This gadget adds advanced adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping technology to your car

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The Comma.ai CEO rolled out the latest version of his company's assisted-driving hardware here at CES 2020, featuring a more user-friendly interface and a cleaner install. The Comma Two is a piece of hardware about the size of a smartphone that can be mounted on your windshield. A forward-facing camera shows the road ahead with your lane highlighted, your speed and the speed limit.
To activate, you download the Openpilot software. It's free, open-source software that gives many late-model vehicles from Acura, Chrysler, Honda, Jeep, Kia, Subaru and Toyota the ability to accelerate, brake and stay in a lane with no intervention from the driver.

    What? You can speak your mind just fine and there are countless ways to speak your mind as well. There's always a way to word something better so that it is more receptive. At the end of the day, it's how people perceive you and that plays a key role in how much they respect you and will listen to you. You can't live in a society with people around you and just say and do whatever you want. If that' the case, then they are also free to think and say whatever they want about you as well. All fair game right?

    For that scenario in the beginning when the car was about to hit the truck, the system should warn the driver of what it thinks is happening and say what it will do “high speed large vehicle ahead, autopilot will swerve left” . This gives the driver a sense of what to expect.

    Why is everyone stressing hands free driving? As an older person what would be much more useful is a simpler warning system for when my car starts to drift out of the lane or a dangerous driving situation starts to occur. My hands are on the wheel already and I can react quickly. I use cruse control and over the years I have developed the *strong* habit of keeping my foot an inch or two above the gas pedal. I developed this habit after several close calls with stopped traffic and the additional delay of lifting my foot from the floor made the close call even closer. With hands free "assisted" driving what do you do with your hands? Keep them hovering over the steering wheel? Not likely. Try sitting at your desk and hold your hands over the keyboard for 15 minutes without touching anything. It takes a lot of upper body strength and stamina. So what do you do with your hands while the assisted driving is on? Hold them to your chest like the woman in the video? Put them in your lap? Pick up your coffee? Rummage in your purse or backpack? What does this add to your reaction time? A better solution for me is a system where I keep my hand or hands on the steering wheel all the time and the assist system nudges the wheel strongly enough that my relaxed hands can go with the flow, but allowing me to override the steering if I see a danger. My hands are on the wheel, reacting to the road, ready to respond to the unexpected. The primary goal of the lane assist system is to make my driving safer, not to drive the car most of the time except for the unexpected times.

  • @Michael-xr8qp

    @Michael-xr8qp

    You know you can keep your hands on the wheel while this is happening right? She just chose not to. As long as you aren't moving the steering wheel, going with the flow is entirely possible. Also, why is putting your hands on your lap so much harder than keeping them on the steering wheel for you? Just sit in the chair.

    @@FarHanSolo Haven't tried in the snow yet but I suspect it would do okay following other cars tracks and just fail with no visable tracks. That said this isn't full autonomous and I'd never let it drive in those conditions other than a quick test on a road by myself out of curiosity. The main thing stopping this from being ready for the masses is comments like yours proving most don't have the brain capacity to understand there's an in between full manual and full autonomous. We've been working our way up that curve since cars where invented and this is just another incremental step along the way. If you can't see the value in a system that works damn good most of the time you're probably the type that doesn't even use cruise on the highway which is why I had to get radar cruise since you monkeys suck at maintaining speed. You're loss really. I've used this system on an 2400 mile road trip it handled 90-95% of the highway driving and really made 8 hour days on the road feel more like 5 hours. You get really comfortable with it's limitations the same way you do with regular cruise control pretty quickly and it's as simple as driving without it in the first place to take over for a second then re-engage. I had several sections on this trip where I had no interaction aside from looking out the window paying attention for 30-60 minutes at a time. For the naysayers it's possible to drive a Model T also but I bet most of you have no idea how Manual that car is compared to your modern automatic car(seriously you're on YT look up a video manual spark advance,most of you don't even know what that is thanks to automation,just saying). The automatic transmission didn't mean you could stop paying attention either but it made driving easier(if a bit less fun).

    I think it's something he's getting wrong, he doesn't believe in marketing because he said that for him it's like fooling people and that it doesn't make it natural but the truth is that he has a system as good as the tesla one but people will trust in tesla and not in comma simply because tesla is great at marketing and comma is terrible

    Does anyone know if these work on semi-trucks? Just curious, I’m not a truck driver and not saying like ‘oh, it shouldn’t be on semi’s or it should’ I’m neutral on it, but also think it would be pretty cool if it does.

    If mainstream manufacturers adopted this system in their cars, I’d be inclined to buy their cars. Having a Comma Two hanging on my Pilot’s windshield doesn’t really appeal to me. I don’t drive a lot though... But I can see it being really useful for professional drivers in improving safety and reducing stress and fatigue.

    I have the base model 2019 Kia Forte. When I emailed support, I was told that it doesn't add ACC and Lane Keeping -- as this video's description suggests. For the device to work, your car must come with those functionalities as standard -- mine doesn't. Can some please clarify?

    So, car engines have a computer problem that has plagued them since the 90s. That is that they are extremely basic and not designed well, and they haven't changed much in almost 30 years. What this device/software does is attempt to interact with that car computer to make it better. That's all it does. It's basically a ginormous removeable software upgrade for the engine computer. The problem here is that the engine computer is the component actually driving the car. A good analogy is your brain and nervous system. Sure, you have legs (wheels) and a brain (this thing), but if you break your lower back, your nervous system isnt connected to it anymore, so neither is your brain. If the car computer doesn't have builtin control of/connection to steering, gas, brakes, and radar sensors, this smart "brain" device doesn't either. So, the engine's computer in the Kia Forte probably isnt connected to any sensors or the steering wheel. Therefore no assistive driving. The only way to fix that is to get aftermarket parts or get a different car
