Umpire Angel Hernandez's worst calls in 2023

Umpire Angel Hernandez finished the regular season as the lowest rated umpire (min 10 games).
He didn't get his start until August due to a back injury, but he racked up 161 bad calls in 10 games, including the lowest rated game.
His season may be over, but may our memories live on.

The funny thing is in years past, Angel was only in like the bottom 3rd. They had worse guys. The difference is that while most bad umpiring is usually in the margins and with a generally consistent zone, while Angel just makes real dumb calls with no rhyme or reason. Furthermore, when other guys have 50/50 calls, they tend to go with whatever extends the plate appearance because they don't want to be the guy who ruins it for a team on a judgment call...Angel is the opposite, he just calls strike more often because it gets the game moving. He might not be their worst ump in terms of overall accuracy, but he makes the worst blunders.

I was on a softball team in the eighties. We were playing the first place team and needed the game. Our cleanup hitter was up and the first pitch was called a ball, as it was above the shoulders. The second was called a ball as it was well below his knees. The third he took for a called strike. The next pitch was again very high and the ump called it a ball. Three and one, right? Tony took the next pitch for a called strike and the ump yelled "Strike Three!" We told him the count was 3-1 and he showed us his pitch counter, which was 2-2 before the last pitch. The field ump said the home plate umpire indicated 2-2 before the last pitch. We argued that it wasn't what he had called on the pitches. We lost of course, and eventually the game. I was coaching third base and the time, and the other team's third baseman told me "It was 3-1", but of course he couldn't say anything to the ump. We assume that the home plate ump just made a mistake on his pitch counter, because he did call three balls.

MLB has protected bad umpires forever, but especially since the reserve clause was ended. Umps think they've lost prestige and power and they want to assert it. Look at how horrible Joe West was, for decades, and MLB just tolerated it. Allowing Hernandez to continue official malpractice just reinforces the argument for technology-driven officiating and dumping umpires for good.

I know he is a bad ump but he makes the game more fun. The last thing we need is an automatic strike zone. If Angel is the ump then batters should just swing at anything that’s close.

Actually, Angel’s first lawsuit in the 80s for unsafe work conditions stemmed from that. 2 angry drunk fans jumped him after an A ball game circa 1981 or 1983. He legit lost 35% of his vision in one eye. To settle it, MLB gave him job security for life.

I know his season started in August, but I'm still confused as to how this video is only 90 seconds long. I would think 90 seconds of his bad calls would barely cover 1 game. Teams need to start boycotting his games.

Some umpires have strikezones that are a little wide. Others have really tall ones. Angle Hernandez is the only umpire in MLB who's strikezone is shaped like a dounut.

I have a theory about Angel and his terrible calls. I think either he gets distracted and doesn't actually see where the pitch crosses the plate. OR I think he reflexively starts calling a strike before his brain even processes the call. Either way I think he's to proud or stubborn to say he made a mistake after he does it and acts like that was the right call.
