I personally own the audio interface version and it's absolutely stellar! FYI, C.A.S.T link is actually just an audio-over-cat5 (NOT audio over IP like Dante, C.A.S.T just repurposes the conductors in a cat5 cable to transmit the analog signal) connection designed to break out the I/O of the units using special I/O modules that Cranborne sells.

Hi Glenn, Greetings from the UK. Love watching your vids. I’ve been using the Cranborne R8 and three Camden 500 pres for about 5 months now. It’s absolutely game changing gear. Being able to insert and return 500 modules to and from your daw with a flick of a switch. Having analog summing, just being able to mix analog seamlessly. 👍👍 Also the Camden pres are very transparent and clean. I can’t live without the thump mojo setting on anything. Really thickens everything in a musical way. Looking forward to your thoughts

I've got the Cranborne 500R8 audio interface. That thing is AWESOME. Huge step up from what I was working with before. Got one of their Camden 500 Pres as well and I'm probably going to get a second. Extremely flexible pre that can be as clean and clear as the best of them, but the "Mojo" knob is definitely fun to play with if I want more color. I'm particular to using the "Thump" to add some nice low end to a voiceover part or kick drum. I've yet to find a good use for the "Cream" setting, but it definitely adds some interesting harmonic distortion on the upper end. Could definitely help a track stand out a little bit if its getting buried. In any case, those guys at Cranborne have debuted with some pretty knockout products already, excited to see it evolve and what else they come up with.

@@mrcassette Well, I'm using it like any other USB audio interface I've had in the past. The fun part is that every single input/output is mapped in Windows, so I can even do stuff not necessarily related to music with it too. For example, I can run my nice microphones through the interface and the 500 modules I have, apply further processing in the DAW, have the DAW send back out to the interface on a different channel, then have Windows pickup audio from that channel. Viola, I now have radio-quality microphone audio while using Discord, streaming, etc. Slick stuff. All I have in there right now is a single pre, a compressor, and an EQ. It's my little "channel strip" so to speak. I plan on adding a 2nd pre in the near future so I can record stereo signals from my synthesizers. Haven't decided what else I'm going to stuff in there yet, probably going to be something I slowly add to, like 1 nice module a year or something.

Great video. I only recorded a couple times with the Cranborne R8 since I got it during CoVID. However, they are right that the Camden Mic Pre’s are very similar to the Earthworks ZDT Preamps, in that they are linear from like 5Hz or so to over 200 kHz. I used them with a Neumann M149, an Earthworks SV33, and my old Sheffield mic. The Mojo saturation circuit thought gives them a lot of Neve style dial-in saturation option. The CAST btw allows you to flexibly route in analog signals via ethernet to a little stage box or CAST rack module, bypassing expensive Mogami or other XLR and analog distortion pickup. AMAZING unit amazing preamps. Other than more WesAudio,I would not buy any other chassis for my studio now than the Cranborne’s.

Been eyeing one, just a huge investment when you consider the cards… The setup I’m wanting is around ten grand… that’s a lot of bones for hundreds of uncertain signal chain issuess… I guess everyone probably just start’s with a couple preamps though, and I guess that’s more reasonable if it doesn’t work out, definitely more portable than a thousand pounds of rack gear though and that’s why I’m interested in this one’s big brother with the interference and monitor controls… I hope I find a follow up video… 😉

They are leading by Far on the State of the Art, Leading Edge technology in the consumer/prosumer markets(ie cheap for what you get or Big Bang for the Buck)... Well at least that's the direction we're headed in.... As Glenn agree's, you don't need a $2000 4x4 interface to do Metal or Heavy Rock! Besides, Midas are no slouches and exceed the performance of those original $4000 pristine digital interfaces from 15 years ago, so ya! more than good enough!

However I'm thinking it's just a GAS thing and ultimately will slow my workflow because the outboard gear settings will not be saved in the session so it's hard to work on multiple projects at once...

Hey Glen, trying to solve an issue with getting my Scarlett 2i2 (Gen 3) interface working in Cubase 7 (had this forever unused and can't afford to upgrade). Drivers installed fine. Windows sound device for the 2i2 shows levels when I play the guitar. Monitor outputs on the 2i2 work fine. Cubase shows 2 mono inputs as you'd expect, and has been configured to use the Scarlett ASIO drivers. Add an audio track and there are no levels - I have to mention that the inputs for the track don't quite look right but I can only see 2 mono inputs to choose from no combination of inputs and interfaces on the 2i2 work. Re-installed Cubase too. Wondering if you or anyone else has had similar issues. KZread and forums are surprisingly fucking useless in this rare case. Thinking about a Windows re-install to have everything clean since the 2i2 was bought as a last ditch effort to record guitar. About to give up here. Oh and fuck you sideways, Glen.

