Unboxing: What makes Beijing's air cleaner?

In 2013, China's nationwide PM2.5 concentrations averaged 72 micrograms (μg) per cubic meter, and in Beijing, it was sometimes even worse. However, by 2022, the average PM2.5 concentrations had dropped to 29 micrograms (μg) per cubic meter. From 2013 to 2022, China's PM2.5 concentrations had dropped by 57 percent, and the number of polluted days had fallen by 92 percent. What has happened during the past decade, especially policy-wise? In this episode of Unboxing China, CGTN's Liu Xiaoxian will unbox the story. #beijing #airquality

    Not really. China has been planting trees for more than half a century. It has no effect on the air quality in Beijing. What made the difference is the stopping of coal plants in the Beijing area.

    This improvement is terrific. Air pollution has gotten terrible in Dallas/ Fort Worth, Texas. Every day, if the temperature rises above 85 degrees fahrenheit, DFW falls under an ozone action alert level orange to level red. ( Level red does not come up much. Our government does not want to admit the severity of this problem.)

    I still remember like yesterday, Beijing was mocked in GTA 5 game's radio station in 2014. But within a decade, a massive improvement. This is a government that takes criticisms and actually works on improvising. But the so called democracies will have a never ending problem. Like Delhi is only getting worse than what it was a decade ago.

    It makes sense. A developing country is primarily concerned with getting their people out of poverty, even if they have to use cheap polluting fuels like coal without any particle scrubbers. Once people get wealthy though, they start to desire things like cleaner air and better energy sources. China has gotten incredibly wealthy, especially since 2008, so it's no surprise that the government in the capitol city responded to that higher status by enacting stricter pollution controls.

    China's experience with poor air quality as it vigorously pursued industrial development was very much similar to that of the UK in the late 19th century AND in the USA in the greater part of the 20th century. If I remember correctly, the word smog originated in the UK, combining the words smoke and fog. In the 70's, the Los Angeles County area had periodic air quality alert days, when the nearby San Gabriel mountains were barely visible from a short distance. But the air quality in the UK and the USA has vastly improved, though there are still periodic violations of standards, especially during episodes of weather conducive to ozone and PM2.5 formation. So, congratulations to China for its improved air quality WHICH was achieved in record time. Bravo!🤓

    Liu Xiaoxian failed to recognize the significant contribution of reforestation in north-west China. Reforestation holds down the soil against water and wind erosion. Before the massive reforestation of NW China, the strong winter wind would carry the fine sand and soil particle eastward toward Beijing. The combination of coal combustion particles and the fine soil particles in the air would blanket Beijing when the wind stagnates around Beijing. Due to massive and aggressive reforestation in NW China, the eastward wind carries much less fine soil particles into Beijing.

    減少耕地面積是正確方向, 土地被反覆耕种和施肥是沙漠化的主要原因之一.如果我們能讓沙漠變濕,被水侵泡,那麼風就無法吹起它並移動它,從而完全根除沙塵暴問題。我們能否使用管道分別從巴基斯坦和海參崴日夜不停一年 365 天抽取 海水並輸送到沙漠地區。讓韓國和日本分擔費用我們三個國家共同努力,因為沙塵暴也流向了這兩個國家。

    現階段, 問題已轉成蒙古, 沒有它參與解決不到核心; 海水不淡化+沙漠蒸發量大, 同樣是支出大於回報; 要找巴基斯坦(巴基斯坦自己都不夠淡水, 就算未來淡化的回報優於成本也是先惠及自己國家), 不如自己大力發展和優化滴灌技術, 最大效率使用淡水資源; 要找俄合作不如取貝加爾湖水而不是海參崴, 用海參崴的水不如直接從渤海淡化 日韓不可能分擔費用, 支出大於回報;

    To prove that China’s reduction of SO2 aerosol emissions by 70% was causing heat waves in the Pacific Ocean and the Arctic, scientists used the CMIP6 models, - models which mimic the reduction in aerosols from China. By running the models, they found that there was strong warming in the Northeast Pacific Ocean, starting about 2007. To begin with, falling air pollution in China increased warming near the coast of Asia. This heat amplified a high pressure system along the Pacific Ocean’s western edge. This high pressure system in turn amplified a neighboring low pressure system in the middle of the Pacific Ocean via atmospheric Rossby Waves from the rotation of the planet. A low pressure patch (Aleutian Low) off the coast of Alaska responded in turn by expanding southward with strength, thereby weakening the summer westerlies normally veering to the northwest and bringing in cooler Arctic or subarctic air. This weakening of the summer westerlies in turn prevented the summer westerlies from cooling the ocean surface. And this set the stage for a heat wave.

    China has made massive steps in curtailing coal consumption, however the statistics she gave are bit misleading. The coal use simply is less concentrated, the amount of coal China uses hasn't gone down, the growth has just stagnated. The next big thing would be to get coal consumption down in the whole country, but that will take some time. Regardless, great progress!

    The target is to improve air quality while minimalise the impact on the economy. For the last few years, the govt just cheese through by maintaining energy supply but improved filtration, afforestation even in the desert area, developing green technologies, monitoring the air quality and so on. 60% improvement in air quality over a decade is acceptable, but more need to be done.

  • Жыл бұрын

    @@JuraganEmas The overall emissions from China's coal use hasn't gone down but slightly up. The coal plants have been removed from being immediately near some cities and that has greatly improved their air quality. That's big improvement but in terms of ecology, it isn't that much. China itself is estimating that peak coal will happen in year 2030 in China. Thus any meaningful impact(downwards) on overall emissions will be after that. The reason is, like you said, economy. They need time to switch to alternative methods but they are still, as of now, dependent on coal.

    Not exactly true despite the US starting several decades earlier... CNN - About 1 in 4 people in the United States - more than 119 million residents - live with air pollution that can hurt their health and shorten their lives, according to a new report from the American Lung Association. People of color are disproportionately affected, as are residents of Western cities. Since President Richard Nixon signed the Clean Air Act in 1970, emissions of outdoor air pollutants have fallen 78%, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency. But Wednesday’s 2023 State of the Air report, which focuses on ozone and particle pollution, shows that millions put their health on the line every time they step outside.
