🇧🇪Today we are in Bruges, often referred to as the "Venice of the North. It is a picturesque city in Belgium that's like stepping into a fairy tale.
Bruges' historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with medieval architecture, cobblestone streets, and canals. The Markt (Market Square) is a must-visit, with its impressive Belfry tower offering panoramic views of the city.
We strolled through the cobbled streets, buying and eating famous Belgian chocolates and watch the horse and cart. The Church of our Lady houses the painted tombs and the famous 'Madonna & child' statue by Michaelangelo.
Climbing the Belfry tower is a popular activity for visitors. While the climb may be a bit challenging, the reward is worth it. At the top, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of Bruges and its surroundings, spoiler alert--I did not do this!
The Basilica is a beautiful church is famous for apparently housing a vial believed to contain a cloth with Christ's blood. Whether you are religious or not, the Basilica's stunning architecture and rich history make it worth a visit.
Time to clear up a couple of misconceptions. Did you know that the beloved "French Fries" were actually created by the Belgians, not the French? During WW1, an American soldier was offered a chip by a French-speaking Belgian. Assuming the person was French, the term "French fries" was born. 🍟Also, the locals in Bruges speak Flemish and pronounce it as "bru-ges."
