Unboxing - TOS Lighting Kit Updated and Improved.

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is an unboxing of the new and improved lighting kit being put out by Polar Lights. This is the lighting kit for the 32 inch long original series Enterprise. It has over 90 LEDS, circuit boards to provide flashing nav lights, and motors for the nacelle domes.
Specific points of difference between the old and new kits:
- Updated instruction sheet that goes into greater detail step by step and shows areas that can be dry fit to allow access for service if someone runs into a problem after finishing the model.
- New style of LED strip connectors. Besides being more robust and easier to tell how to insert the LED strips, they can be repaired fairly easily if someone would happen to have a wire break from the connector.
- Smaller square LED bulbs for the hangar bay.
- More robust circuit boards with stronger solders.
- Now includes an on/off switch that gets incorporated into the base.
- There are a few small tweaks to simplify it wherever we could''.

As someone who is currently working on a 350 Enterprise with the old lighting kit, I do like the fact that you get better connectors for the LED strips, a switch for the kit, and the better instructions with diagrams of the wires. The old kit does have the power adaptor, something that surprised me when I opened it first as I presumed it would be battery operated. EDIT: My lighting kit did have a problem. When I checked it at first, the motors worked but none of the lights did. Turns out that something had been wired wrong in the kit. I needed to reverse the main power wires so that the red wire from the kit was joined to the black wire from the power supply, and the black kit wire was joined to the red power wire. Once I had done that, all the lights came on. When I checked against TV footage, my motors had originally been turning backwards.

If the lights had worked the first time that would have been a cool effect.

On top of that if you don't want to use the strips PL provides you can change them out for the ones with the color ranges you want to use.

I really hope they update the K’tinga light kit. The main issie I have is that the forward and aft photon torpedo bays are always “on.” Would be nice to have activation switches to make them pulse on and off. Don’t want to buy an expensive aftermarket lighting kit that requires soldering.

The original did come with a power supply it did not have a switch the soliderless connections where terrible they often would make contact then the circut would come apart loosing a large chain i ended up soildering my connection even without the shuttle bay the rear of the ship barely fit a great deal of work with a dremel tool was needed and the bassard lighting was a great idea bur only one of mine flashed roung 2 sent me 4 diffrent boards none of them lasted and eventually the one that worked quit on me the motors where loud but are still working and the lights that are on at all times continued to work i love my model but i did a very good job on it i wish this lighting kit was available 12 years ago

@@nathanstenabaugh1290 I heard a rumor that they were going to do just that but never did. And building this thing right now I can understand why, its sadly not really engineered for it. So little room to put standard 2 mm LEDs.

@@PunkyWily true but I’ve developed a bit of hand shake that make simpler kits like the new polar light 350 kit ideal. It’s not ideal to pay 8 times more to get something into Canada that also requires a lot of soldering and even more kit modifications. And cobbling something together from scratch isn’t usually ideal for similar reasons.

You don't lay the LED strip down before closing the connector. You slide it in under the two tiny tabs.

Yeah it's kinda baffling to me why they didn't just use strip lights for much of the interior lighting instead of the dozens of LEDs with fat wires that you had to jam into the model.

I owned the Master Replicas Studio Scale Enterprise and absolutely loved it for the short time it worked. The impeller fans inside the nacelles stopped spinning first, then the sequenced lights went out. At that point, I sold it. I have the PL 350 and the old lighting kit but now that I see that they've improved the lighting kit, I'm glad I haven't had time to build it. Looking forward to watching your progress. I'm especially interested to see if they, indeed, sequenced the nacelle lights, as they flash in a very specific order on the original filming model, which MR replicated using colored LEDs, not the "Christmas lights" the new lighting kit supplies... which is (obviously) more accurate to the original.

Are the motors in the nacelles any quieter than the previous version? It amazed me how loud the previous motors were. I think the tube of the nacelle amplified the sound.

This and the dimness of the port and starboard red/green flashers were my biggest issues with the original kit as well. You can barely see them unless you’re in a dark room. The power switch is a nice touch, and I like that the addressed the shuttle bay lighting issues, but I’m really curious about the motor sound and flashers as well.

Only issues I have had with this light kit so far, is the connectors for the little led strip pieces are garbage. They either don't connect fully or fluctuate... Ending up just soldering them all together after cutting the connectors off. Got tired of having to reopen the saucer to adjust the things only to have them do it again and again :/ That aside so far just sad the bridge lighting is yellow rather than white.

Great videos !!! I'm doing research on 1/350 Enterprise kits available. Can you tell me if the lighting kit can be used on other PL versions of the Enterprise ? Ex. Pilot or refit ? Or are there other light kits like this one by polar lights that are available for the other versions ? Thank you !! Again , great videos !!!

I'm skeptical of any motors being in the nacelles after building the DiscoPrise and having my LEDs burn out from the heat generated by the motors. I left mine on after putting it together, only to find my lights were toast. Killed the lights in the collectors beside the motors and also killed the first light in the blue warp grill because it got hot too. After breaking it apart, I found the motors had gotten hot enough to distort the plastic piece that connects the clear fan piece to the front of the motor. I contacted PL and they graciously resolved the issues for me. But basically the kit was done for. So be advised of motors anywhere close to LEDs that can't be ventilated to cooler air. I would rather be able to enjoy the lights for an extended time then have to enjoy it for a brief time and have to turn it off to prevent damage.

Good to know, thanks. I only ended up using the motors from that kit, with the rest being my own lighting. But I still only run them for maybe a minute at a time as it makes me nervous keeping them going any longer than that.

@@davidjames1389 I'm not sure on how much the average user runs their kit, but I planned on putting mine onto a switched receptacle with others on display and running it quite a bit. I was very depressed after building and painting the thing, only to have it run beside me the next day for 8 to 9 hours on the desk and then realize.... something isn't right when I glanced at it. Then my electrician brain (really) kicked in and I reasoned out the cause. It was something I didn't even acknowledge during the build. LEDs don't like heat, and those nacelles got very warm. I'm building another and have excluded the motors this time. BTW, credit to PL for making it right. Good customer service.
