Yesterday I was pleasantly surprised by a watch company.
This Sunday as I smashed my 1969 Seamaster 300 against the center counsel while out on the bay (no real damage just a scratch on the Hasailite crystal) I came to realize that it’s time to retire my Seamaster 300 to land and pool duties only.
She has just become too expensive of a watch to use as a tool.
So I began to think about which tool watch to buy.
I have a Casio GWM5610-1 GShock which is an amazing watch but I wanted mechanical, not to expensive, iconic and the ability to take a beating.
Then I thought about the thread I posted about 6 watches for 25k (Chrono, Diver, GMT, beater, Dress, and Vintage)
For Diver I picked the Seiko 6105-8110 1970's remake (SLA033) the Apocalypse Now watch at $4000 dollars! thats about $1500 that an original one in great condition! But then I found out about the revision of the original in the SPB151(a bit smaller at 42mm diameter instead of the SLA033 45mm diameter) for $2800 dollars less ($1300) and that became my choice.
(Update... I am Number 7 on the wait list to purchase SPB151 when its released with the AD here in Miami, due in now around July/August)
So once safely on the list I began, like I always do, to obsessively research Seiko Divers and Eventually came across the SRP777 (aka the Turtle) basically the reimagined 6309-7040 from 1976-1988.
And my logic told me since I was buying the SPB151 I had to start training my wrist to wear a bigger watch!
So that Sunday night took $350 of $400 that I had in my account from selling an old Helbros I had and pulled the trigger on the SRP777.
(Which is very rare for me, I have a 3 day wait rule before buying anything... guess I threw that rule went out the window for the Seiko, and I’m glad I did!)
And guess what? It arrived yesterday!
Wow! What a great looking watch... and it sits perfect on my wrist because it’s lug distance is only 47mm!
It actually looks smaller than it is...
And for $350!
I love history, and if an item has it, I’m even more attracted to it... well, this watch oozes history... the case resembles the 1967-69 6105-8000... but the watch it directly takes after is the 6309-7040.
The biggest differences between the 6309 and it’s reincarnation the SRP777, is the dial script and the second hand lollipop (Looks like that was done due to balance issues).
Anyway, I present to you a watch that came out in 2016, that I discovered only 2 days ago, and from a company that I have never bought from!
Talk about rolling the dice!
And I hit the nail right on the head!
I see a long life with this watch on my wrist.
Guys if you need a watch that you know will take a beating, look good doing it, will not hurt your wallet and you'llwill just shrug off the bumps and scratches and not cringe as you do with other more expensive watches.
Get the Turtle! Go Seiko SRP777!

Got mine during the peak of the covid(2021). I named my srp777J "plandemic watch" because i use to wear it everyday for work as a medical frontliner with the original rubber strap because need to wash my hands everytime so theres no problem with getting the strap wet. This will remind my child soon about this event when i pass this watch to him soon.😅
A great watch! I have had my SRP777 for three and a half years and I'm delighted with it. I have dived with it many times ( up to 80 meters) and very happy, no problem. Three months ago I put a coin bezel,ceramic insert with lune and flat sapphire crystal. Great video and great choice. Thanks for sharing.
I bought this watch a few years ago when it was released and i still love it, i also bought the blue dial version for my father and he loved it too until the day he passed, he said it was a manly watch and would say it with a proud giggle on his face. Enjoy it!

RandomGuitarNote it’s the best tool watch I have ever had even now after a few months I love wearing it. The Uncle Seiko straps I have put it on are great but I’m a bracelet guy... so I went ahead and bought the uncle seiko oyster bracelet and anxiously awaiting the mail man to drop it off. I’m going to do an unboxing of the bracelet as well... stay tuned and enjoy your Turtle!
The Turtle is often passed over but it truly is an awesome tool watch and it fits very comfortably I have a PADI Pepsi turtle and I love it , but now I want a black one….

Been wearing my 777 since January 2016, still love it!
This is my first true watch that I bought back in 2020, around in May. I’ve had this for three years and used it mostly as a everyday tool watch. It has some scuffs from me doing retail work, but it’s never let me down. I adore my Seiko Turtle and will keep it with me for my lifetime. Such a wonderful, awesome watch.

Love this video! It´s way different from the average "size, cristal, lume and conclusions". Love the way you show us this wonderful piece. You explain it in a different way and make the video really interesant and pleasand to see. Also the Omega and the Smith you showed are two of my favourites watch. Just sucribed to your channel. Thanks a lot. The SRP777 it´s also my favourite beater. Big enough, good presence, History and possibly one of the most confortable watch to wear. I just love it!

Just stumbled across your channel and I'm loving the content - perhaps too much so as this video played no small part in my purchase of a SRPC35K1 "Baby Turtle" (more suitable for my thinner wrist) today! I too am contemplating the SPB151 as well but haven't fully committed to it mentally yet, especially considering its controversial price tag. Would love to see an update on your time with the SRP777 and perhaps a breakdown of your thoughts on the SPB151. Looking forward to more videos!
It is a great tool watch! I have the SRPH55 “King Turtle”. Sapphire crystal, ceramic bezel insert and it came with a steel bracelet and silicon strap. I was able to get it on sale (20% off retail) and it represents great, great value. Durable and comfortable. It gets a lot of wrist time when I am working or at the gym.

