You need to wait for green light before removing the portafilter after grinding! The grinder needs to check the weight for corrections in grinding. The light-flow is: Red: portafilter is measured, weight is set to zero White: grinder is grinding Red: DO NOT TOUCH, grinder is checking if weight is correct and memorising it for future grinds Green: Rechecking is done, you can remove the portafilter. Accuracy will improve this way! To use portafilter detection, simply select "portafilter detection" and insert your first portafilter (freferably the one you want to connect to recipe 1), then you will have the possibility to store this portafilter to the system. Repeate it with your double-spout portafilter and then your recipes will be selected automaticly :-) Have fun!

I'm struggling with mine. I'm always 0.3 to 0.8 gr off. I did re-calibrate the scale but same issue. Can you help? Thanks

Great video on how not to operate the E65S GBW or any grinder in fact. So many user errors in such a short video, amazing! An excellent learning guide for beginners. Thank you!

You probably figure it out already but you need to set the porta filter detection up first before you get the accuracy you are looking for. You go to portafilter detection and insert the portafilter. The grinder will weigh the empty portafilter and then you save it in the portafilter settings.

Might want to give the manual a read, apart from making the machine look flawed also consider adjusting the grind finer whilst grinding. A common practice with all grinders really 🙄

That was a really good and interesting video. I wish I could pop in and buy a coffee :-)! I've just got a prosumer espresso machine and am in the market for a good quality grind by weight grinder. Do you have any views about whether or not the E65S GBW would make a good single dosing grinder. I'd love to hear your views. Many thanks.

@Gordon Morton I think it wouldn’t be a good single dose grinder, because of retention. And if you single dose, then you weight your coffee before, so theoretically you don’t need the gbw option. But is a nice to have for the future

Great video, thank you for sharing. I have a question concerning your new grinder. As it happens, I also got my Mahlkonig E65S GBW today! But unfortunately as it looks like it does not work correctly. It is impossible to grind so fine that the espresso does not pass through too quickly. Also the "disc distance detection" (the grey number at the top of the screen beside this orange number) gets smaller as I move the grinding dial from coarse to fine. But at around "4.5" it reaches 0.0mm and then starts again at 1.14mm at a setting of "4". I'm pretty sure that this shouldn't be the case. Does this also happens at your grinder? Or does the number declines consistent? Also what is this number at your grinder at the finest setting at "0"? My grinder shows as disc distance the value of 0.78mm for "0".

Hi Martin, I’ve not thoroughly explored the relevance of the burr distance readout. I have set the zero point in much the same way as you would with any other grinder and it’s not been an issue, neither has grinding fine enough. I would get in touch with your dealer, I’m sure they will explore the problem for you. 👍

Could anyone help me with understanding the gram purge required between adjustments?

Retention = coffee that’s stuck in the Grinder. If the retention is higher, then you need to purge for longer to exchange the coffee inside the machine. It’s like having a bottle of soapy water. If you want a bottle of clean water you need to first throw the soapy water out. Then purge with clean water and throw it out. Then you fill the bottle with clean water with no soup left inside. So if you grind course and want to change it to fine (or exchange for a different coffee). If the retention is 5 g. Then your new grind would be 20g = 15g of new fine coffee + 5g old corse coffee. The recipe you would like to achieve would change after the next shot where 100% would be the new grind.
