us on the adventure with you. Your risk assessment, the journey to get there, the narration all make the series thoroughly enjoyable. Some of the best packrafting on youtube! For context, I live in Victoria Australia, I watched the first 2 episodes, then did a local class 2 run with my brothers and my 4 year old son, all on packrafts. Then came back to finish the series. Very motivating. Thanks for sharing

Coincidentally, my family is on their way to Australia right now, should be landing in Sydney in a few hours...long haul from up here. Sounds like a great family outing playing in some fun waves. Be safe out there, and one day I will make my way down to visit your beautiful country.

Congrats on completing this amazing adventure! We enjoyed this series, the scenery was awesome, the river looked like a lot of fun and I can't believe how tough a little inflatable raft can be. The caribou water crossing from an earlier episode was some national geographic kind of stuff, really cool. We use a couple cheaper go-pro knockoffs but we carry a cheap Canon 1080p handheld that has a decent optical zoom when we do shorter trips for the 'beauty' shots, it'll get you the cool craters on the moon shots and stuff like that. It's small and light enough we would take it all the time but it's pre USB charging. You don't get the amazing 4k 60fps quality but its much better than a digitally zoomed cellphone. You could get a similar quality zoom to the phone footage in editing with the go pro footage sometimes.

Thanks so much. I had a blast out there. I've been using those packrafts for a few years and still can't believe how tough they are. I'll have to do some research on cameras, I do use the digital zoom option on the gopro and the phone but you lose quality so fast, sounds like a separate camera is the key. Enjoy the new year and best wishes to you and all.
