Unboxing and Testing Edifier R1280T $100 Speakers with Built-In Amp

Ғылым және технология

What do you expect from a set of $100 speakers? Probably not much. But with the Edifier R1280T speakers, you get a sleek aesthetic and impressive sound. The fact that they're only $100 is perhaps the most shocking. Let's unbox and test to see if they really live up to the hype.

    This is hands down the best budget speaker review I’ve ever seen. No BS, just two dudes having fun while being impartial. Listening on headphones, I could hear when the speaker on the right was picked up and I don’t know if it was intentional, but hearing them talk in the background also gave me an idea of the dimensionality of these speakers. I’m looking to buy a pair for work. I’d love more info on the dummy head!

    After trying both the Edifier 1280T and the 1800TIII, I can tell you that the 1280T has the perfect sweet spot. More than enough bass without sounding muddy and much clearer generally to my ears as a classical pianist.

    The latest iteration of these speakers in 2020 is the R1280DB-S, which comes with better Bluetooth & a 3.5mm sub out port that automatically triggers a digital crossover for a separate dedicated subwoofer. Previously you had to pony up for the more expensive R1850DB for these features. Not anymore.

    I've bought three pairs of these now. The last pair for $69 on Black Friday at Amazon. In a past life (80's and 90's) I was a broadcast engineer and these hold up to JBL Studio 1 monitors every day, at about 1/5 the price. If I was still building studios I'd be happy to put these in on-air or production rooms. My dear old mother is hard of hearing so I got her a pair for her TV. She raves about them every time I visit. For computer/workdesk use these are wonderful in that they still sound very good a low volumes. There just is no better value out there right now.

    These speakers sounded better than a pair of JBLs that cost upwards of $200 and have a 5 inch speaker. What I noticed was the sound was richer and like it was coming in from multiple directions and felt natural. The JBL felt punchier and felt like they were coming in from a smaller area and thus felt flatter.

    They are actually great, far better than I expected. The bass is great, high tones good as well. They're crazy good for this price imo. Also no weird weird sounds or tones coming out of boxes when they're off. Lots of cheaper speaker sets got those issues. So it's great these didn't have such issues. I'm really happy I chose these. My plan was to send them back if I didn't like the performance but they're actually great.

    I searched everywhere here in Saigon for this model and couldn't find it. I finally wound up buying the Edifier R1700BT speakers. The cost was 2,2m VND about $95 USD ... Am using mine for editing my KZread channel vids, plus music. I think these speakers are amazing. When they arrived, I was surprised how heavy and substantial they feel, not at all like "computer speakers" ... and the rich, but nice flat sound is great for dialog and they reproduce music well too. These sounds sweet! I used a a set of proper senn headphones for this and was super impressed. The thing is I have a 40-year-old NAD Series 3020 amp I want to connect these to. But these have an amp already. Any recommendations for a set of speakers like these (same good reviews, but minus a built in amp?)

    A quick google search would show you that they can't be mounted on walls. I bought mine for 71 euros some months ago. The moment you touch them with your hand you can feel it's great quality product. Unless you are one of those people that jerk off to sound and aren't happy with anything unless they pay thousands for audio then it's not for you. But if you are just a dude that wants clean sound with great quality than these are great. I was so happy with them I even considered buying another pair but I already have a lot of speakers in the house... And if you don't require everything shaking like it's earthquake then these have more than enough bass as well. For such price these are probably best speakers around that even pop in a lot of TOP lists.

    Would you recommend these for a DJ who is getting warnings because im too loud? I mean, im not giving up mixing because my neighbours dont like techno, but dont want to lose my apartment either. What i need, is speakers that sound good and clear and wont lose too much frequencies when used in REASONABLE/LOW volume at evenings.

    I'd say if you had these plus a good pair of headphones for mixing your low end, you could do quite well. I really enjoy the responsiveness of these speakers, and as "good but affordable" options go, I think you'd be happy with them.

    Our recommendation: Set both to 11. :P Truly though, just find the sweet spot each time. The sweet spot will change based on how loud you're listening and what you're listening to. Eg., if listening at low volume, you'll probably want to increase the bass to fill it out. Louder volume means adjusting the highs and lows to again find the sweet spot for listening. The controls are easily accessible.

    They are powered so you don't need a receiver but you will need a preamp for your turntable. I have mine hooked into a U-Turn Orbit with built-in preamp and it's a very economical and space saving combination.

  • @PredictableEnigma

    @PredictableEnigma

    4 жыл бұрын

    That totally depends on if your player has a built-in preamp or not. Some do, some do not. Though most of the ones with a preamp built-in have the option for you to switch it off if you'd rather use an external preamp instead. An audio system is 4 parts: turntable, preamp, amp, and speaker. This speaker has an amplifier built in, so that's still one less thing to get, but it does not have a preamp in it.

  • @LinuxTechShow

    @LinuxTechShow

    4 жыл бұрын

    Well, no doubt your receiver has a built-in amp. So no need to get speakers with a built-in amp, having to go out through the headphone jack. If I'm correct in this assumption, I'd suggest you look at these passive speakers instead - same speakers, but powered by your receiver instead of a built-in amp: amzn.to/2QJDdJ9 And here is a second model from Edifier that we really like: amzn.to/2ZOfFHb Let us know how it goes!
