Cindie, I guess this would seem like junk if you're used to working with high end yarn, but I would LOVE to have it! I make hats for charity and, as our ministry only takes donations of yarn, I have to work with what I get. I've gotten some new and whole skeins, but mostly I am given tangled masses of yarn that take hours to untangle and half finished projects that are nearly impossible to frog, but the best ones are the skeins the ladies in our charity call "self-dyed," meaning that the yarn is stained with various liquids and even solids, if you get my drift. I literally cried the day a very wealthy lady proudly handed me a bag containing a half dozen skeins of beautiful peach angora covered in doggie doo. (This really happened.) Needless to say, I would jump for joy to find a few of these boxes of good, usable yarn from Walmart dropped off for me to work with. It's shameful that crafters would expect another crocheter to use yarn stained with God's knows what just because "it's for charity." Then they have the nerve to ask for a donation receipt! Incidentally, a series of alternating washes with Mr. Clean and Pine Sol gets out the smell of cat pee, but it's a mess to untangle afterwards. It's not so bad if the yarn is "hanked" beforehand, but it takes a long time to dry, even in the sun. Still, it's like throwing hats away for us, so we'll usually go to the trouble of washing the smell out. We just repeat to ourselves the mantra "It's for charity..."

No donation receipt needed. I do charity work, but am not associated with a group. I will never be able to use all of it and I’m not sure if there is anyone local that would use it. I live in the Panhandle of Texas (in the upper North part). Is this something you would be interested in? God Bless you and your group.

The condition of those skeins means it's likely they've all been written off as losses already. They could have charged $5 for that box. The price is too greedy.

This seems like a major scam, especially if there wasn’t a disclaimer on their website stating that the skeins were returned/missing yardage/faulty/without label.

That skein that wasn't "spun" wasn't "twisted" I used to work in a yarn mill in my twenties, many many years ago. I did doffing off the spinners (took single strand bobbins from roving) to brought them to the twisters (put 2 or more bobbins together to twist together). I did twisting towards the end of my yarn "career".

I never heard of Walmart having "mystery yarn" for sale before. But after seeing what you got, I'd never buy it. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I can see selling the Red Heart skeins that are missing labels in that, but certainly not those partial and messed up skeins, and definitely not at that price. Quite a rip off in my opinion. I've gotten three times as much at thrift stores for half as much when I've found it at them. What you got wouldn't have been too bad if it was only $10 or $15 max. But, I bet Evelyn would have a great time using those skeins with the knitting loom. Mr. BOD may have to build her some yarn shelves so she can start her yarn collection 😉 New yarn type...Baby BOD Yarn. 😍

Although I love yarn I would rather pay for full skeins. Seems to me this isnt worth the buy especially the fact that it's only 5 lbs and non of them are the same. That last mystery box had multiples of the same, I know it was 10 lbs but didnt it cost like $27-$28?

I think the pink was a Bernat baby yarn. I also think the blue and white variegated was Mainstay. I saw something similar at one of the Walmart stores in our area.

Ok, I did not know Wal-Mart did these boxes and to be honest I got excited when I saw the title of the video. I am so thankful that you did this unboxing, you saved me from an anxiety attack and wasting my money! You rock Crystal

The blue variegated is the mainstays brand. My Wal-Mart just got that color in. Most definitely not worth 38 bucks IMO.

I’ve noticed at my Walmart’s very small selection of yarn that the shelves have been empty for months. It hasn’t been restocked. Anyone else’s Walmart yarn shelves look bare lately?

The same here. The section was always small, just one side of a row, but over the last year it is always empty and the selection is awful. They carry super bulky yarn mainly. And the smallest selection of Red Heart I’ve ever seen...

Yes.. my Walmart has very little yarn and what they do have, it’s only 1 or 2 matching skeins.. luckily, Joann’s is next door!

its great scrap yarn but I agree, I'd rather have mill ends yarnspirations or lucky bag from hobbii.

You are absolutely my favorite yarn junkie! They may very well be returns. A woman in a FB group that I belong to, bought a mandala cake and found someone had already started crocheting with it. They literally just shoved the work in the middle.

I am pretty sure you are correct. I think Bernat Softee Baby in soft pink. I made a little blanket for my friend's kitten in soft blue because her name is Aurora from Sleeping Beauty.😻

I'd imagine that the partial skeins are smaller because they had to cut off wads of tangles from them. If your Walmarts are anything like mine, people aren't careful when looking through for what they want and they end up a big mess. Then they have to charge for the wage of the employee who gets to clean up the yarn before packing and shipping. I agree that they're charging too much.

I looked up the website on the outside of the box and it appears to be a craft supply website. I think they have mostly craft yarn. I wonder if Walmart bought from them. It's interesting that they website is listed...as such it's a third-party deal. Not something I would consider. I have enough single skeins of every type and style imaginable to get through. Your face when you opened the box was priceless!!!!

yeah, i hate red heart super saver. very abrasive and irritates my skin. red heart boutique unforgettables is nice though. kinda like lion brand landscapes.

That "assortment" is an insult to customers. Truly! What a mess. What a disgrace. I would return it. They don't deserve your money for that nonsense! Seriously, I would return it AND I would write a SCATHING letter to corporate! Writing letters gets results. Make sure to let them know you have a KZread channel, to get their attention.

That’s what I thought. I’ve used Red Heart variegated yarn before and their skeins aren’t as big for that colorway of yarn. Their variegated yarn is 5oz and the yarn she picked up looks to be 7oz.

I wouldn’t buy it. It looks like a big ripoff to me. Big disappointment.

The Wal-Mart near me has DRASTICALLY cut down on the amount of yarn that they carry. Now it's only half of one side of an aisle, ( so a quarter of an aisle) and they are pushing the Mainstay brand. Thanks for this review. You have saved a lot of people money.