Blanchard Watch Company I’m looking at adding the SPB151 to my collection too or maybe the SPB145. I’m going to have to let some of my Current Seikos go though I think.

@@Vow247 Yes, same here... selling a few of the watches I never wear to fund the SPB151. I sold my 1960's Helbros Invincible for the SRP777 and had some left over for the SPB151 fund. Very excited to see the 151... since its 42mm it'll probably become my 'dress' watch much like folks used their Submariners as their 'dress ' watch. The 777 will be relegated to Tool Watch duties/daily. Lets see how long the honeymoon phase lasts cause it could make some of my other watches obsolete... hehehe
Retiring a classic like the Speedmaster - good decision ! I had 1995 Girard-Perregaux chrono sports watch that I used daily in my job as a chef and I also used to use it on the beach - it was only classed as "water resistant" - the watch finally gave up on me after 15 years of abuse. That Seiko looks like an excellent choice for beaches, rivers and sea use.

The SRP777 is a fantastic tool watch... but that’s what it is... my Seamaster 300 was not only a tool watch but it was a jack of all trades and why it became my main watch for decades. But now I am hoping I found my next decade daily in the Seiko Willard. Today I was finally supposed to receive my SBDC109 (SPB151 Willard) but it looks like it will arrive in the morning. According to FedEx it’s here... but now it’s 9:27 pm and I doubt hey will deliver it this late... oh well one more night. I did a lot of homework trying to figure out which watch would fit the Bill... it had to be below 1500 so I wouldn’t worry about beating it up... but it had to be eclectic, robust, look unique and with the ability to play with a suit. The jack of all trades... and I think I have found it in the Willard... only time will tell but I am very enthusiastic. The SRP777 will end up on my dads wrist.

@@RobertBlanchardGood luck with the Willard, it's a beautiful iconic, very masculine piece but just a bit too big for me: 42mm with shortish lugs is my limit. It might be worth sprucing up your Seamaster by changing the crystal and getting it professionally polished - buffing out the major scratches - it would look great but still retain the rugged wear and tear look it has accumulated over the years. I did this with my 1978 Omega Geneve. I think my next piece will be a 42 m Steinhart diver or the newish released 42m Citizen auto "Fugu" both are really purposeful-looking watches at about 500 euros .

@@mediastarguest I have the Vintage Oceans 39 GMT and it’s one of my favorite watches. I enjoy it so much that I decided to get the Oceans 39 Explorer sub... I thought that would be my watch... but we never clicked... I tried, so let’s see how the Willard takes.... I have a 7.5 inch wrist (19 cm) so the size will work just fine... it’s the connection to the watch that’s important. Should arrive this morning... excited!
I just got the Mini Turtle about a month ago, and now I somehow I feel I want this as well! I guess the Seiko divers bug hit me really hard.

Yeah, that’s what happens when you see to many Hollywood movies and fall into “sky is falling” talking heads. That said, I did enjoy staying home and building a deck😁
Thx for the video, this watch is on my wishlist bought a citizen promaster eco drive good study care free watch but somehow it's not for me, it wears very small on my 7.3 inch wrist, so I'll be saving up for the turle.
I changed the strap on mine to a shark mesh strap on really looks nice.

Loved every second of that video. My son and I had a great laugh at the scuba diving photo. The srp777 was the watch that got me into watches almost 3 years ago. I still have it and its probably my favourite watch. Its a nicer piece than the new spb151 if you ask me.

Thank you! I have a new respect for Seiko and its Turtle design (now that I finally own one)...To think they came out with that case in 76 is pretty impressive. Always wanted the 6105-8110 but the lack of a screw down threw me off from buying one throughout the years. And by the time I came around to the Turtle design they were already 10 years past production, and I never really took a liking to the SKX. But I am so happy to have re-found the Turtle (even thought they came out in 2016!) I have yet to take off the watch and frankly I don't see myself taking it off for quite some time. I just checks every box. Although I might do a slight Mod to mine. thinking of changing 2 things. The second hand to basically the same second hand but it has Lum on the tip... I do find myself using the seconds hand a lot. And the Day wheel. I went ahead and bought a black Day wheel to balance the dial a bit more. But thats it. As for the SPB151 when they do come in (probably August) I will go in with Turtle on the wrist so I can do a good comparison at the AD. If I like what I see then I'll buy. My take on the 151 is that I believe Seiko is trying to capture those of us that think that wearing a dive watch with a Tux/suit is normal attire... (I think that way and have always worn my dive watch with my suits) and that's why I believe they came down in size with the SPB151. Key is going to be its height. Stay safe!
I just bought the black dial with the Pepsi bezel. It wears well on my 6 1/4" wrist. I love it!

