Unboxing, Install, and first drive with Comma.ai's Openpilot (self driving) on 2019 Camry Hybrid

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

I have had my eye on this self driving technology from Comma.ai for several years now. It has evolved nicely and now that I have a compatible car, I have been eager to give it a go. I have to thank the many people that recorded their comma two installs, those videos helped me with my install, and made it so easy. The video is not professional, but I hope that it helps others, and for those looking into Openpilot, I hope that you enjoy this video.

    Good video. I have been thinking about AutoPilot, but keep getting stuck with not being able to trust them as you always have to be aware and always have to be ready to take over. They don't recognize people, animals, or traffic devices, etc. Still, I'm thinking about it. lol

    Great video! If Toyota and other major automakers start using OpenPilot as their software and charge a subscription service for OTA updates, you have a major Tesla Autopilot contender.

    I just completed another 4-Hour, 280 mile trip today. After the drive, I do not feel the driver fatigue that I normally do driving without it. If you have a capable car, and you drive a lot, I highly recommend openpilot. I have found it to be incredibly reliable. You have to learn its capabilities and limitations and adjust accordingly.

I am gonna go for the comma 3. I feel the 3 will be here for a while...don't know what the 4 could bring hardware wise that the 3 would struggle with as it has the best sony sensor available

    What's the difference between this and the adaptive cruise control? Does this one stop at traffic lights?

  • @joewilkinson5866

    @joewilkinson5866

    3 жыл бұрын

    As of version 0.8.6, Openpilot does not yet stop at stop lights or stop signs, but adaptive cruise control does not either. Adaptive cruise control uses radar to sense a car in front and slows down when necessary without the driver having to take action. This system uses the adaptive cruise control but also keeps the car in its lane without driver assistance. I have driven about 2k miles so far using this and it REALLY helps. No more driver fatigue.

    I don't recall exactly. I beleive it was v0.8.8. It is now on v0.12 and has significantly changed for the better with regards to center of the lane stabilization, driver monitoring. Just after I purchased, they came out with the comma 3, which uses the same software, but is more advanced hardware with better cameras. It is also a custom piece of hardware instead of a phone, which is the comma two. I have had it for 7 months now. It has driven me and my family around for 13k miles. WE ALL ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. I don't understand why anyone with a 2017 or newer car would not have one. It is so much safer than manual driving and is 100% alert 100% of the time. There are times, when someone pulls in front of me, or cuts me off, that it slams on the brakes much harder than I would, but that is nit-picking. That is also because of the Toyota radar, and not the openpilot, so I really have no complaints. It is the perfect addition to my drives and does everything a level 2 self-driving aid should do. I too am eager for advances in autonomous driving (levels 3, 4, and 5) but for now, this is whats available, and it is FAR better than level 0 or a manufacturer's lane assist!

    @@joewilkinson5866Joe my friend, thank you very much for your feedback. You're still with comma 2, but with V0.12 update, right? I started researching this year when a friend who works with delivery here in Brazil commented. I found this very positive change of hardware in place of the smartphone cool. How the code is. open, here I saw some people improving the positioning more to the left of the lane to not have the mirror broken by motorcycles. I mainly want to have "Stop and Go", driver monitoring and road speed reading so I don't have to worry about tickets. What do you suggest I buy today with the best cost benefit? I don't know if buying through the website and shipping to Brazil will be advantageous, I have yet to analyze this. Big hug Rob

    I have been regularly using my Comma 2 since I installed it back in June of 2021. I have not upgraded to the 3 because they want a lot of money, and I can't take full advantage of the Comma 3 features due to my Toyota limitations, but I love the Comma 2. Before Comma.ai ended support for my Comma 2, I had driven it 30k miles. We drive a lot as a family because we like to get away and we have annual passes to some of the theme parks in CA. I didn't keep track of the miles, but I can safely assume that it has driven my family safely well beyond 70k miles. I have never looked back, I refuse to drive long trips without it. In fact, if I have to drive over 10 miles, I use it. It is just to easy to use and once you get used to its limitations, it is just a new and better way of driving. I am now stuck on the last supported version of Comma 2, but it works for me.