@@SpectreSoundStudios yeah, I concur.... they spec right up there with Grace and Millennia audio. The thump gives you that transformer neve low end sound and the cream is sort of tape like to my ears, but can be pushed as well. The mojo thing aside, the clean pre sound is great which is really why I like them. A great all rounder no matter the source. The interface version if you haven't yet had a chance to try is really nice too. The headphone and master outs are hot and ultra clean, dude I had to turn my speakers down considerably. In all in one interface land, that's rare. Like console hot...the converters are top notch as well. very fast and punchy , no low end mush, things sound tight down there. I wanna see more from them for sure. I come from the classical world of recording and I would not think twice about using their gear for that genre. Very quiet too. I'm hoping they come out with a PWM compressor module with some sort of color knob like the Pre, give me an EQ too. I might even go as far as saying that these pres can't be beat, price aside..They take ribbons really well too.

@@rockinrobin8821 not sure how they compare to RME but I do know that they took note of RME stability when they were in the design phase of this thing. It is a solid usb driver they are using. You wont get ultra low latency or anything like that but that is what the mixer on the unit is for. It is a well thought out piece of gear, high quality and solid sound and you should have no problems tracking and mixing with it. The cons of it are they are kinda slow with updates, they have not update the firmware to a version 1 yet. It is still at .9 ....odd and they have not enabled certain digital features on the unit yet either. They have not released the headphone break out box just the passive one to date.. They are busy at it, but it's been a year now so hopefully they will drop some new gear soon. They need a comp and EQ unit and a software routing app for the units as well......that would put it over the top IMHO.

This will probably be a bit out of your wheelhouse but maybe you could find someone to explain this. What is the difference between Toslink, S/PDIF and ADAT and when and why would you use one over the other and how do other connectors like copper based hdmi for example fit in this picture. Especially since newer hdmi or displayports have afaik a far higher data transfer speed than any of these optical standards while having far more robust cables. P.s. I'm already subscribed but excessively loud explosion sounds to convince people to do so is a major turn off for me.

Yeah, digital versus analog summing. I have some significant observations and opinions here regarding this. We know that any hit recordings have been made with, digital summation. With 24 and 32-bit float architecture. And good enough for folks like, Chris Lord Algie, Bob Clearmountain and so many others. That's a given. And it's more than 100% adequate. But when it comes to, analog summing. This is where we find 2 significant types. The first type, of course. Is that original, large frame, extremely heavy, behemoth monster audio consoles. Such as, Neve, API, SSL, Sphere, etc., et al. And they cost a few bucks. And then we have your tabletop, rackmount, analog summing boxes. Oh yeah. Yeah baby. I got me a Neve, now. Yeah no. No you don't. I know there has been disillusionment amongst those. Who have purchased said analog summing boxes. And they can't figure out. Why they still do not have that analog console sound? They got the name brand gizmo. So where is that console thickness? And therein lies the issue. Let me explain. Here's why. Those analog summing boxes can fall so short. Granted. It in fact has those operational amplifiers and transformers. Yeah. 1 each per channel times 2. And do you think that's all that makes up one of those consoles sound? As that would be pretty dimwitted. Because it's so much more than that actually. In a, say, average (ha ha) vintage Neve console. From the time you plug-in your microphone. And by the time it comes out on the mix. Each microphone. Will have gone through. Approximately,, 8-16 transformers. And just as many operational amplifiers. By the time you get to the stereo mix output. Adware analog summing mixers. Have maybe 2. So while it is that sound. It's not enough of that sound. And so you might want to loop through your 16 channels summing mixer. Approximately 4 or 8 times? Then you might get closer to that full-blown console sound. Otherwise you will be left scratching your head. And thinking analog summation was just a ruse. And it must be something else they are using? Yeah there is. The whole fucking audio console twice or more through. And only then. Do you get the sound of those whole entire legendary audio consoles. And well? Who the hell has the money for those except rich guys? Everybody wants a piece of that also. So you get a piece of that. And then you only get, a piece of that sound. 1/8th. Of that characteristic sound. But if you want all that sound. It might cost you eight times more. And so how does that work out? It doesn't. You can't. It's out of your reach. Out of your realm. Out of your domain. And you think you're getting a wholemeal. But it's only an appetizer. It's just a snack. It's not the wholemeal. And people are then left. Scratching their heads and asses. And wondering why the recordings don't sound like they recorded on a whole big vintage Neve console? Well it's because you didn't. It's kind of the same thing. If you remove the body from your 1968 VW beetle. And you install upon that drivetrain. A beautiful looking clone recreation of a Lamborghini in fiberglass. What do you then have? You have. A car that will not win any races. As it is incapable. But it might get you laid? Because it looks so good. That doesn't mean it can deliver. It only means. She might deliver? And isn't that why you became a rock musician? So it really doesn't have to sound like you have a Neve console. It doesn't have to go fast as a Lamborghini. It only has to provide. The right feel. The right vibe. The right groove. The right punch. The right zing. And the right bucks. As it really makes no difference. When you yourself make a good recording and a great mix. On whatever equipment you have before you. Which is what real, Audio Engineers, simply do. See? Wasn't that easy. It's really that easy. RemyRAD
