Bob Reynolds is a Grammy Award-winning tenor saxophonist known for his work with Snarky Puppy, John Mayer, and 8 solo albums. He is a D'Addario Woodwinds artist.
LONGER BIO
Saxophonist Bob Reynolds is an in-demand jazz performer, educator, and sideman, as well as a regular member of the Grammy Award-winning band Snarky Puppy. Born in Morristown, New Jersey in 1977, Reynolds grew up in Jacksonville, Florida, where he first started playing saxophone at age 13. Although he listened to a range of music as a kid, by his late teens he was a dedicated jazz student. After high school he honed his skills at Boston's Berklee College of Music, where he mentored with George Garzone, Hal Crook, and others. As a leader, he debuted with 2000's The Bob Reynolds Quartet, followed by 2006's Can't Wait for Perfect. That same year, he joined fellow Berklee alum John Mayer's band and spent the next five years with the pop star, touring and appearing on such albums as 2008's Where the Light Is and 2009's Battle Studies.
In 2013, he returned to his solo work with Somewhere in Between, which reached number one on digital jazz charts. He then made his Snarky Puppy debut appearing on the genre-bending group's 2014 effort, We Like It Here. Two years later he was back with Snarky Puppy for the Grammy Award-winning Culcha Vulcha. In 2017, Reynolds delivered the EP Guitar Band, which featured appearances from Kneebody bassist Kaveh Rastegar as well as fellow Snarky Puppy members Robert "Sput" Searight (drums) and Mark Lettieri (guitar). ~ Matt Collar

    BEST. CASE. EVER. I got one on recommendation from David Sanchez. Neck pouch fits in bell, tenor mouthpiece pouch fits perfectly in cubby, and I don’t use that well space under the body of the horn. The clips have NEVER once opened for me (without me intentionally doing so) and I’ve used the case for about 7-8months now. Straps don’t wear down, they’re suuuper comfortable, and I’ve had the case on my back for hours not noticing it. I’ve never felt fear seeing the case take a slight spill. It’s amazing. The only “drawback” is that I bring a tiny messenger bag with me everywhere that contains all my extra supplies (neck strap, extra boxes of reeds, sax stand, stand light, iPad, pencils, etc etc etc.....which really turns out to not be a drawback at all!). I give this case 5*. Love it.

    ...and I totally know there will be plenty of “ummm not. best. case. ever.” replies. Yeah ok whatever lol This case has been ideal for me. Zero issues (yet). I love the fact that everything fits tightly in the case. My mouthpiece is a hard rubber Berg Larsen 115/2....the pouch will expand/stretch lightly over time and it gets easier to fit everything in there. Have no worries! It’ll all be great.

    Thanks for the cool video (and all the other ones!) - I sympathize because I was concerned about the very same things when I bought this case a few months ago. A few points: this case fits UNDER THE SEAT on almost all flights that I took so far. Maybe that's not what everyone's looking for, takes away some of your leg space, but for me, the pleasure of not having to look up in case some crazy person starts pushing and pulling bags in the overhead is simply sublime. Put it under the seat, go to sleep, done. Now, in terms of the latches, it's odd because yours are totally different from mine. It actually seems like BAM noticed the problem and designed new ones, although you seem to have the same problem so who knows. In any case, mine never ever opened but I do lock one of them just in case. Feeling you about loosing the key - I put one copy on my key chain and one in my wallet's coin pocket, and that pretty much seals the deal for me. One last thing - I took a normal sandwich bag with a zipper thing (it's probably called something else in English, right? That plastic zipper that seals the bag) and I put my strap in that. Then I put that in the bell BEFORE I put the neck pouch there. It fits and goes all the way down. That frees up a lot of space in the compartment below the horn and also prevents any metal parts from cling-clanging and scratching anything. I hope that helps... all the best.

    I bought a Bam Cabine for my alto a little while ago. What I found helped was buying a neck pouch that fit the mouth piece (I have an old BG one that has a mouth piece pouch that Velcro’s onto it. I then use the mouthpiece space to fit my neck strap. The small part under the horn is then for swans and reeds. I bought it to help me minimize the amount of stuff I take, the protec I had before fit my Hercules sax stand, multiple mouthpieces , a real book and a million empty reed guards. I kept breaking my straps due to the weight. So I moved to the Bam to force me to minimize my over packing habits. Mine has different latches to the one on video but I’ve never had issues over the last 2 years.

