I would really like to try the dark black winged pencil. Since I draw so light naturally, this would help a lot. It was a very interesting video, as always Karen! I don't think I would have bothered with the project because that seems too time-consuming and I have very little time now. Thank you Karen for another wonderful video.

After watching i looked around for the best price on these. I found some at the General Store. So I purchased one limited box -the blackwing 223 pencils and a mixed box that I don’t remember all the numbers. I’ve been using the 602, the white one (with a blue eraser), and I’m going to start working with 223. From what I’ve been drawing with I’m enjoying the 602. I really like the eraser shape also. Thanks for the review, They are cool.

A few months back I ordered a box of 12 matte Blackwing pencils. When I told my partner that I paid a ridiculous amount of money for 12 pencils and showed them to him, he said he had one of those. He went out to our pottery studio and came in with a very short Blackwing pencil. It's a 602 and after a little research discovered that it was mfg. prior to 1998, and used ones were selling on Ebay for $40! I love my matte Blackwings. They are my go to pencils for everything.

What a fabulous video Karen! I love watching your videos, I always learn something. This time I learned not to buy the Blackwing subscription box. If you have trouble with the extras that come in the box, there’s no hope for me.💜 Yuppers, I love Blackwings and buy them by the dozen. Who’s fault is this? Yours of course, and I thank you for it every single time I pick up 1 to draw with. My favorite is the deep dark soft graphite of the black ones. This month I tried a new one, Blackwing Vol. 93, it’s still the same deep dark black soft graphite but in a pretty multi color pencil with a white eraser. I don’t know if it’s possible but it seems even darker than my regular Blackwings.💜 💜💜

Hi Karen- I love drawing with the white blackwing. I purchased the 3 set years ago and I grab the white one most. I think they are kind of magical too. Usually I use my pentel mechanical pencil. I’m kind of precious with blackwing. Honestly, whenever I draw with blackwing my drawing come out better but I hesitate to say this bc it sounds ridiculous.😂 Your drawings are amazing! I can’t believe the crap in your subscription box and I’m not talking about the pencils. WTF? Looking forward to next subscription box. Hopefully better. Thanks so much for sharing this with us. 💕

Thanks, Karen! Loved this video! I never would have heard of the Blackwing, pencil if not for you! And I am so happy I tried them! I bought a second set of three right away and the white handheld sharpener which I LOVE because I do believe it saves graphite compared to any other sharpener especially an automatic sharpener and these are so pricey. I am too tight to waste any graphite in a sharpener lol! Anyway, I have since bought the set of 12 silver and the another set of 12 in the black. If you had EVER told me, I would be spending this much money on pencils I would have laughed in your face! But! I was sold! HOOK, LINE, and SINKER!!! These are worth every single cent and in the long run I save money compared to buying any other pencil. Plus, I love not having to carry around a dozen pencils! These are amazing! I recommend and can't imagine ANYONE not loving them!!! As for the subscription, yea. I agree...that was like homework! But people like my oldest son, Josiah, would love that! Not me!!! I just want my silver and black Blackwing, they are both my favorite, but I think I would like that hardest pencil. Those seem like they would erase much better than the others do, without leaving shadows behind. I will definitely try those sometime because I still do a lot of erasing. And my white sharpener is a favorite too. That's my two cents.

Oh Karen, I can't believe you took time to put together the zoetrope, but it was funny to watch 😂. I so don't have time or interest in gimmicky stuff. I would have just sharpened a pencil and started drawing. I heard about the Blackwings from you and have been using them ever since joining your club in addition to my trusty Pentel Graphgear. The Stabilo All is massively water-reactive and jet black while the Blackwings are plain (but still somehow soft and amazing graphite). You can find them at Jerry’s Artarama and on Amazon amzn.to/3BW3ziz

Soooo….that was interesting! Love the black Blackwing pencil and the eraser. Have not tried any of the others. Would rather have an extra pencil or eraser than the do it yourself gizmo that seems useless. Good for a laugh😃

I bought a set of one matte, one pearl, and one gray, I think. I love, love the matte one. I will definitely buy more of those. I'm so glad you showed the sheet that showed how they compare to the H and B pencils. The different pencils make so much sense to me now. I think by the end of that project I would be shouting with a migraine! I wouldn't let it get the better of me, but I'd be hating it! 🤣 So why were you not supposed to make the video? I’m actually on my 3rd set of Ohuhu skin tone markers, I love them so much! I even published a whole book around them (called Skin Tone Secrets). So I’d actually skip the Copics and just go Ohuhu over again to be honest. The 36 set of Ohuhus is only $5 more than the 6 skin tones Copics! Ya know? Crazy!

