Unboxing a Large Postwar Lionel Collection From My Uncle! Dusty Old Trains!

Unboxing a large collection of postwar Lionel trains.
My uncle always wanted a postwar Lionel layout, but never got around to making one, instead focusing on his HO Scale layouts.
So he gifted this collection to me and the channel. I am one seriously lucky guy.
Hope you enjoy the video!

Hey Dave, nice gift. It is absolutely a wonderful thing when a friend or someone inner family gives you a bunch of boxes of trains. I had the same experience a few months ago when my son in law gifted me a nice collection of post war Lionel from his grandfathers collection. I got 3 of the Lionel engines that I most wanted: A 671 Turbine, a 2332 GG1 from 1949 and a 2342 Santa Fe War Bonnet with center and end dummies. In addition I had a bunch of 1950-1970 vintage cars & accessories including a station with train delay, the classic oil derrick and pump & both a ZW (275 Watt) & a VW (150 Watt) transformers both of them in working condition (both needing new cords & diodes). I've spent weeks slowly going over all of these pieces restoring them as I go. I've shown some of them already on Facebook. I'm sure you will have a similar fun experience with this lot. Enjoy my friend!

Great score Dave! Those flat cars are great finds. The #6800 flatcar would have come with the Beechcraft Bonanza airplane load, the #6801 flatcar would have come with a Boat, either white hull with brown deck, or blue or yellow hull with a white deck. The #6802 flatcar came the US Steel Girder, and you have that in your find. The #6810 flatcar would have come with white trailer with the name Cooper Jarrett Inc. on its sides. The #362 Barrel Loader is a fun accessory. It would have come with 6 barrels, which would work in conjunction with the #3562 Barrel Car, but dumping the barrels into an empty gondola was what done as well. I think I heard you say you had the barrels in the video, but it is missing the little gate. Those are easily replaced. The part # is 362-48. They’re plentiful on eBay. I didn’t see the little man for the barrel loader either. His part # is 362-73. They too are plentiful on eBay. Great little accessory to say the least. It would look great on your layout, and lots of fun to play with. Get in touch with me if you need any assistance with any of your accessories. I’ll be happy to help. Tom

Glad to see you finally got some 3 dome tankers to add to your tanker train. There are some good videos on KZread for restoring those 022 powered switches. They helped me bring mine back to life and fully functioning. The only problem with getting boxes of trains is justifying to the wifey about going to the Hamburg train show on September 11th. Lol.

Wow Dave, it looks like Christmas came early at the Chateau Gryffyn! Some good stuff that your uncle gave you! I won't comment on all of it except for a few items. First. check those manual switches. They MAY be the type that cuts off power when they're not open to the main line. VERY good and versatile and great for storing trains with engines on a sidetrack without them trying to "escape." Guys look for them just for that reason. I see the engine you called a 2026 actually has 2035 on the cab. That's a good one, I've got one myself. I call it "The Blockbuster" because of its chunky good looks. A good puller too! And you've got a 2065, another good one! I used a 2065 as a repaint project on account of the front end feedwater heater. I made a Jersey Central engine out of it. I wasn't planning on watching the vid this early but the wife's out and I'm keeping our Basset Hound company. A fun show as usual! Thanks!

It's been a while since it happened, but I more or less got to have this experience a couple times and it's just. the. best! One of my favorite items I got this way, which I'm slowly working towards restoring (off and on) is a 97 coal elevator, one of my favorite accessories. It's in pretty rough shape and probably will have to be repainted but I'm excited to eventually get it running again. Last Saturday I was given a small collection, in a box, which didn't have a lot of O gauge but it did include a couple neat items. There's a very rough Sakai HO set that I hope can be repaired, and I now have a third triple-dome Sunoco tanker (love those things). The most remarkable items may well be a Lionel 0706 vista dome (c. 1959-1962, supplied by Athearn) and best of all, a Lionel 0805 Radioactive Waste flatcar. the trucks and chassis were in somewhat rough shape but I was able to make it presentable and operable in the end. Definitely one of my absolute favorite postwar Lionel HO pieces I have.

I don’t think you’ll find sos boards but there are certainly options for upgrades for better sounds. As far as tape, I would used the white foam double sided tape. But many of mine I’ve just stuck a business card inside the tender under the board. Not a good fix but it does the job.