    Hey Bob, I’ve had the BAM Cabine case for over 2 years now. I fly with it and take it on public transit(during rush hour) all the time. I’ve never had a latch come undone by accident, and the case is bare bones when it comes to the storage, neck goes in the neck pouch and in the bell, mouthpiece cubby does work with hard rubber mouthpieces, I know it feels ridiculous but it’ll be fine, and that does go in that little side compartment. I can keep a box of reeds in that little indentation on the bottom of the case and as for the strap, just wrap it in your cleaning cloth and it’ll be fine. My strap has a pretty heavy brass hook, and all I do is keep it wrapped in my polishing cloth and it has never gotten loose and scratched up my horn. And I backpack it all the time, and you’re correct on what goes on top. A suggestion if you don’t like the current configuration, buy a KIWI saxophone neck bag, they have one that holds the neck and mouthpiece separately and goes in the bell, that’ll free up the little side slot so you can put your neck strap plus cork grease in the BAM mouthpiece cubby and keep your cleaning cloth and box of reeds in the little indent.

Mine stay on pretty nicely. I know many people who vouch for this case. I've received so many comments about how nice they are. Definitely give it a whirl. You'll hopefully end up loving it! All the best.

    This is really late, but as someone who uses the bam cabine case I feel obligated to share this. I never had any problems with the latches opening, but I was always really paranoid, so after about 2 years of having the case, I took one of the keys and put it on a key ring, and attached that to the backpack strap carabiner. I just lock it and attach the key to the case, so I never have the case without the key, and the latches are guaranteed to stay closed.

  • @Novosax

    Hi Bob, If you don’t like the Cabine, check out the BAM High Tech. It has backpack straps with good carabiners and separate hooks. It has a neck bag and a space for it so it doesn’t have to go in the bell. It also have a storage bag inside that can hold your mouthpiece, neck strap, reeds, and any other small things you want like repair tools. It’s much bigger than the storage compartment on the Cabine and the Softpack. There are also storage areas on the back and front for music, books, a small stand, etc. The clips are way sturdier and harder to open than the Cabine too. The price point is a bit higher. $695 most places. It’s bulkier than the Cabine and a Walt Johnson, but I think it still fits in an overhead bin on a plane. I’ve got one, and I am really happy with it. Cheers!

  • @AcevedoDMA
    @AcevedoDMA6 жыл бұрын

    Definitely prefer the Bam soft pack. I saw the cabine and tried it out and was not impressed. One of the biggest things for me is to have a sturdy compartment for the neck. Then the inside of the bell can hold everything else. Have had bam softpack for 10 years for tenor and two years for alto. Both still going strong. I say get another softpack. Cheers, Bob!

  • @alhomicz5644

    I picked up that same case a few months ago. I also had the softpack. For the latches on the new Cabine...I just used some paracord and tied one of the keys on the handle with just enough slack to reach the center latchlock and the top latchlock. Good Luck with it and Happy New Year Bob!

    Hey Bob-check out the Hiscox LiteFlite Pro case. It´s up there with the Walt Johnson-but available. I´m getting a back pack made for it. One strap is not enough. I toured with it and felt that it could take a heavy fall or hit and everything would be cool. Thanks for vlogging!

  • @dymsk
    @dymsk6 жыл бұрын

    Yo dude! I've got the same case. I deal with the latch/lock issue like this: Take one of the keys and tie it around the handle with some paracord/camping cord, such that it can reach the top 2 latches. Locking those will prevent the horn from ever falling out, even if the bottom one comes undone. Take the spare key and put it on your house/car keys etc. to keep as a backup in case the one tied to your case breaks off for whatever reason.

    They aren't making the walt johnson cases BUT you can the the P Mauriat versions which are identical to the old WJ design. In fact I think I heard that they bought the patent from them and it's basically a walt johnson... I have one for my alto and one for my tenor and they are rock solid, I compared it side by side to an old WJ case, and they are almost identical. They are a really great option. You can find them online...

    Actually the Mauriat case doesn't have the same storage as the Walt Johnson and it's ABS instead of fiberglass. I have both. Mike Manning can mod a Walt Johnson with some very strong and sturdy backpack straps. Got my WJ second hand with his staps and it's great. Of course if your WJ is already pretty worn, a new Manning Custom might be a good bet, no?

    I've had the softpack for 13 years (alto). The trick with the storage area is to put the horn keys down on the lid while you access the compartment. The only bad thing for me was when I once picked it up without zipping it-the case can sit flat without being zipped, and mistakes can happen. Great case though

    Bob, just so you know, BAM fixed that latch issue on the cabine case with the new “Panther” model. The outside has a different texture than the standard cabine, but otherwise they are of the same design, except for fixing the latch issue of course. I finally got mine for tenor which was on back order last month and it is an incredible case. Getting use to the compact space is new, but I otherwise love it. I just ordered one for my alto.

    are there not better choices than the BAM? Usually brands you find on Amazon aren't that good (e.g. weight lifting equipment... for the most part). What would be some "best money can buy" cases? Carbon fibre? Hard cases with good protection and compartments and latches that will not open...I think some horn maker sells their Sax's with one...Not sure if it's Pete Mariat or Keilwerth...