Funny video. I feel your frustration.This is how my time gets taken hostage on something that wasn't EVEN on my agenda for the day. At least that's my experience. Then at the end of the day I wonder where the time went and why I didn't get my planned goals/tasks completed. Sometimes, I just say, "No. Uh uh. I'm not going down that rabbit hole." I love the Black Wing pencils. I still can't believe I spent $30 on them. (But, hey, I'm worth it.😊) The eraser. I really like the eraser. 😳 I didn't know that you can pull it out, flip it over, or replace it. Uh, I think I knew about the replacement. I guess I can stop using the other Black Wing pencils just for the eraser.

First of all, that project would aggravate the hell out of me. It would insult me because the project does not encourage me to use the product. The person sitting in the little ivory tower in the castle may have the time to create such fluff, but obviously doesn't have to put the groceries up or start dinner. The black wing pencil - well, I would love to have a box. I find that more than anything I just love to sketch with a good graphite pencil. It is my favorite kind of art to do.

I love Blackwing pencils! My favorites are the three you mentioned are your favs. I've had a subscription for a few years, but I've become disillusioned with the offerings lately. I love their concept, but they all have either a firm or extra firm lead, and I don't like a hard lead! I'm thinking about canceling my subscription because I have so many boxes of high-dollar pencils I'm never going to use! By the way, the pencil in the tube is supposed to be a collector's item.

I am totally obcessed with Blackwings. I have the 4 basic and use them all. I even spent $18 for a single Lab II.26.21 Blackwing (blue barrel). They did a test run of the Lab when they were thinking of adding it to the basic line. Unfortunately they did not make more than the test run. It's darkness is between the Black Matte and the White Pearl. I love it but use it sparringly for obvious reasons. I have compared Blackwings to virtually every drafting and artist pencil that exists and Blackwing beats them all for me. BtW I love the eraser too!

Do you mean drawings come out looking better with Blackwing or you just like the smoothness and their versatility? I use Pentel Graphgear 500 and Faber Castell 9000 for shading big areas. Would the Blackwing beat that combo,please?

I am interested and torn to try them. I have a ton of miscellaneous pencils scattered everywhere. And, that’s not including the colored pencils. I may purchase a 3 or 4 piece set or even the set in video just to try but definitely not a subscription box. Currently I need more organization and “drawing time” practice to justify a purchase. But, this video does give me a little FOMO.

The starter trio set is great to start with, if I may be so bold as to make that recommendation! It’s just nice to be able to FEEL and see the difference between the graphites! But I get it. They aren’t cheap!!

I think Blackwing should know that watching the needless project addition could be enough to convince me not to buy a subscription. I'd much prefer product. Think how small the box actually needed to be, and why they are using some pieces of paper to justify making it look like a "big deal" before you open it. I would be immediately disappointed. (But I loved watching you, always do!) I've never tried Blackwing, but do love a good 12B, so will give it a try, thank you.

I just got my Blackwing 602, a box, the most buttery smooth pencil in existence and sharpened it with a precision sharpener, the legendary KUM and then I wrote onto the most buttery smooth paper in existence that has good performance aside from buttery smooth (even more buttery smooth are no texture onion skin and then even better is photo paper but the only excel in smoothness, not anti-ghosting or pigment retention). The Blackwing you only need almost one for all the range of shading, instead of 4 or 3 or more grades of pencils. God bless.

I just received my Blacking pencils in black matte. I know there's no 'stupid' questions so here goes: how do I stop smudging the drawing? Am I supposed to have an easel or something? Oui I love the pencils otherwise. Thanks 'best art teacher in the whole wide world'

The smudge just lets you know they are soft and buttery! You can put a piece of paper under your hand while you work and yes. Some times you have to redraw lines you’ve lost, it’s all good!

A BW subscription box? That seems like a bit of money to be spending on pencils - I mean that your supply will easily outrun your use - even if you draw a lot ... My kids are always "borrowing" my pencils too. I'd rather just buy the one that is magical by the dozen and keep the box locked in a safe - (lol, JK)!

Well in fairness they are $2/pencil in the boxes and at the rate I draw and write that’s a deal when I normally spend more! But when my kids were littler you bet I never would have signed up either!!!

hahahahha lmbo!! First of all, as I know you well, you might have been being polite.. but I know what words you were using in your head! hahahahaha Second of all. I would be so mad if I got a subscription box that had whatever that piece of equipment was. I want art supplies and nothing but art supplies in a subscription box. So yep, I would have considered that an epic fail on their part.. jmho..

Aren't they intended as writing pencils? I owuldn't expect them to be good for shading at all.

They work for EVERYTHING! They are for writers and for artists :)

I’m too dum also, and wouldn t have the latience, i would rather draw I do want to buy the black and grey like you said and so did someone in your comment
