Ultrasonography of Normal and Paralyzed Diaphragms

Ғылым және технология

Video 1-Ultrasonography of a Normal Diaphragm: Ultrasonography of the diaphragm at its zone of apposition can be used to measure changes in the thickness of the diaphragm during inspiration. As a normal diaphragm contracts during inspiration, it thickens.

Video 2-Ultrasonography of a Paralyzed Diaphragm: During inspiration, a lack of thickening is diagnostic of diaphragmatic paralysis.

What is the clinical utility or application? Could it be used in GBS or ALS pt as a screening test? Please answer?

They're both moving. I cant see the significance of both videos if the 2nd one is meant to be paralysed. What am I not seeing? Many thanks.

+rinnin of course it´s moving. When a diaphragm is paralyzed the most common finding is paradoxic movement, there is a movement upwards in the thorax when the patient inspires. What you can see in the video file is how the diaphragm is increasing thickness in inspiration in video 1. In video 2 the diaphragm is paralized so there´s no increase in thickness

I also want to say that the thickness of the non paralyzed diaphragm was thicker.
