    Nice looking sub. Seems like JBL has been studying and waiting to see where the small subwoofer market is going. Will definitely be interested to see you test it on music in your box.

    I like the features. But I agree a response of 46Hz is a bit high, and power handling is on the low side. Good lookn, but needs to take a lil more power

    Range of 50-1.5 kHz? They might want to see someone use this as a mid bass. Very interesting.

    That doesn't really mean anything, the enclosure is going to dictate it's usable range.

    MB, great video as always. Wanted to ask. Any opinions on Memphis Audio?? I got an MB 8 from them recently, sounds great considering I don't have a box. Mounted to factory location on a 2020 Civic SI sedan. But I feel like it's lacking low low notes (30hz -37hz). Would providing a good quality amplifier help?? Currently it's hooked to factory wiring with factory amp. But I know that's not enough power to get the most out of sub. Let me know. Apologize for the paragraph lol. God bless you🫡

    The box is why your not getting the lows, the amp may help some but your box is where your sound really starts!

    @M.B.Enclosures what's your thoughts on the ct sound tropo 6.5 sub? I got 2 in a big ported box at 47hz tune, slams in my odyssey on 500watts @1ohm! Personally I think it'd sound better at 4 but afraid 125watts isn't enough?

    my audiobahn flame subs from back in the day used the same principle in regards to the spider and the cone. they were rated at 96db sensitivity with an aluminum cone. they did quite a bit with an 1100 watt rms Memphis M class from 02' .

    I'm still trying to figure out this voice coil design. They are not clear about it and I can't find any info on it. Not even any patent info. This whole 2 or 4 ohm switch is bizarre as well. It's not internally switching coils from parallel to series. For instance, a dual 2 ohm coil would switch between 1 and 4. A dual 4 ohm coil with switch between 2 and 8. How are they switching between 2 and 4 ohm? Is it a dual 2 ohm coil and they are switching between only using 1 coil or both coils (wired in series)? That would drastically change the power handling and performance. Plus the Bl would double and it's not. It's only increasing 40% or so. A lot of mysteries with this driver. I guess the bottom line is how does it sound and perform in the real world.

    I was thinking the same thing. Thanks for the catch on the dual magnetic gap. I misunderstood that so I redid the video. But the tech been in place for years now.

  • @JasonWW2000
    @JasonWW200020 күн бұрын

    Here's another theory I'll float concerning the voice coil layout. What if it has dual voice coils, but only one is used at a time? The switch actually flips between a 2 ohm voice coil and a 4-ohm voice coil? Huh? Maybe? That would explain why the power handling is the same between the two impedances. It would also explain why the BL only goes up 40% when switched to 4 ohm. I'm thinking of wasting 100 bucks and buying the Kappa 8-inch just so I can take it apart and see what the switch is doing. Maybe I can test it without taking it apart. If MB still has his JBL Stadium maybe he could measure for AC voltage across both sets of tinsel leads and then measure again with the switch in the other position. I think the Stadium has exposed tinsel leads. The Arena leads look hidden.

    I came across a 14-year-old video when Infinity came out with this selectable impedance. Several people in the comment section claim it uses three voice coils.

    Why would you say that? This is their top-of-the-line subwoofer and cost $400. If it doesn't suit your specific needs, that's fine. You just need to go and find what works best for you. There's no need for name calling.

    @@Handlethatineedtouse It's not about right or wrong, it's just an opinion. Personally, I have not listened to it so I can't really give an opinion on it. The most likely scenario is JBL designed it for a particular type of person. If Ryan heard it, which I don't think he has, and thought it sounded terrible, that's fine. He can say it's not up to his standards or he doesn't care for it's sound, etc... There's no need to call it insulting names.
