Sturgeon, were once so plentiful, that they were netted and packed into barrels, to be sold as Albany beef.

We have them in maine. I dont know much about them, but they gather in groups and we can see them jump in the river into the air. Hundreds of them seasonally.

We have 3 to 5 foot Sturgeon here in Maine in the Kennebec River. I go down to the river and watch em jump out of the water for flies and mosquitos. It's just amazing to see the smaller ones breach so high. Looks like they get up to two feet of air in each jump. The larger ones seem to hang in the more shallow areas and see what they can manage to eat.

@@CCGem It really is. And....in the summer, it never fails, you'll see em jump as long as you want to stand or sit there and watch. They're protected, thankfully; you can't try to catch em or keep em.

Sturgeon are bottom feeders you absolutely do not see them jump out of the water to see them eating flys. Not a chance they would ever be able to do that. They are filter feeders. Which is why they have whiskers on the bottom of their face, it's so they can feel the bottom and know when to start sucking up material to filter Feed it.

They may jump out of the water but it's not to eat flys or mosquitos. Their mouth doesn't even open in a way they could eat something jumping out of the water....

I'm just surprised that it just let him hold it there, floating, after he caught it, while doing his talking bit. I know it was likely exhausted from the fight, but it still has instincts. Maybe, due to its age and size, it didn't feel as though it could _be_ prey and decided it was at no risk of harm. 🤔

Sturgeon are 1. Extremely rare. 2. Filter Feeders, meaning they suck up food from the ground and 3. They would be more scared of you most likely.
