The umpire before he bounces of throws the ball up, turns around and shows where he will be backing off to. ANY contact made with the umpire resulted in a free kick. Now it's open game? What happened?

I played 12 seasons of senior football as a rover, I don't remember ever running into an umpire.

How would you even know who to give the free kick to? The player pushing the LEAST hardest?

You aren’t supposed to be behind the ump at any point. You are taught that in Auskick

I stopped watching afl after the ‘descent’ rule was introduced. I think it has destroyed the game. I was hoping this was a video about it being removed.

Just blow the whistle and stop the game if an umpire is floored. If it is deliberate - as one of those incidents was, which showed a player shoving the umpire - send the player off the field for the rest of the game and face the Tribunal for further sanction. Send off rules have to be introduced for all serious infringements, and those must be reviewed in real times at the ground, as in other codes. Yellow and red cards must be introduced.

Its deliberate tatic, but that is allowed, its the player that makes contact thats in the wrong. They have to go around, when the deliberate tatic works

At centre bounce have a a red zone say 2 meters wide by 5 meters long directly behind the umpire,the umpire can walk backwards on the bounce,while the bounce is taken place,no player is allowed to enter or push a player into that space ,a free kick awarded if not followed.

It doesn't just happen in centre bounces. It can happen at any ball-up around the field of play. All clubs know where the umpire is going to back up to after bouncing/throwing the ball up, so just keep clear of that zone. Perhaps the rucks contesting the ball must tap the ball to their advantage - either forward to their own goal, or in the opposite direction of where the umpire is moving to. Secondary players can only enter the zone vacated by the umpire by coming in from the side, not from behind.

@@brucejensen3081 because that rule will make more players use the umpire as a blocker and will cause players to push others into the umpire. In most of the cases the player who doesn't make contact with the ump is the one at fault

The unintended consequence of a crackdown is we'll get players deliberately running or pushing their innocent opponent into a collision with the umpire, just as Kane said they do, and drawing a free kick.

If players are looking at the ball in the air and umpires are not looking where they’re backing into, stuff will happen. One of those examples she showed looked like the player shoved the imp out of the way.

The easiest suggestion in my view is to have no player at the centre bounce be allowed to be behind the umpire, and if they are a free kick is paid regardless of contact. A free kick can be paid the opposite way if a player is pushed behind an umpire

Honestly, considering how bad the umpiring has been this year, they had it coming to em’. Be more consistent with your umpiring before you start fining players for being in ‘your’ way. How about get out the way of the players ?

I always thought it used to be a free kick, what changed?

To suggest it’s a deliberate tactic is highly questionable

the frequency in which it's happening with no on field consequence suggests otherwise.

Great opportunity to get rid of the bounce and allow the umpire to exit the centre circle sooner.

The players are not even looking at the umpires, what ever happened to the umpire making sure the space behind them is clear before moving backwards?

Of all the Caroline Wilson non stories this has to be the biggest non story from her of all time.

What's new ? More Monday meetings at AFL HQ about the issue soon?

I think the issue may be the umpire deciding who should get the free - the guy who hits the ump or the guy who blocks him from getting out of the way. Just give a clear instruction to leave plenty of the space with a decent fine for players and the club for those who don’t.

Just about had a gutfull. No other. field game in the world has so much talk about umpires instead of actual football. The endless changing of rules, standing on the mark, 50 metre penalties for moving a centimetre, protected zones, and on and on. Next players will need to have cushions placed under their heads when their tackled in case the head makes contact with the ground.Finally they should have only have 3 umpires. One in centre square and 1 each in the 50 metre arcs. One last thing there needs to be reps from all states on the rules committee. Like I said as a Queenslander had an absolute gutful as.I'm sure millions of A.F.L supporters have.

I think if we need to protect the umpire. paint out a square zone. where players can't enter when the umpire goes backwards unless the ball goes into the there. then a quick throw up.

The umpire should be able to bounce the ball then get out of the way it's not the players job to avoid the umpires.

I have no idea why Caro always jumps in whenever llordo or Kane are talking from experience on the field, we get it ur a journalist but honestly that’s why I watch this so I can see what players intentions or split second thinking on the field, we can judge from a sideline but hearing from ppl who played at the highest level helps understand the thought process, just sit back and know ur place caro if it’s about umpires, scandals or management of the afl I’m happy to hear her take, but leave the big boys to the analysis of the game 😂🤦🏻‍♂️

Ban the players who are causing this. Set the standard and show it won't be tolerated. Umpiring is a bad enough job to do as it is. Getting smashed from behind is laughable. So many players are cheating and trying to take shortcuts. It's the modern game.

I never thought I’d say this in a million years… but even as an AFL nuffy I have lost a bit of passion for the game due to this years umpire incompetence I support West Coast (but I’m not just using losing as a cop out excuse lol) Even if my team wins every game for the rest of the year, the team that wins the flag this year is going to be determined by the fewer mistakes the umpire makes on the day… and that depresses the hell out of me. Regardless of the fact of whether my boys lose every other game in 2024/win every other game of 2024…. The amount of games that have been decided by umpire screw-ups this year has been astronomical… i don’t think any other year in history has been close. I’m talking about all 18 clubs here (not just my own) So as a nuffy who wants to see the best team take the flag, the free kicks (for or against) are now going to be a massive factor in the process… so part of me now thinks “what the hell is the point??”. At the moment I’m seeing the whistle blown every 10 seconds a game or the whistle is being swallowed completely… there needs to be radical reform so there is not a repeat in 2025

Kane needs to be given a 'meaningful' position say supporting AFLW development where she can't f...the rules of the game.

The game is too Congested now. That is why there are more problems now.

@@sotiriosnovatsis4529 pretty sure there's only a single umpire in the immediate vicinity during the course of a centre bounce or ball-up from a stoppage!🤷‍♀ The other umpires are on the corners of the centre square for a ball up and within 15-20m or more during a stoppage ball-up. So again, I'm not sure how reducing the numbers down from 4 to 3 will solve the problem. It's on the players to not make contact when they know where the umpire is going to backtrack to after getting out of the way of the contesting rucks.