Hi, you have exactly the same sized wrist as me and I was worried the standard 44mm Turtle wouldn't fit - I was thinking about the mini turtle - but if the full-sized one fits - may go for the same as you.

i bought this watch the year it came out. i had no idea about watches, i just wanted one that looked like my dad's omega seamaster. by sheer luck i landed on this model. i had no idea what automatic even meant. as i learned more about it the more i treasure it. the rubber band is amazing but i find it frequently escapes the keeper...dangerous. tried the oyster bracelet...too heavy and noisy. i've been using it on a black nato strap now for years. looks super cool on a waffle style rubber strap

jonasvm88 yes, it’s a great watch... I have also done the strap bracelet dance... it looks really good on the bracelet and I’m a bracelet guy... but like you said, it’s a bit heavy. I have ended up putting it on the UncleSeiko Tropic strap and never looked back! The go for 39 dollars and worth every penny. Since it’s rubber on the weekends when we go play in the bay I just don’t take off the watch and when back home we jump in the pool the strap dries quick and I don’t give it a second thought, plus it’s vintage looks really work well with the turtle shape. Keep enjoying it!

Crazy is that I feel that the srp77 is such a perfect watch that I’m having second thoughts on purchasing the SPB151 (new “captain Willard”) I’m still going to buy one but now I can wait for prices to come down a bit then I’ll buy.
I bought this model instead of King Turtle because this model is in my opinion more classic. I wish Seiko had put a bit red text too on the dial… for example the text ” diver’s 200m”

Agree… that’s why I ended up modding it with a red tip second hand and a black date wheel with Roman numerals and red square Sunday. Really love the way it looks now! Enjoy your 777! Best automatic tool diver for the price!

I disagree... even with Zombies running around one needs to know the time... example, what happens if that hot girl you met under the collapsed building is wearing a Casio 5610-1 solar Gshock and she asks you to meet up tomorrow at 1:45, which will give you a few hours the following day to find the nearest zombie-infested mall to scavenge the Polo shop, dress up and find some Axe for men and be halfway presentable for the meet... oooooor no watch then you might just die not knowing the warm embrace of a fellow smelly human since she hasn't taken a shower in weeks... just saying (man I have to much time on my hands, need to get back to work)
I like the SKX007/009 a little better. Sure the 7s26 movement is junk. But it is very common and easy to replace. Which means the SKX can live forever. Also the SKX is smaller. Easier to wear all day.

I like your review of the watch! My gf just gave me a tough choice for my birthday, she put 2 watches in front of me. A Seiko King turtle with black dial and bracelet (SRPE03K1) and Tissot seastar 1000 powermatic 80 also witch black dial (T120.407.11.051.00). Now im stuck which to choose. Already have a seiko (SKA721P1) as an every day watch and another tissot (T0994071603700) wich i both love. what to choose....?

I like both... if you like classic vintage diver presence then go Tissot (It is a bit 'angular for my taste). The Seiko Turtle design is on a planet all its own and a very cool planet at that. I love the curves and general feel of the watch case, they definitely got it right probably the most comfortable watch case I have worn. If I was presented with these two choices and since I already have a few 'classic' divers I would go Seiko. That said, now that I own the Turtle it's going to be hard for me to go back to the classic diver look! I also prefer the Hardlex crystal over the sapphire (king Turtle now comes with Sapphire) I know kinda nuts in today's type of thinking... but for me the Hardlex gives a nod to the history that is the Seiko Diver plus it'll show that you use the watch... which is why one buys this watch to begin with.. and I still stand by my statement as 'the best tool watch I have ever owned' (now going on Week 2 ;-).

I have since given my Turtle to my father... why? Because I finally bought the Willard (SBDC109) and as much as I love the turtle I needed a watch as a daily and the turtle was just to bulky.... the Willard on the inter hand, dare I say fits perfectly on my wrist... I just can’t seem to take it off! All that said, I still stand by my comment... for the price the SRP777 is the best automatic tool watch one can own.

Once I pass them down they can do as they wish with them. A good service will make WP once again. For now I know one of my boys likes collecting like I do... so he’ll enjoy wearing them into the future.

Blanchard Watch Company From what I've heard, from a couple highly respected Rolex repairshops, is 20 years and the gaskets and such are unreliable. I have a gorgeous Rolex from the 1950s that they've assured me cannot be made water resistant. I mean, maybe if NASA is deployed they could find a way, but for normal consumer use, seems not. So I wondet if you know of repairmen who can. That would be good news.

Arbo Gash interesting... I would think that if there is no damage to case, crown, etc a set of new o rings would give it at minimum ‘shower resistance’ it’s why I bought my SRP777... I wanted something robust that would last me decades and would be easy (inexpensive) to replace if a catastrophic event would occur. That said I have been really contemplating the Willard (SBDC109) it’s a clear 900 more but it is smaller than the Turtle and might fit in the ‘daily spot’ as well as the ‘diver spot’. And then all I have left is the dress watch... that new alpinist is looking a like a great contender.
That’s a watchco, every part is service.

I felt the same way until I owned it and looked at it everyday... the X became part of the whole package for me... and now it’s like a badge... when you see the X you know you have a watch capable of taking whatever you throw at it!
