In the ancient times of 13th century the samurai made this custom of calling everything "delicious" cause they often went to battles and their chance of dying was ... let's just say pretty high since they didn't give a fk about foul play. So they savored every meal, thus the last meal.

When he said "Umai" my entire soul just was enlightened by grace and glory. Truly amazing words of wisdom and beauty!

Rengoku teaches us a very important life lesson: To live in the present. No matter what hardships he faced or how tough his enemies were, he was always content and happy with who he was in the present moment, which allowed him to be focused on the task at hand when needed, and to enjoy the little things when they come. He doesn't hold on to anger and bitterness like Shinobu, or the guilt and sadness like Giyuu. I really do love the other Hashiras, but it really does seem like Rengoku's enlightened, both in mind and spirit, which is something I dare not say for all the other Hashiras, and something I dare not say even for Yoriichi. It's no surprise that even in death, he was still expressing gratitude for everyone who had helped him, allowing him to inspire hope and a future in his juniors. That is why his smile is so powerful and reassuring, even if he might not be the strongest on paper. He symbolizes the peaceful way to live life, by being aware and accepting who he is in the present moment. It's this simple presence of mind that gave him peace with himself, peace with his family situation, and even peace with the demons that he vows to slice down. On top of this, his confidence and grounding in his morals is rock solid. When tempted by Akaza, he denied him by simply explaining his reasons for not becoming a demon, no sarsasm (I'm lookin at you Muichiro), no bullshit. Moreover, he recognized that the disagreement arose from a difference in beliefs, and didn't belittle or insult Akaza for having them, simply declaring that he's there to stop him from killing anyone. He doesn't feel the need to convince anyone of his beliefs, because he's truly confident in his own. Not once did he waver, and I truly believe it was because of his mindset, no a lifestyle, of presence. It's also because of this that his personality is one of the few, dare I say only, genuine ones in the entire show. Him accepting who he was right then and there allowed his personality to shine through the most, and so his loud, bombastic nature is no front, unlike Tengen, and so is the happiness in his smile, unlike Shinobu. He really did mean every word he said, and wasn't afraid to correct his judgement when faced with the possibility that he might be wrong, evident in him accepting Nezuko as an honored member of the Demon Slayer corp. These days, people seem to like characters that appear to have depth and conflict to their story, so when they see shining, blazing Rengoku for the first time, they can't help but be shook to the core. Some love him for his brotherly, reassuring nature, others despise him for being so shallow and simple, lacking internal conflict to relate to. But the way I see it, his simple, noble way of living life is a result of years of processing his emotions, working himself out internally, and coming to spiritual conclusions that the others have yet to realize. He mastered his mindset. His mind is clear. He knows what he has set out to do, and enjoys every moment that he lives, even on his metaphorical deathbed. Rengoku Kyojuro. The man who may not be an unstoppable force, but truly THE unshakeable way to live life, that even the demons could not rob him of his happiness in death. So the next time you hear Rengoku exclaim "UMAI!", think again. It isn't just something to be passed off as comic relief, nor is it so simple as a Samurai enjoying his meal for it may be his last, but rather, the epitome of the peaceful mindset, that never strays away from the present. I wish all of you the best in life my friends.

Rengoku is my fav character of Kny and reading all of your opinions "FACTS" abt him just burst me into tears..i agree w everything you've said, he really is a sunshine and unlike others who liked him for the action scenes only, i loved him from the very begining ,the way he was smiling and saying "umai" i actually find it very wholesome and i thought that although he knows what he's facing his mind is so peaceful that he'd enjoy his meals and on the other hand that wouldn't put his fellows on stress. And again tnx for all the facts you've said..if only there were more people like us that value this part of Rengoku's personality

I was laughing so hard but when I read somewhere the real reason why Rengoku says umai for each bite I cried.

Rengoku Is The Only Person Who Can Say "UMAI!" Without People Getting Bored Of It

Now that I have completed reading manga, I realised that rengoku was the one with the strongest personality among the hashiras who would pull other people to him. I really wanted him to be a part of the climactic battle but things are better the way they are I.e Bittersweet. Even after his death he was still guiding his juniors and even his fellow hashiras. I just wanted to see rengoku and tokito getting together.
