I am Italian and I discovered her while I was in uni studying Arabic. She still is a great part of my life and I learned so much through her beautiful pronunciation. I was once in a car with my friends in Cairo and the pyramids were at my left and this song started from the radio....God, she truly IS EGYPT.

She had a contralto vocal range. She could sing as low as the 2nd octave and had the ability to sing as high as the 8th octave at her vocal peak. Her vocal strength was unparalleled and apparently no mic could withstand this, forcing her to stand at least one metre away from it when she sang.

Om Kalthoum - Inta Omry (You are my Life!) Your eyes took me back to the days that used to be (have gone), They’ve taught me to regret the past and its wounds. The years I lived before my eyes have seen you were wasted, and they shouldn’t have been counted against me. You are my life, whose morning started with your light! You are my life! How much of my life’s time, before you, has gone and been spent. Habibi (my love), how much of my life’s time has gone, But the heart before you never saw a single joy, Nor has it tasted in the world other than the taste of wounds! I have only started to love my life now. I have also started to fear that life might run past me. My heart and mind met joy in the light of your eyes. Ye life of my heart, more precious than my life itself. Why Haven’t I met your love sooner? The years I lived before my eyes have seen you were wasted, and they shouldn’t have been counted against me. You are my life, whose morning started with your light! You are my life! The beautiful nights, affection and love, The heart has saved them aside for you, since a long time ago. Taste with me the love, feel its bits and pieces, From the tenderness of my heart whose yearning for your love has reached its limit. Give me your eyes, where my eyes can daydream into. Give me your hands, where mine feel at ease upon touching them. Habibi (my love), come, what has passed us is enough already! The years I lived before my eyes have seen you were wasted, and they shouldn’t have been counted against me. You are my life, whose morning started with your light! You are my life! Ye more precious than my days, ye more beautiful than my dreams! Take me to your love and keep me away from the world, Let’s go far away, just me and you, We shall wake up with love and sleep on affection. You made me come to peace with my life, And helped me forget my pain, and with you I forget all sadness. Your eyes took me back to the days that used to be (have gone), They’ve taught me to regret the past and its wounds. The years I lived before my eyes have seen you were wasted, and they shouldn’t have been counted against me. You are my life, whose morning started with your light! You are my life! - Lyrics: Ahmad Shafiq Kamil Composer: Mohammad Abdulwahhab Translation to English: MaysoonMusic

The classics tell a story in just the orchestra alone. it starts slow and hypnotic, then dies down for the singer, then busts into a great bridge, has a few solos of a qanun in between and goes out like a train. there are many layers to it. this is why when I used to train bellydancers i would make them start with the classics so that they can recognize these layers until their bodies just move on their own. even if you dont understand the language, the voice just becomes another instrument.

Glad to see you reviewing Um Kulthum. Some things to note: The music is as much a part of the show as the vocalist, that's why there usually would be a whole 30min of pure music before the vocalist even begins to put the audience into mood (what arabs call "tarab", its like a musical high). Arab audiences are so different from their Western counterparts. In Arabian concerts, the audience adds cues and signals that a good performer uses to emphasize on certain verses... The performer may repeat certain passages, emphasize certain notes and basically improvise to fit the "tarab"

Om Kalthoum is in the thread 9f the middle Eastern world and sum... She was my first experience of the Blues ...as I grew up this led to gravitating to African American Blues BB King, Freddy king, Albert King and all those greats to me they made sense after being exposed from a little age to Oum Kalthoum Arabic Blues. Thank you for your appreciation slso of an icon of the middle East

Powerful vocals, being Arabic I grew up to my parents listening to her, back then I had little appreciation for it. I was young and Arabic music made me cry constantly. Like I did the first time I heard the Beatles "Here comes the sun"! Now I don't mind crying to music at all. I do it on the regular.

When she gave concerts through the radio the streets of Cairo were empty. She reflected the egyptian soul. Mohamed Abdel Wahab was the genius composer and life long admirer of Oum Kalthoum. Enta Omri means 'you are my life". And I always cry when I hear her. Btw, "Oum" means "mother of". It is common to call mothers with this title and the name of their child following. So it's mother of Kalthoum. Greetings from a 30 year belly dancer, married with Egyptian.
