UN Chief on Israel/Palestine Crisis - Media Stakeout | United Nations
“For the sake of the people of Gaza, for the sake of the hostages and their families in Israel, and for the sake of the region and the wider world,” Secretary-General António Guterres today (30 Apr) “strongly” encouraged the government of Israel and the Hamas leadership to reach now an agreement, without which “the war, with all its consequences both in Gaza and across the region, will worsen exponentially.”
Talking to reporters outside the Security Council, Guterres warned against an Israeli military assault on Rafah.
He said, “more than 1.2 million people are now seeking shelter in Rafah governorate, most of them fleeing the Israeli bombardment that has reportedly killed over 34,000 people. They have very little to eat, hardly any access to medical care, little shelter, and nowhere safe to go.”
In northern Gaza, Guterres continued, “the most vulnerable - from sick children to people with disabilities - are already dying of hunger and disease,” and stressed that “we must do everything possible to avert an entirely preventable, human-made famine.
He said, “we have seen incremental progress recently, but much more is urgently needed -- including the promised opening of the two crossing points between Israel and northern Gaza, so that aid can be brought into Gaza from Ashdod port and Jordan.”
The Secretary-General said he was “deeply alarmed by reports that mass graves have been discovered in several locations in Gaza, including Al Shifa Medical Complex and Nasser Medical Complex.”
He said it was “imperative that independent international investigators, with forensic expertise, are allowed immediate access to the sites of these mass graves, to establish the precise circumstances under which hundreds of Palestinians lost their lives and were buried, or reburied.”
Asked about the protests against the war in several American universities, Guterres said it was “essential in all circumstances to guarantee the freedom of expression, and the freedom of peaceful demonstration.”
At the same time, he continued, “it is obvious that hate speech is unacceptable. Based on my experience in government, I believe it is up to the university authorities to have the wisdom to properly manage situations like the ones we have witnessed.”
Asked about the situation of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, the Secretary-General said, “settlements are illegal in themselves settlements are an obstacle to peace. Settlements are an obstacle to the two-state solution. And not only settlements are illegal, but the violence of settlers has been one of the most serious aggravating factors of the very dramatic situation that we have now in the West Bank. And obviously this should also be a method that would deserve full accountability.”
During the press encounter, Guterres also called on Member States to pledge funds generously to ensure the continuity of UNRWA’s operations.

You said the same thing in November but it all started again what guarantee we have this temporary ceasefire will not create the same situation like the November 1 week temporary ceasefire. I suggest using the peace hold soldiers inside the Gaza for any type of action or inquiry. That's the only way elections can take place in Gaza and the west bank independently and fairly. A path towards Palestinian state. Release of all hostages and all Palestinian detainees must be released without a question.

You say two state solutions. What I do not understand is that Netanyahu has publicly said he does not want a two state solution. So him saying that, how do you think that a two state sutuon will happen. Also, if this was the other way around and Israel lost 40,000, you would have done chapter VII. While I agree, the tone and words are way too kind considering the willful actions such as cutting water, electricity, the never ending blockade, months of hunger/thirst (!)... the West Bank looking like Swiss cheese, settler violence on the rise, and Israel ignoring all international limits and resolutions. What about the thousands that are imprisoned indefinitely without any actual judicial process! Once we stop (hopefully) the current direct ethnic cleansing of Gaza, will we go on ignoring the slower ethnic cleansing of the West Bank? The world enjoys peace and joy, resulting from the peace, because of people who are merciful. Pro-Israel are merciless against Palestinians. Pro-Palestine are merciless against Israelites. But a Pro-Human will see the humanity inside both Pro-Israel and Pro-Palestine. So in order not to accidentally punish the humanity inside Pro-Israel and Pro-Palestine. We must not judge anyone. Instead show mercy to everyone. As per wisdom from Bible Verses: ----- (Matthew 12:7 Revised Standard Version 7 And if you had known what this means, ‘I (God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob) desire mercy, and not sacrifice (Animal sacrifices),’ you would not have (accedentialy) condemned the guiltless.) ---- So if we blindly show mercy to both Israel and Palestine, without judging them, we will not accedentialy condemn or punish the the guiltless humanity inside both. --- So my following plan shows mercy to both Israelites living in the land as well as Palestinians who lost their homes in Gaza. ----- A common government, which favours both Israelites and Palestinians in the land should be established. This way people who are already in the land need not loose their homes or property. And those who lost their lands, people of Gaza must be given back their homes and properties. And to avoid war in the future. The land must not be named "Israel" nor "Palestine". This way Humanity is preserved. Or I suggest UN and ICJ or ICC make deal with Hamas. Deal is, release of all Israel hostages in exchange for military security for people of Gaza. If the majority in UN accept the deal then whichever country in UN vote positive for the deal send their military to safeguard people of Gaza. ---- And UN and ICJ or ICC take over Israel and Gaza and make it single state. And make sure both Israelites and Palestinians in the single state doesn't loose their homes, property or site etc... and help Palestinians of Gaza to rebuild their homes lost in war. And UN govern the single state until proper government is established. The government established must treat both Israelites and Palestinians of Gaza equally. And the government must reward cross country marriage between Isralite and Palestinian.