    The Bam Cabine doesn't fit my Reference 36 well unless I press the case down quite hard to get the lower latch (old style, not like yours) closed. My techie removed some of the padding to make room for the horn. It is also very slippery and you have to be careful where you put it down. I do love the backpack straps and it's looks, if that's important. I keep an emergency neck strap in the cubby hole in case I'm separated from my harness which I can't fit in the case. I don't travel much anymore and I miss my Reunion Blues SF gig bag. I didn't have to lay it down to get at the horn. I could remove the horn in a vertical position and it had a handle at the top so I could weave my way through a crowd. I still like the Bam for it's construction but wouldn't get it again if I had that choice. Good luck with yours.

    I'm thinking about getting one of these for my Reference 36 tenor. What I like about it is its sleek design. Tenor is a big instrument and cases can get bulky. I don't understand the hiscox case. That shape of it seems very awkward. Anyway does anyone have a news on the latest design (if any) for the latches? If there is fix - where are they being sold. I wouldn't want to buy one with the old latches. Cheers

    Looks like you've gotten plenty of "I use this case and it's the shit comments", haha! I also have this case and love it but I feel your pain with the latches. Looks like your latches are different from mine (new design?); got mine from Roberto's 2 summers ago and face the same issue. My bottom latch has come open several times. Maybe I'll try that paracord solution some of your followers listed. I love it because of how sleek it is and how often I have to fly with my horn (almost every weekend) and it fits in the overhead compartments even on super small regional jets so that's pretty dope. I'm able to fit a Rico reed case, pad paper, my Ishimori neck strap and Ted Klum mouthpiece in the bottom indention and my Guardala mouthpiece in the mouthpiece pouch/pocket. Hope you find a way to make it work for you! Come back to Nashville! I was on the road and I missed you at Rudy's! :(

    They've changed the latches of the case and they are much less sensitive now! I find it quite hard to open them with minimal effort. Also I put the sax neck under the saxophone and store my strap in the bell. That probably takes more time setting up the sax though :p

    I had and skb alto case and picked it up when I thought it was latched and ended up dumping the horn on the ground. I don't understand why all of these shell type cases (or any case for that matter) don't put handles on both the top and the bottom so if you pick it up by the handles in can't open even if the case is not latched. Cases are expensive, how much could an extra handle add to the price.

    I have a BAM soft case just like your old one. I took the compartment thingy out, because it seemed to bend my left keyguard for some reason. Too hard, and making the case too small for the actual horn.

    So you’ve got the new latches design. I’ve got one just a year ago and it still had the old latches (same design since early 2000’s at least). The latter is what most people complain about opening too easily. It sucks the new design is not better.

    I've just got a new alto Cabine after 16 years using their 2000's Selmer Flight contoured case that was a hybrid between Cabine and Softpack, with the old Cabine latches. The new BAM latches are night and day compared to the old design. You may be feeling they can open by accident, but the new design is much more robust and stay closed much better. I'm now happy that they redesigned it. I still hope at some point they implement a double action latch (like Manning uses), which are really bullet proof against accidents. Now I just need to figure how to store all my stuff in this case. Looking forward to hearing your solution. I wish they had at least a neck slot inside.

    Bob Reynolds not really an option, but if you ask nicely to your local distributor or saxophone shop, they can ask for a second strap and your local sax shop can fix it with a kit that bam give I can send you a photo by email?

    Thank you so much for this thorough evaluation, Bob. Oh, and I also appreciate all the helpful comments from others here. Just as @Koki Sakurai mentioned, I would definitely want to throw a luggage strap around this type of case, just to be sure no disasters transpired due to wonky latches. Hey -- If you ever try out a wheeled tenor case that you like, please review that here. That's what I need!

    For the stupid amount of money those BAM cases cost, you'd think they'd somehow manage for you to store your neck, mouthpiece, strap and maybe a box of reeds somewhere other than inside the bell of the horn. Latches are ridiculous too. $350ish dollars and you might have to use paracord to keep the latches shut? LOL. Hmm....I guess that puts me in the "that thing's a POS" crowd. So be it.

    Pfffffff. Bam has really shitty cases. But it's still best cases in the world. You need two mouthpieces? No, sorry, you don't. You need case with reeds? No. You need something more? No. Use other bag. This terrible gum on shoulder belt! It looks like trash in 6 months. And price? Awesome... I know 2 or 3 cases by bam, that looks normal. But I'll never by it. Cause case can't cost so much. IMHO.
