When you consider some of the crap you have to eat while on active duty service you reset perimeters about what you will consider eating. It takes real grit to maintain food hesitations after such a life.

This was a "FRYS" ration, which means freeze dried, so it wouldn't come with a heater. You always need to heat water yourself, for a FRYS ration. A "WET" ration would include a heater. Which is why I like those better. Just easier.

@@MeAncient Freeze dried food just requires hot water. When I was in the danish army, we all were issued one solid fuel burner to heat water over or like in my case, which was before these fancy freeze dried packages, we got a large can with the meal in it, that you would heat over the burner. We even had one stupid private who thought he was very smart and just put the can over the burner instead of emptying it out in his metal cup. No need to tell what happens with a closed can over open fire. We sure got a good laugh though when his Chicken Frikassé exploded all over him and he looked like a whole party had barfed on him :D

I have had packs that was suppose to have the self heaters but none came with it, although it was listed. One thing I notice about the Danish and polish rations is that they don't add a lot of chemicals and extra sugar and they seem to start with high nutritional quality food (whole grains, no sugar added fruit paste, dark chocolate instead of milk chocolate) and the only preservation will be either the packaging (cans etc) or freeze drying. They also seem to have shorter shelf lives than American rations.

A good way to take out the bitterness of coffee is to add a little salt surprisingly enough. 1/8 of a teaspoon salt and then add your desired sugar and milk. We used to get growing coffee for the industrial coffee maker at work, it would make 1.5 gallons of coffee per package and we were told adding salt to taste would take away the bitterness. Tasted so much better. It works out to basically a large pinch of salt per 8oz cup

I've had occasion to view a number of your videos. Overall it seems MREs are light on vegetables. Is that troops won't eat their veggies or is it that the nutritional value doesn't justify the weight? I was surprised this Danish MRE didn't have a meat/protein, possibly some type of preserved fish. Your thoughts? PS: I love the way you subtly share your faith by praying before eating.

The 24hr rat pack/ORP isn't quite the same thing as MREs, they're mostly COTS items and the user is expected to have cutlery, esbit stove or whatever, and just shove whatever they need for e.g. a patrol into their webbing as needed. Ironically with the way the US military actually uses MREs in practice, everyone involved at all levels would probably be much happier with ORPs.

I was arctic infantry in the army. Our cold-weather MREs are different than the normal MREs. There’s lots of drinks lots of soups lots of pastas and carbs. What people forget is you need a lot of extra carbs to stay warm, and an arctic environment is very much like a desert environment it’s just as dry it’s just cold. So everything that you were seeing and telling sounds pretty familiar to me.

Hey guys. Interesting that there's no meat in any of the main courses. I wonder if that's because of cost or if it's some type of national preference? I was surprised that the one thing you didn't care for, the chocolate, was something I thought would have been great. I've heard that their chocolate is usually very good. Oh well. I noticed that you mentioned that the coffee, had a slight bitterness to it. My great uncle, who served in WW2, that I've mentioned in the past, said that in WW2, they would put salt in their coffee, to eliminate the bitterness. I guess he liked it, since he drank his coffee with salt, the rest of his life. Great video, looking forward to the next one, God bless.

In combat rations there is usually meat in them. However, some rations don't contain meat, so you are able to give it to the local populace. For instance Afghans who doesn't eat pork or non-Halal meat. I am more surprised there wasn't any fish in it. Usually there is always one package of some sort of tuna or mackerel.

The heat packs & creamer could have been pulled by customs, but maybe not. I know powdered creamer is highly flammable, & the heaters I remember in The Corps, in the first half of the nineties, could get quite hot, so that was the first thought that came to mind why before being shipped over the pond they may have pulled those items out.

The powder in the breakfast would be milk powder. Also i think you could prepare it with cold water, as we most often eat muesli with cold milk in DK. But hot muesli porridge is nice as well!
